I think that Devo is one of the few bands where the live version sounds either similar or better than the album version.

That's cos they're probably unabashed nutcases. This tape speed may be a wee bit faster though.

I was thinking the same thing. This even better than the record. I think the great drumming propels the live version that little bit higher.

Noodles37UK - During those years (1978-1979), they always played these songs twice as fast live. When I first saw them in July ‘79 they were just ripping right through their set, really fast and really tight. Some time in 1980 they decided to bring it back down to album tempos for some reason. I much preferred them blitzing through the songs at hyper speed.
@CKT11384 жыл бұрын
@@Brewzerr I think it's partially because they always play for around 1 hour, and by the time of the Duty Now tour in 1979, they had a MASSIVE setlist, because they kept adding more songs to their repertoire from 1977-79, without retiring many, if any staples. So they kept making the songs faster to fit into the set duration. Plus, it was probably really fun to play fast once they were well practiced.
@Brewzerr4 жыл бұрын
@@CKT1138 That could be one reason, but I also remember an interview with Bob Mothersbaugh where he was talking about how they started speeding up their tempos after they relocated from Ohio to L.A. in the late 70's. He said that they were heavily inspired by the punk scene in L.A., and the trend in that scene was to play as fast as you could. I think it just kind of rubbed off on them, plus it allowed for more songs in their set, as you pointed out.

I will agree with some people that Mongoloid meant Down Syndrome but, this song is talking about a working man. What if it was a working man with Down Syndrome. It doesn't matter that's what I think the song is about is a guy just working wearing a hat making money No one knew.

But clearly in the lyrics it's : "One chromosome too many" But yeah, Devo's innuendos were not meant to be interpreted in a single way.

@@coreycox2345 No I know lol. It was how you said my name. Either way I never really considered listening to the lyrics until a good 2 months after the comment. Even then, I understood why people were offended, but it’s less of a relevant term now so why would people get offended by a song named Mongoloid.
