I've been in construction for over 20 years and use to swing 22oz estwing hammers. Now I tell the younger guys not to bother going that heavy. I switched 15oz ultra light estwing maybe 5 years and I love it. No problem generating force. If however I do run into a stubborn piece of timber or block that the 15 won't move I still have the 22oz in the van but honestly, that only happens once or twice a year. That's not enough to justify carrying and swinging that extra weight everyday. My wrists, back and knees are already fucked from 20 plus years of roofing and framing

I have a 20 ounce Estwing rip claw that I have been using for 30+ years. I recently bought an Estwing 15 ounce Ultra because I wanted a little lighter hammer. When I felt them for comparison the new one felt heavier, but didn't hit as hard as the old 20 ounce. So I weighed them on a food scale much like yours. The 20 ounce weighed 27 and change ounces, the 15 ounce Ultra weighed 30 and change ounces. There is no way to weigh a hammer head on a handle so I didn't bother with that. So, the new hammer gives me a lighter strike for more overall weight. Incidentally, they are both the same length. I like the new hammer so I am not returning it, but I didn't get what I wanted really, but it's nice nonetheless.

If you held that hammer like a man you could probably get it in with about 4 strikes

I have the milwaukee 17 ounce with the milled face. Its a very good hammer i would give it a 9 out of 10. My favorite is the vaughan california type hammer. Id consider a 14 ounce hammer. My elbows cause me pain.

Thanks for the comparison of these hammers, where do they get off saying it's a 12 Oz hammer. I have always gone with a Stanley blue strike hammer,it just feels head heavy, it has a tubular steel handle so is fairly light overall , it's good if you're carrying it all day

The 12oz is actually heavier than the 16oz and it's longer than both the 16 and 20. Totally con. I've got all 3 and the 16 and 20 are much better to use than the so called 12 oz.

You might say I've done a little framing, trim work you name it unless you're making forms for concrete sure go with the estwing 22 other than that I'm not even sure I would use it doing that anymore I like 12 oz I've hit the nail on the head a lot more with a 12 oz than I have all other hammers combined. Pound for pound it fights like a bluegill. I give it an A. Also before you go doing another video make sure you know all the features on the Hammers and what they're for because you left several out

He's putting more swings into the 12oz. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Reaching around a tripod doesn't give a very effective swing/review either.

The physics just doesn't work out, a 12 will NOT hit like a 20. However, I have been surprised what I have been able to do with the 12. I don't use my hammer a lot though. Also, you were just noticeably worse at swinging the 12oz, even missing the nail. I think it's because you moved the nailing location to the left. Not apples to apples.

The physics on this matter is that it depends. Bow hunters have had essentially the same debate going on for decades: does a heavier arrow penetrate better? To drive a nail into wood you need kinetic energy and momentum. Momentum is driven by mass but the formula of kinetic energy has velocity squared. Going into stupid extremes may help illustrate the point: you couldn’t swing a literally featherweight hammer with a big enough velocity to drive a nail in. But if the hammer weighs as much as you do and is too heavy to swing, the nail won’t progress by slowly lowering all that mass on the nail. Coming back to more realistic figures: if you have the strength to accelerate a heavier hammer into a high enough velocity, it will drive the nail deeper with a single blow. However, if you don’t have the strength or just want to spare yourself, it’s possible to put that effort into increasing the velocity of a lighter hammer to such a degree that it has more kinetic energy - though still less momentum - and gets the same job done. It also depends on the size of the nail you’re using as well as the type of wood it’s going into. So the claim has some merit in specific circumstances. It would be interesting to make an adjustable spring-loaded hammer swinging machine to see where a heavier head works better and ar which point does a lighter head start to show an advantage.

i just bought that 20 ounce today because i felt like a bitch walking with the 16 ounce, even though the 16 oz felt perfectly balanced to me and wasnt too long.... might have to go back and grab one
