Mark Mothersbaugh recently had a great interview on the Broken Record podcast in which he says there’s footage of this somewhere. DEVO is so visual - we gotta see that.

Mark is unfortunately known for making shit up on the spot for interviews. It’s a shame, because Devo and his other projects are interesting enough as is.

He might actually be confusing this for the 1977 WHK Auditorium show, which has a slightly higher chance of being filmed partially, because they were more well known and the audience actually enjoyed the performance that time. That said I don't think either show were filmed

"We'd play "Jocko Homo" for 30 minutes, and we wouldn't stop until people were actually fighting with us, trying to make us stop playing the song. We'd just keep going, "Are we not men? We are Devo!" for like 25 minutes, directed at people in an aggressive enough manner that even the most peace-lovin' hippie wanted to throw fists." -Mark in a 1997 interview

Mark has commented in the past that Subhuman Woman would last for 8 minutes, and if the concert Bob Lewis uploaded is any indication, this was normal runtime for it. Jerry has said they opened with two other songs (one top 40 cover played straight and one original), which means their time was already up once Subhuman Woman was over. They became the Joker on this night.

There's a similarly good performance where they forced the band to take part in a test of a live 3D TV broadcast on Halloween night in the 80s and they spend half the concert making fun of it and the companies behind it

I think there’s a cut between Jocko and I Need a Chick, but part of me wants to believe that they just launched into it, knowing it was only a matter of time before they got kicked off.

Doesn't sound like a cut to me
@Vox_Rhododendron Жыл бұрын
That honestly makes this even better. This was already my favorite Devo performance.
@CKT1138 Жыл бұрын
There is a cut there! Allegedly (big allegedly) they extended Jocko Homo for (depending on who's telling the story) 15-30 minutes (it was probably closer to 15 than 20). And I Need A Chick is missing the beginning. There's a cut from Bamboo Bimbo into Beaulah. There's also cuts on Subhuman Woman (to shorten it), Chango and Baby Talking Bitches, (essentially cutting the songs). I would absolutely die to hear the entire tape of the show. It's out there somewhere, and hopefully Peter Conheim or someone else finds it in the mission to find and remaster the archives. Oh yeah and it sounds like they were already playing before Murray is brought on.
@LFrench Жыл бұрын
@CKT1138 Chango and Baby Talking Bitches are not cut. They played them as a teases in a medley. If you listen to rhe 77 live bootleg of them playing Chango it's the exact same section and has 0 cuts. And if you listen to the 74 live version of Subhuman Woman it has the same segment of Baby Talkin Bitches included as a tease. Having listened to this show religiously the only cuts I've been able to identify are the intro and outro to Bimbo, and in the MIDDLE of Jocko Homo. The harsh 'cuts' into the other songs are thr results of a live medley and not 90s tape cutting
@LFrench Жыл бұрын
Also, the sounds of synth from the start of the tape is actually from the 1976 Crypt Show, the Mongoloid Years CD, which this is a part of, crossfades the end of each show into the start of the next one
@nico_mutato Жыл бұрын
they kicked them off the stage?
@CKT1138 Жыл бұрын
Yeah they were meant to be openers. They extended their set massively, if I do some head math to determine the length of their actual set, it was likely over 40 minutes, when they were originally, at most, supposed to play for up to 20 minutes. I also think that they intentionally chose to play a set of their most grating material to infuriate the crowd. Other 1974/75 sets were a lot less obtuse. You can tell the guys we're trying to upset the audience here lol
