Oh Oscar, it hit me as I was sitting here watching Earth, Wind and Fire with my son, Jon.
We made it. Everything turned out OK for those two kids we used to be. I remembered sitting on the floor in our kitchen, about 1974, talking to you on the phone while you babysat Bobby and Rudy. You were playing Robert's albums so I could hear them and I don't think either one of us started High School yet.
We walked everywhere together. We had no family car. We kicked ass on the double paper routes we each had. We kicked ass on the bicycles we'd make and break. We kicked ass on my mom's yard, first removing all the grass and planting the ST Augustine, one sprig at a time and cultivating the yard, weeding it for months before my mom's yard looked awesome (My mom and us re-turfed for $0). How old were we when we stopped asking mom for money, 12? We had nice corduroys, the best t-shirts and we were so cash-poor and fatherless but rich in everything else. Nobody knew how tough it was, like you and I knew, because our mom was a good woman, a proud woman. Though she spoke no English, had no real job or car, it did not matter, she was going to see us through and she did bro, she did, she did, she did.
So while I went to the Fox thinking it would be cool to share this moment with JZ. Inside I shared much of it with you. God took care of these two boys called me and you. We made it bro, everything is going to be OK.
Enjoy this video. Not the best quality video or sound but my heart was here with you.
I love you.
