In this talk, I’ll present some of my top learnings from my 24 years studying high-performing technology organizations. I’ll share what I learned from the State of DevOps Research, the importance of architecture and fast feedback loops, and why paying down technical debt is so critical in our work.
I'll also share the work that I've been doing with Dr. Steven Spear, famous for his work researching the Toyota Production System and safety cultures. Our latest book, Wiring the Winning Organization, describes the many practical tools humanity has created for dealing with uncertainty and complexity.
I love the phrase that many physicists use on the principle of parsimony: the goal is to understand as much as possible while knowing as little as possible. Our thesis is that there are three mechanisms that simultaneously liberate performance and help us deal with uncertainty and complexity: slowification (which moves dangerous work from production into planning and practice), simplfication (which makes complex problems easier to solve), and amplification (which amplifies even weak signals of failure so they can be quickly acted upon).
We believe these are simplifying constructs explain what is in common between agile, devops, the Toyota Production System, Lean, resilience engineering, safety culture, psychological safety, and so much more. They are all incomplete expressions of a far greater, but amazingly, but simpler whole.
