I always liked Captain Matthews, its unfortunate that some important scenes were excluded from this but he did not actually know that Dexter was a killer and when he found Doakes "boat key" (which Dexter staged) he was convinced it was not him. Something not at all mentioned in the show is that him preventing Harry Morgan's autopsy from being revealed to be a suicide also allowed Debra and Dexter to receive a homicide detective's life insurance policy payout (which would have been negated by it being a suicide) so the two were able to receive that money.

My dad is a retired cop soo I could shed some light on the subject of life insurance polices and pay outs. Harry was retired, whether it was by natural causes or suicide his named beneficiary will be paid his contributions less any system benefits. Soo Matthew's didn't help do anything on the department side of things. As for your average life insurance, they all carry a claude that negates pay outs from suicide for only a specific period of time.once said period expires they 100% pay out. This time period is soo suicidal people take out a policy, make couple contributions then check out. But yeah life insurance are legally obligated to pay out death by suicide. Soo Matthews did nothing for dexter and Debra by changing cause of death.

@@MrElmo54321 Only one problem with that, there was absolutely no basis on which Lundy could have even started building a case against Dexter and in exchange he would have antagonized the entire Homicide Division of the MPF as he was widely considered nice and inofensive, Dexter had covered all his tracks and the only evidence he still had was the knives and the slides. Lundy could interrogate him all he wanted but he would have gone nowhere and he would have finally had to leave him alone.

So, after the sneak peek for OS ep.1 got released recently, there's now an inevitable plot hole there, right? Matthews had Cpt in Season 1 of "Dexter", a job now held by Aaron Spencer in OS. Matthews was also good friends with Harry and Debra had "cried in his arms the night her father died" (quote from S6, Matthews/Debra dinner). Same episode - "Debra, I've known u since the day you were born" - suggesting Harry and Matthews go way back, probably even before Harry got his heart problems. So shouldn't Matthews already be in OS, considering it takes a few years to get promoted to Captain? He was also working there longer than LaGuerta and she will show up in OS ep. 3 with no Matthews in sight. I love that this new show is coming but I wish they'd avoided such stupid plot mistakes, especially considering Clyde Phillips is back on board. I know that quote from Matthews to Debra came in S6, which is long after Clyde left, but come on, ignoring the events of Seasons 5-8 is not the way.

Matthews 100% knew about Dexter, yet his character does everything to keep that era under wraps. Together, Matthews, Morgan, and supporting Miami metro homicide cast solve gruesome murders and vile serial killers. Culminating in the suicide of Harry Morgan. Matthews’ political maneuvers.
