New photographs and a movie reveal Zaha Hadid's only completed private residence - a house in the Barvikha Forest near Moscow, for a man she called the "Russian James Bond".
The late Iraqi-British architect designed Capital Hill Residence for businessman and philanthropist Vladislav Doronin, who runs property companies Capital Group and OKO Group, and is also the owner of luxury hotel and resort brand Aman.
The house's defining feature is a master suite set atop a slender concrete stalk that raises it high above the tree canopy.

To all the geniuses who left negative comments: one of the virtues of a great architect is an ability to hear the client, see the depths of the client's persona, and at the same time being able to solve his design problems in the most sophisticated way. This is what the client wanted - a castle in the sky. The house is in the forest, but Doronin wished to see the clouds. She gave it to him in the most amazing manner. So, instead of showing your mediocrity, study and analyze the great artists and engineers. You are not criticizing a new Off-White hoodie - this is f**ing ZAHA HADID architecture.

Doronin probably does not care about the environmental impact and about ordinary peoples life. He just wants a fancy design. Hadid focussed on clients where the budget and the efficiency did not matter. There is a social housing by Hadid in Vienna /Austria, which is a walking sculpture like all of Hadids work. Nobody wants to live and pay rent there, because the apartments are inefficient. I am fine with the idea of having the home above the trees, but the form and constellation of the pillars does not make sense in way of an efficient structure. And look how much space is wasted around the building, which had to be robbed from the nature. When it comes to a building in the mid of a forest I would more opt for an efficient lightweight structure made of natural sustainable material, not cladding of hyper expensive double curved aluminium panels. It is always preferable to choose a form that easily goes with the features of a material, not one that makes it difficult. For a building type like this I better get inspired by Calatrava, Buckminster Fuller, Frei Otto, or Shigeru Ban instead of the formalist Hadid. She is a great sculpturer, but it is permitted to criticize her
@amirjavad_ca
@amirjavad_ca 4 жыл бұрын
Thomas Herzig it is permitted to criticize anyone if you know what you are talking about. In your case you are rooting for sustainability and functionality which is a firm philosophical standpoint in design. From technical point of view I will have to agree with you. Although, artistically I would say that the world of architecture would be a worse place without Zaha.

About Zaha. She was indeed an engineer, and more specifically an architectural engineer. Hence her millions and The Pritzker Architecture Prize is probably the most prestigious prize awarded in the field of architecture. Math is something she played with since she was a little girl - drawing and sketching was part of her early life. Her parent's kept her pretty busy hence the successful career. The woman had a mathematical mindset. So with her $89Million worth which actually ran over $100Million after her passing speaks volumes of this amazing woman. May she rip and her legacy and foundation continues to help Arab women looking to build themselves in this field.

I always found that the definition of amazing architecture is one that is so clever that can be created within a reasonable budget but evokes positive emotions from its occupant. A building can be a box but when it brings in natural light at the right moment, when it captures the right views and when it adapts to its surroundings, that's great architecture. This has to be one of my least favourite buildings of Zaha Hadid. I don't dislike her style but I always feel some of her buildings are overdone and over dressed costing millions of dollars.
@TheFreshSpam
@TheFreshSpam 5 жыл бұрын
Why does everything have to be done on a reasonable budget to make it look good or be beautiful? Why do people have issues with some people letting designers and architects go wild with their imagination and build what they like with no limits? Are you saying that good creativity has to have boundaries and limits? Does having the opinion that expensive design is bad make it bad? What if the same look was achieved really cheap? Does it make it good again? To me that opinion and view you have is really wobbly and unfounded. Anything can be expensive no matter what it looks like or is made of, value does not change design no matter how much it cost to make.
@AA-nf2pl
@AA-nf2pl 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheFreshSpam before you question my views and opinions I think you should look at yours first and dwell deeper into what I said. My point is that architecture must have a purpose, it must belong and it must be practical. Architecture should not merely be ornamental nor should it be so disclosed from its context as this example from Zaha Hadid. I'm not saying that Zaha Hadid is not a great architect because she is one of my favourite architects and nor am I saying that expensive is often bad. However, I'm of the belief that architecture does not need to cost millions of dollars to be great and this example from Zaha is so disjointed from its context and does not convey a great sense of belongingness to its surroundings. A better design would have taken advantage of the surroundings and not be so enclosed and imposing.

All of the technology, fantastic parametric tools used to develop this sequence of spaces and the only thing 5min of edited video has to show for is that this is a clever sculpture. Corbusier didn't speak of the cinematic progression/sequence of spaces in order to just sound and pose avant garde. So please explain beyond cliche "architect vision," more than just a pretty facade.

Superb building, I can see Frank Lloyd Right and Le Corbusier in it. Magical architect, tragic loss, ideal megalomaniacal client, perfect in his forest eyrie.....

A couple of sycophants blinded by their devotion, unable to see the reality of the building...which is that it’s hideous and doesn’t belong in that forest. As for the interior being livable, how would we know? You didn’t show us a single room.
