The show at the end of this CD, where they cleared out the audience, they were opening for Sun Ra and his Arkestra, so Devo and their friends were Sun Ra's only audience that night.
@stapler9423 жыл бұрын
There's conflicting accounts of whether Sun Ra actually played. XD At the very least, the band's version of events has to be taken with some grain of salt, as the promoter clearly tells them "there's another group waiting to come on!" and Devo is known for dressing up events in such a way as to feed into their mythology and image. Both Jerry and Mark do this in different ways of course.
@julicoole2 жыл бұрын
@@stapler942 Sun Ra did play, I saw an interview where either Mark or Gerald talk about watching him play after opening for him. I think they made up the part about ending the show, fun story tho
@stapler9422 жыл бұрын
@@julicoole That's what I mean by "conflicting accounts." The band seems to say he did, while someone who worked in radio back then has said he didn't. Who knows, maybe Devo did stick around longer and Sun Ra played while other people left and assumed Sun Ra didn't.

Kind of a shame the WHK show is missing so many segments. I dunno if the rest of the tape had degraded or if they cut things down for time on the CD, but they seem to have carefully edited the show together so that it flows naturally from one partial song to the next. It'd be interesting to see what the whole tape sounded like. Depending who you ask, either Devo was really thrown offstage for being too out-there for the audience (doubtful for a Sun-Ra show), or the band was kicked off for playing too long and refusing to let the main act play. ...The latter is somewhat evidenced even on this disc, the promoter or whoever argues with them at the end says, "there's another group waiting to come on!"
@johnran6015 Жыл бұрын
I've read the main act was the punk band The Dead Boys and Devo actually got in a fist fight with them and beat their ass (Dead Boys being all actual junkies I'm sure you just had to push them over).
@stapler942 Жыл бұрын
@@johnran6015 If we're talking about the WHK show, which is the last several tracks starting with the drunken Murray Saul rant, the main act was supposed to be Sun-Ra. But I think you're right that the Dead Boys were the main act for one of the other two shows. The one with "Clockout" through "Blockhead".
