Top Gear started out as a car show, it became so much more with Clarkson, Hammond and May at the helm. Irreverent, off the wall, extremely un-PC, and very polarising in the UK. I still love it.

The premise of this episode: $1000, buy a car, road trip, sell it once you’re done. An alternative to hiring a car. They ended up giving them away, because they finished in New Orleans, and it was just after Katrina. There are plenty of best of Top Gear compilations you could react to, you don’t really need much context, it’s a really funny show on its own.

You don't have to know about anything about cars to enjoy Top Gear, that's why it's such a universal show. It’s basically just 3 middle aged men behaving like they’re teenagers taking the piss out of each other, having a good laugh on a road trip somewhere. @@michaelball4683 Top Gear received an Emmy for best unscripted show - when Jeremy revealed it on the show, he then pulled out the script. Up until that point, everyone thought it was unscripted. However, the road trips they went on were definitely unscripted. Sure, they knew about the challenges beforehand as they wrote them, but from thereonin, for the most part it was unscripted. I've dealt with Americans, particularly Republicans, online for the past few years and I can honestly say that I believe it. These are some of the dumbest, most backward fucks on the planet.

@@bargun3943 I like how people who are very familiar with a certain subject assume the world is the same way. Not everyone on the planet gives a sh*t about cars. People who own cars don’t necessarily want to watch a show about them. Cars were a niche subject for television up until the mid 2000’s. Look at how many people were in the audience at the Top Gear tapings at the early seasons/series of the show. Over time it ballooned to max capacity and then the long waiting list. Top Gear made cars popular for tv.

12:35 American and British “reality” shows are very different. American reality shows “repo man” for example are mostly staged, in Britain you will be penalised by offcom (the British tv regulator) if you are found to be intentionally deceiving the audience, so British reality shows what you see on the show is pretty much what happened aside from some editing trickery.
@ramjb
@ramjb 4 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe reality shows can't be staged in the UK. But Top Gear wasn't a reality show, it always was a scripted show through and through (something they never bothered to hide), and the specials were not different. They had clearly staged sequences on them too. Which doesn't mean on occasion stuff didn't happen on it's own, and I'm sure that the reaction by that woman in that gas station wasn't staged or scripted at all. But that's a whole different thing.

@@ramjb I think it's what's called semi-scripted, whereas a film would have every last line in the script, Top Gear would get a segment and the script would just say "argue" or when reviewing a car they'd have a series of key points they had to hit but they had some creative license to how they hit them, it gave the show structure and coherence without losing all originality.

Honestly you should just watch the specials of Top Gear up to season 22. There's maybe about 8, covering the special you saw a clip from. All involving 3 2nd hand cars and driving from A-B. below are a list of the specials and a rough idea of what they're about, I promise you won't be disappointed. I'm not a petrol head and I love them because of the humour the 3 presenters bring. Polar Special | 2007: Race to the north poll in a pick up truck against Hammond who's on a sledge with huskies Botswana | 2007: Drive across the plains of Botswana in second hand 4x4s Vietnam | 2008 : going on bikes from Saigon to Ha long Bay, to try and beat the time it took for the Americans to get to Hanoi in 2 weeks or something. Bolivia | 2009 : Driving out of dense jungle to the Chilean Pacific coast in second hand 4x4s. Middle East | 2010: As 3 wisemen, drive from Iraq to Jerusalem to deliver the baby Jesus a present or 3. India | 2011: Buy 3 2nd hand cars and driving from Bombay to the Himalayas while trying to do a trade mission for Indians to buy more British and built Anglo-Indian relations along the way. Africa | 2013: Find the true source of the River Nile. Burma | 2014: Trucking from Yangon to a river in Thailand to build a bridge over the river Kwai. Patagonia | 2015: Drive from northern Argentina to Patagonia and host a football game to build bridges with the locals As for the Grand Tour specials which was the show created with the same presenters due to backlash after Patagonia. (Available on Prime Video) Feed the World | 2018: Deliver fish from the sea to a remote village in Africa where it's hard to get deliveries to. Colombia Special | 2019 : Take photos of specific animals from Amazon screensavers. China | 2019 : Mainly just a Chinese roadtrip. Salty Sea to Unsalty Sea | 2019 : Drive GT cars from the Black Sea in Georgia to the Caspian Sea at Baku in Azerbaijan. Survival of the Fattest (Mongolia) | 2019: Build a jeep and drive from the middle of nowhere to a town called Moron. Finally. Seamen | 2019: Buy 2 boats and ride them down the Mekong Delta from Cambodia to the south of Vietnam

One of their cars had a license plate which seemingly referred to the Falklands War, which is still a controversial subject in Argentina. Even if you’re not a car fan… Top Gear especially with the original presenters is always a lot of fun. And yes, it was 100% real. The same thing happened to them in Argentina When they brought up a war from the past

They got chased out of Argentina as well because they had a number plate that made reference to the Fawklands war. There was an organised attack. Definitely not staged. It was a big deal at the time, on the news. There cars were destroyed. Absolutely hilarious

Thanks for the reaction Devon :) Btw it's actually not a reality show, technically it called a factual program and Top Gear (now The Grand Tour) they don't make up bits unless it's for comedic purposes, in which case it's set up so you know it's obviously fake. It was the biggest program of it's kind in the world actually before its end. It went on for 17 years or so and there are so many programs and specials. It's not a traditional car show, they will cover just about anything but it's based around cars/machines. The show it'self goes on in their studio but this clip is from one of their specials, typically some of the funniest episodes. If you feel like doing one more I recommend clips from - "Botswana special" driving 3 budget cars through Okavango delta kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5XOmKKXZqqYq8k - Building a space shuttle from a car and sending it to space on a rocket (segment from the regular show) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnvHo5-Nh5KsfK8

I love this show! The star in the reasonably priced car segment is fun, Devon. The guest stars are interviewed and then drive a lap around the Top Gear track. They try to beat the times of the others on the leaderboard.

This is the southern hospitality I have heard so much about from southerners online. We are friendly, so I long as you are the same skin colour, political alignment and religion as us and as long as you aren't gay! It's always a small but vocal minority that causes the trouble I guess, most people would get what they were doing, some might have a rant to themself, but it's the one guy who pulls a gun you need to watch!

It isn't a reality TV show. It's 3 friends that have a car show and do challenges involving cars, such as this one where they had to buy cars on a budget and drive across America.

This obviously doesn't represent all of the South, but it also isn't staged. The guys have also been chased and have abandoned vehicles in Argentina. I know you think that the Hillary stuff was worse, but in many areas one of the go-to insults is to question someone's sexuality. I think that is why the gas Station Lady said that. You can go online and find out some of the details of some of the guys' different trips. Yes, they show mainly the more sensational stuff, but they actually do this stuff.

Top Gear was about car’s, but not hugely. It was more comedy along with cars. Probably the best series in British history, and I’d say probably my favourite series even after Inbetweeners. Edit: it wasn’t reality, it was genuine. They had no script, everything that happened, happened there and then. That’s what made it so successful.

All the scenes are real. They never faked anything on Top Gear even when it may seem like it, also it’s good to remember that this is a fair few years ago so things were even less accepted back then than they are now. Top Gear is a really good funny show, more due to things constantly going wrong and Jeremy, Richard and James having to get out of it than it is about cars and driving. Maybe check out a few of the fails complications! Not much context is needed.

I've worked media. And I have friends who worked for the BBC at the time this was recorded. He said that almost everything in these specials was unscripted. They really did all the things you see. But, as this was being shown on BBC America they couldn't just show people and that person's gas station without getting permission to show it. So... yeah...

If you think that was bad, you should see what happened when they rocked up in Argentina. They had the whole town after them, and they were genuinely in fear for their lives. They were run out of the country! Needless to say, it was the last programme of that trip. As others have said, it's entertainment based loosely around vehicles that sometimes goes spectacularly wrong. Just for the record, their budget was huge as it was the most watched TV programme on the planet, and is the most commercially successful TV series of all time.

This is tame compared to the treatment they received during the Patagonia Special. It got so bad, that Jezza was hiding under his bed the one night. The Top Gear trio and filming crew had to flee from Argentina by crossing into Chili. The 3 vehicles driven by the Orangutan, Captain Slow, and Hamster, left behind in Argentina. The Patagonia Special created a diplomatic row between Britain and Argentina, but the BBC refused to apologize.
