Understandably many groups change the key of songs to reflect an ageing voice - I don’t think I’ve heard it done it better than this. That Kevin retains his ability to entertain in the same way several tones down is testimony to his singular talent. And just look at how great this lot look. Dignified eccentricity. Lovely.

Despite what the one-hit status of Dexys in the U.S. might be, Kevin Rowland is a true musical genius. His 3rd and final album with Dexys, "Don't Stand Me Down," is a masterpiece of 80s pop and, in my opinion, one of the greatest albums of the era (it even has a 12-minute epic in "What She's Like"). A shame he's only recognized for this one song.

Kevin had some bumps in his career that he acknowledged in a recent past... I'm happy that Dexys came back, I would've hate seeing Rowland only being remembered as the "80's guy in a dress in the 90's" or the "eccentric one hit wonder". The press can be ruthless. When I saw their debut album and "Don't Stand Me Down" featured on the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" in 2007 I knew the full recognition would come sooner or later.

In each of our lives there are always moments of great joy and sadness that grab our souls, moments that remain immortal, for we carry them with us to other vistas in other worlds. This performance is right up there, for the poignancy and importance of New Year, Jool's ability to find turns like this for this night of nights...as we reflect on what hath been, and what is yet to come, the crowd's demeanour and appreciation of this classic...and perhaps the fact that it was then neither too old, yet old enough to create nostalgia...from 1982, a time when British society was still mostly working class and could relate to the song and video, a link to the past even then...the novelty of pop heroes, and guey-eyed housewives and screaming teenage girls from the 60's...red terraced housing blocks...the sense of communities and busy high streets...bound by poverty and a shared existence in which problems were sang over by the free fighting spirit of the nation's masses...and voiced by staunch unionists who fought for truth and justice...and rejoiced in pubs and clubs up and down the UK...we were all in love with Eileen and wished to our hearts out to her...then walk into the sunset and a happy ever existence...come on Eileen...come on beautiful everlasting life...for which we oft unknowingly and subtly strive...a great performance too by Dexys...he still has the voice, the ability to perform, and please the crowd...so for almost 5 minutes of bliss we can forget the rest of a dreary troubled year...and we might dare to look up to the red glow of promise in the sky...and look forward with faith in an time hereafter, full of joy dance and laughter...as at times we had during some of the post war yrs. This song perhaps epitomises that desire for eternal joy and freedom whilst containing hints of pain and nostalgia...as did Vera Lynn's the White Cliff's of Dover and Sally... generational songs that contained the heartache and love of millions...at a time when there was a community. Interestingly, it was only a few yrs later that Thatcher began to savagely and brutishly destroy this community spirit...and steal the joy, lifestyle and jobs of the working classes...so much so...this song is an anthem for what was...but perhaps what can be again...one day, when we meet again. Great performance by Dexys who never seem to age...may they live on...and all those common folk who learnt to get by with so little...yet still managed to find happiness through dance or a song from time to time...come on EILLLLEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNnnnnnnnnnnnnn
