Thank you so much for researching and posting. I was a 'Bideford Boy' and travelled that way many times in the 1950's and until it's demise. Fond memories of the eventual speedy descent after Swimbridge and the guard always saying he hoped the brakes would work. A man in our compartment once introduced himself to me and ended up giving me a signed copy of one of his works......C S Lewis. I was about fifteen at the time.

I lived in Braunton way back in the late 1960s early 70s residing at 10b Abbotts Hill and working at Taw Garage in Barnstaple. I knew the line well... Such a shame that it was closed as today it would be a top tourist attraction making a fortune...

I agree. This was my first video. I don't remember the line in action. I thought it would be interesting to follow the line in Google Earth. I may remake this video now that I've learn more. If the Google Earth imagery is improved then I'll certainly do this again in both directions. Thank you for watching

@@tomd544 a helicopter flight would be best of all .. then the viaduct at Castle Hill would've shown up much better ! My grandad used to travel on this line to get home from school at West Buckland .. Boarded the train at Filleigh Station and went to Taunton ..

Thanks for viewing this video. This was the first one I produced and I made a few mistakes along the way. I'll recreate it sometime in the future. Meanwhile I'll put your correction into the description so that people will not be too mislead

This line would be of such benefit to north Devon if it were still in use. Trains from upcountry could leave the main line at Taunton and make swift progress to Barnstaple and beyond. Instead we have the ND link road with its impatient drivers and frequent congestion or a slow train to Exeter that is crying out for serious investment

I think it would bring in tourism and help the local population, who may not have a car, get work in Taunton, Tiverton etc..
