Top Gear started out as a car show, it became so much more with Clarkson, Hammond and May at the helm. Irreverent, off the wall, extremely un-PC, and very polarising in the UK. I still love it.

12:35 American and British “reality” shows are very different. American reality shows “repo man” for example are mostly staged, in Britain you will be penalised by offcom (the British tv regulator) if you are found to be intentionally deceiving the audience, so British reality shows what you see on the show is pretty much what happened aside from some editing trickery.
@ramjb4 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe reality shows can't be staged in the UK. But Top Gear wasn't a reality show, it always was a scripted show through and through (something they never bothered to hide), and the specials were not different. Which doesn't mean on occasion stuff didn't happen on it's own, and I'm sure that the reaction by that woman in that gas station wasn't staged or scripted at all. But that's a whole different thing.

Bolivia | 2009 : Driving out of dense jungle to the Chilean Pacific coast in second hand 4x4s. Middle East | 2010: As 3 wisemen, drive from Iraq to Jerusalem to deliver the baby Jesus a present or 3. India | 2011: Buy 3 2nd hand cars and driving from Bombay to the Himalayas while trying to do a trade mission for Indians to buy more British and built Anglo-Indian relations along the way. Africa | 2013: Find the true source of the River Nile. Burma | 2014: Trucking from Yangon to a river in Thailand to build a bridge over the river Kwai. Patagonia | 2015: Drive from northern Argentina to Patagonia and host a football game to build bridges with the locals As for the Grand Tour specials which was the show created with the same presenters due to backlash after Patagonia. (Available on Prime Video) Feed the World | 2018: Deliver fish from the sea to a remote village in Africa where it's hard to get deliveries to. Colombia Special | 2019 : Take photos of specific animals from Amazon screensavers. China | 2019 : Mainly just a Chinese roadtrip. Salty Sea to Unsalty Sea | 2019 : Drive GT cars from the Black Sea in Georgia to the Caspian Sea at Baku in Azerbaijan. Survival of the Fattest (Mongolia) | 2019: Build a jeep and drive from the middle of nowhere to a town called Moron. Finally. Thanks for the reaction Devon :) Btw it's actually not a reality show, technically it called a factual program and Top Gear (now The Grand Tour) they don't make up bits unless it's for comedic purposes, in which case it's set up so you know it's obviously fake. It was the biggest program of it's kind in the world actually before its end. It went on for 17 years or so and there are so many programs and specials. It's not a traditional car show, they will cover just about anything but it's based around cars/machines. The show it'self goes on in their studio but this clip is from one of their specials, typically some of the funniest episodes. If you feel like doing one more I recommend clips from - "Botswana special" driving 3 budget cars through Okavango delta kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5XOmKKXZqqYq8k - Building a space shuttle from a car and sending it to space on a rocket (segment from the regular show) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnvHo5-Nh5KsfK8

All the scenes are real. They never faked anything on Top Gear even when it may seem like it, also it’s good to remember that this is a fair few years ago so things were even less accepted back then than they are now. Top Gear is a really good funny show, more due to things constantly going wrong and Jeremy, Richard and James having to get out of it than it is about cars and driving. Maybe check out a few of the fails complications! Not much context is needed.

Michel Cain As a white man there's places in the south I won't go. I think it was the NASCAR sucks that got the most attention.

One of my favourite things about old Top Gear is that it was like 70% fucking around 30% cars

Yeah, Top Gear isn't a car show. It's a comedy show that uses cars as a pretext. The episode where they make police cars is one of my favourites.

Watch the one where they get chased out of Argentina. And when it comes to Top Gear, it's all real. The more they piss each off the better.

I've worked media. And I have friends who worked for the BBC at the time this was recorded. He said that almost everything in these specials was unscripted. They really did all the things you see. But, as this was being shown on BBC America they couldn't just show people and that person's gas station without getting permission to show it. So... yeah...

If you think that was bad, you should see what happened when they rocked up in Argentina. They had the whole town after them, and they were genuinely in fear for their lives. They were run out of the country! Needless to say, it was the last programme of that trip. As others have said, it's entertainment based loosely around vehicles that sometimes goes spectacularly wrong. Just for the record, their budget was huge as it was the most watched TV programme on the planet, and is the most commercially successful TV series of all time.

This was for real , it was definitely not staged . That's the one thing Top Gear did not do . Check out when they bought cars in Miami and drove them to New Orleans after hurricane Catrina and tried to give the cars away .🇬🇧

This is tame compared to the treatment they received during the Patagonia Special. It got so bad, that Jezza was hiding under his bed the one night. The Top Gear trio and filming crew had to flee from Argentina by crossing into Chili. The 3 vehicles driven by the Orangutan, Captain Slow, and Hamster, left behind in Argentina. The Patagonia Special created a diplomatic row between Britain and Argentina, but the BBC refused to apologize.

You should watch the more intense Argentina segment where they get run out of the country fleeing for their lives. That was properly scary to watch.
