In a time when the number of AAA titles is becoming ever more limited and innovation in the game experiences almost non-existent we really do not need remakes of games that were already perfectly playable on your format of choice. The Last of Us Part 1 is everything wrong with Sony right now with tone-deaf decisions and a seeming lack of communication with their fans plus a lack of support in them with stuff like this and their price increase of the PS5 outside the US where it seems to be the only market they care about going forward.

I think I have a pretty hardline opinion that from the PS3/360 era onward, we basically don't need visual remakes, just remasters. That's something I've loved about the Xbox BC program, where we've gotten a number of games effectively remastered for free with resolution and/or fps boosts. Many of those 360 and even OG Xbox games still look good. If you're talking about a bigger overhaul where the gameplay changes then I'm more open to it. I think REmake is a good example: not only did it improve the graphics a ton, it used a lot of learnings and refinement of survival horror gameplay that came between. I'm blanking on if there have been any things like that recently but I could consider it being worthwhile
@weaverquest2 жыл бұрын
That shouldn't be a hardline rule though. Video game visuals have made a huge leap since the limitations of 256 MB VRAM on PS3. That's why for example it was pretty disappointing to get a remaster of Mafia II looking inferior to Mafia I remake. Another ironic example is how Demon's Souls look two generations ahead of Dark Souls 1 Remaster today in terms of graphics even though DS1 came out later. As a Fromsoft fan who played all the games I didn't even bother to get the remaster since it was practically identical to the older PC version with mods. It is of course ideal to get them through backwards compatibility with no additional cost but new releases of PS360 era games as remasters will inevitably feel really dated especially for new generation of gamers. Like it is really nice to have Red Dead Redemption on backcompat but it honestly would be incredible to have RDR 1 rebuilt on RDR 2's engine (not just for graphics but gameplay reasons too. RDR 2 have much superior animations, AI, horse riding, ragdoll physics etc.).

In terms of pricing. I think from the consumer's viewpoint this is perhaps a lot because as much as there is improvement visually, this is still a one to one remake and the actors presumably didnt have to perform again, no motion capture has been redone, perhaps adjustment from the artists, the layout of the maps and the story are already here, and have been for a long time. But you could also argue that of course Part 1 will not sell as well as Part 2 because that's not an entirely new game, so as they expect less sales they didn't want to sacrifice the pricing. To me that's still a lot to ask. Fortunately game prices decrease rapidly that's just about waiting a bit
@DaRkLoRd-rc5yu2 жыл бұрын
The other thing that stands out with this remake is the rebranding. The part 1 in its title is pretty significant. As previously people thought of the game as being a pretty standalone self contained story. But adding the part1 basically incorporates it's sequel alot more and gives its sequel more credit. And from a marketing perspective it encourages people to buy both games. And I also think they are doing the ground work for setting up a last of us part 3. Feels like naughty dog are trying to sell it in a similar manner to ff7 remake where its 3 games that come together to make 1 big game.

It's not like say the RE1 remake where it was made in less time since the release of the original RE1 but the jump in visuals between generations was night and day.

Not just that, but the modeling software used was also a major factor. Photoshop and other desktop publishing software was barely in it's infancy in terms of knowledge of use of the general public. 4K 60 fps doesn't nean anything when the assets, models, and textures of the original games were made for the 256 MB RAM of the PS3 though. The jump in visuals is very significant between the PS4 port and the PS5 remake especially when seen in person and not through youtube compression. Besides, the detail in the environments and models are just one thing, the biggest leap games have made since the PS3 era are arguably facial animations which is very important in a story driven game where characters convey a lot of emotion through subtle expressions and that part is night and day difference.

I think the answer to the question "When is a remake necessary?" will always be some form of accessibility. To use another game I don't think is worth the full price it released at The Link's Awakening Remake. Link's Awakening DX was and still is, not on Switch. On top of that, at its core, it's a Game Boy game, built and developed around that system's limits. While the remake content wise is built to be similar, the mechanical and presentation differences are big enough to make it a different experience. I.E. 2D -> 3D bringing with it its own suite of changes, as well as now four+ extra buttons meaning items and actions can just be assigned their own button rather than having to equip and unequip them to use it. LA's only drawback is that it is at its core, still a GB game, making the $60 price tag hard to swallow. Meanwhile, The Last of Us has a readily available and more than playable PS4 version that also is still more than playable on PS5. Part 1 looks and plays better for sure, especially with all the new accessibility options, but it is fully priced and will also lack multiplayer, *on top of* the PS4 version being free to some PS5 users makes the $70 entry fee even more difficult to swallow compared to Link's Awakening. Overall, I feel the price is what's the biggest killer in this conversation even if technically speaking a remake might have been appropriate , if a little unnecessary.

they were always going to remaster the game for the PS5, not even a question, at least they put in a decent effort, it's pretty much TLOU2s code base at it core.. what they did is miles beyond a remaster, which they could have done and sold that for 70! the redressed the entire game, and the DLC, level by level, they didn't just crank the frame rate and resolution.. and with motion matching and the newest AI, I mean come on.. I played Factions for years after launch, it's one of my favorite MPs to this day, but only 1/10 even tried it.. with Factions2 coming out, I get why they're not going to split the playerbase between a new factions1 servers and factions2 when it comes out.. anyways, do you wish this was the way you got to experience this game for the first time? at the end of the day, that's who the remake is for truly for.. all these people complaining, not saying that's what you're doing, but others surely are.. how long time fans haggle about price seems super entitled and immature, like just because they bought the game twice already, they deserve a discount.. that's not how value works.. the question of necessity? it's not. it's video games. it's a first world luxury entertainment industry, need is _never_ the question.. you know, if one can't afford a AAA remake of their favorite game on launch day, that's life.. and them whining about it on the internet, calling ND liars and cash grabbers etc.. go kick rocks, you're only mad because you cant afford it! they remade the game because the TV show is coming out, and because it's a new gen.. and you bet they're gonna do this again on the PS6.. 🤷♂️ it'll probably be half off by the end of the year, Christmas 50percent off sale.. enough crying, it's a bad look ✌️

A perfectly performed carotid choke like in the game can knock someone out in 5-10 seconds. Years ago in Judo my instructor demonstrated on me and after 2-3 seconds I was seeing stars, by 5 I could feel myself blacking out. If a blood choke can put an MMA fighter in the hospital in 15 seconds than it can easily take out those goons. Edit : look up carotid choke / blood choke death. Sounds like a waste of game programming... running a skin layer over an old 3d engine "just because" instead of using their new custom coded 3d engine except for the FEAR of "vocal fans" who most likely have zero intentions to actually buy the game or even a PS5 but spend a ton of time on the internet spreading misinformation and hate filled posts that make them sound like as if they were fans. That's a Microsoft thing they did and was a bad idea... this coming from me who purchased the Xbox and Halo CE in 2002 and Halo 2 in 2004. The problem with the PS5 The Last of Us Remake is the FEAR of change and fear of perceived vocal fans whining about it... There's just too many improvements to gameplay mechanics in TLOU2 but let's say ok... don't include that... what happened to expanding the game by ADDING story missions between the missions we are too familiar with... What happened to ADDING more enemy A.I.s instead of keeping the SAME things that were software and somewhat hardware limitations from the end of the PS3 generation? Adding more enemies in the maps would not have broken the game... that's why easy mode exists. It seems the game developers are pressured by fear... they told a story that was somewhat rushed in the PS3 game back in 2013... why not tell more story inside the original game? Also western gamer journalists are too damned critical of a game "changing" yet Sega Enterprises Japan did an excellent job at remaking. Fully remaking a first party PS4 level Remake of the Yakuza 1 and Yakuza 2 games for the PS4 with expanded graphics and gameplay mechanics... However the coverage that single player story game gets is nowhere near the online first person shooter games rinse repeat coverage so much that most gamers don't even know the Yakuza games exist like they didn't know Capcom's Dragon's Dogma existed back in 2012 to 2013

The issue for me is purely the pricing structure around the Last of Us Part 1 (and/or ANY other remake/remaster). I don't see how they can charge the same price as a brand new game when the 'bulk' of the Work was done 9yrs ago. The story writing, Scripts and Voice work, storyboarding, concept work, travelling to areas to take photographs to 'build' the environments, all the planning and design of the game etc etc. Its a 'graphical' upgrade with modern tweaks 'brought across' from 'newer' games to make it 'easier' to remake. There is no new Game Director and all their work is being used. I don't have an issue with remakes/remasters in general - in some cases, its more for 'new' gamers that missed out on previous games so having a new version with new visuals and more refined controls at a 'low' cost is perfectly fine - fans too may feel the 'upgrades' are worth the 'low' fee, but expecting Fans to pay nearly double the price for exactly the same story, exactly the same dialogue, exactly the same 'plot' beats, exactly the same 'predictable' outcome (it was Obvious Joel wouldn't let Ellie be killed) and all the people you 'meet' on your journey all still end up dying as they always have done - nothing 'new' to add and in fact get less content too as the MP is gone. Its like owning a DVD & Bluray version of a Movie with lots of 'Extras' included, now being sold for twice as much on 4k Bluray with NO extras - the film is still the same, same dialogue, same plot, same conclusion etc just with a bit more detail and refined image - especially over the DVD version.... ND are basically 'remastering' the MP to sell it as a separate Live service experience instead of including it with Part 1. I'd not pay £70 for a remake with ALL the content included, I won't pay £70 for a brand new game so no way would I pay that for an OLD game that was extremely linear, predictable and the 'same' core experience throughout. At least with Mass Effect, your decisions and choices can change the plot beats, the interactions, the game-play etc due to the nature of RPGs, classes etc. You can have a different experience depending on your own choices - paragon or renegade, Biotic or soldier. Joel and Ellie's story is extremely linear and the game-play is too so apart from looking and playing more refined, its the same game and core experience!!
@shootermcgavin12082 жыл бұрын
Pricing isn’t based on budget or amount of time/resources spent. It’s based on what the publisher believes people are willing to pay. I’m sure Sony has done their research on this and are comfortable with the $70 price tag. Plenty of people willing to pay the cost of admission to play a game of this caliber. Especially when you consider the timing of the release when most games people have been looking forward to haven’t been released yet or have been pushed back until ‘23.

Personally for me. A game is worthy of a remake whenever there is a sizeable change in quality in the industry. Resident Evil 1 was remade for the Gamecube and within 6 years. A lot of people want the best versions of their favorite games. I will say if you are remaking a game i prefer the RE route where they make the game to fit the current generation based off of improvements to the franchaise over time. If I ever get a remake for Sonic Adventure. I want more upgrades for characters and like frontiers is doing adding more adjustable settings per character. Edit: I think TLOU pt.1 is more for pc gamers that never played the game. unfortunately its NOT on pc yet.... Also We need Jak and Daxter remakes...

I think the biggest issue with this game is they insist on calling it a remake while changing almost nothing but the graphics. Much more expressive facial animations, lush and very rich new environments, much smoother gameplay and advanced AI of Part 2, the vast amount of gameplay modifiers and accessibility features and more. There are lots of aspects of this remake that turned Part 1 & 2 into a very cohesive continuous experience. @@nandoman4769 Just because they didn't add dodge or prone doesn't mean the gameplay wasn't changed I think 10x better graphics, AI tweaks, smoother movement & gunplay, & new redone animations is substantial changes I feel like people expected this to be like an FF7R type project when it's more like the Demon's Souls remake by Bluepoint. That changed nothing apart from visuals & a single noticeable gameplay tweak it's still considered a remake & a good one Shadow of the Colossus by Bluepoint changed even less than DeS remake it is actually just a visual upgrade. What is a "proper" remake is subjective for me with TLoU Part 1 this is what I want remakes to be like as opposed to something like FF7R which is an undoudebtly good game but changes so much about the original FF7 in content & story because this is a remake why not expand the scope to more than the original game?" The point is to preserve the legacy of the original, make an old game feel new with new tech but I think making the old game completely new isn't the best thing to do in terms of honoring the original experience with a remake I think the definition of remake has shifted to mean a more drastically changed game and that's not what I want from a remake. The whole distinction between remaster/remake is so blurred Crash & Spyro collection are marketed as remasters but everyone considers them remakes & by the current definition most people go by they definitely are more like remakes. I think what is often call remake or remaster now is more akin to a "redux" version of a game like pretty much all Resident Evil remakes are like this they don't just remake the game beat for beat with modern technology the entire scope & goals of it are changed to be so different, things are cut or changed while new stuff is added that dilutes what the original was people playing the remake to get the experience of what they missed playing the original games are not going to get that very much at all. I guess I look at remakes/remaster as strictly for preservation purposes while it's becoming less about that & more about being a showcase of how far gaming has come not celebrating it's history & how influential these products were in their time for what they specifically did, it's about realizing an idealized vision of what the games could have been if we had this tech back then. I do understand why that is appealing. In the case of this remake it's not as bad because TLoU has been preserved in it's original state and will be for the foreseeable future but with Resident Evil remakes I have a love/hate relationship with them cause they are quality games, I have so many hours in RE2R but it's not actually a faithful remake of RE2 and it takes the namesake of the OG game while being way more readily accessible to people. I get why Capcom wants to do this cause the remakes are part of a reboot timeline but the erasure of the series legacy like that just sits wrong with me eventually people might forget what the original games were & how the series actually evolved. definitely more people will have apathy towards the original games because they just are harder to actually experience now for people without prior investment it will be like jumping through hoops so why bother?

I’ve bought some of my favourite films multiple times since VHS, John Carpenter’s The Thing for example, I’ve owned 4 versions of that movie with the most recent 4k release which was £40. With the remake of The Last Of Us, they’ve recreated the environments so they’re more visually consistent with part 2. After playing part 1 again it definitely feels up to the quality standard of part 2 if not better in some areas. Due to the visual improvements part 2 made, in the decay of the environments in particular, it did make the older versions of The Last Of Us look more dated. So is The Last Of Us on ps5 worth it? It depends how much you love it i think, I’ve bought it because it’s a top ten favourite game of mine and i want to see the best version of it. If you’ve never played it it’s pretty much essential. The Remake improves on these tremendously with the lighting being the star of the show. It ads a lot to the overall experience. I found the companion AI on the Remaster to be immersion breaking because they kept running in front of enemies during stealth parts breaking the immersion. They seem to have tweaked the companion AI where they don't behave like this but are more cautious in the routes they take.

I keep on hearing people say that if the entry point is too high for some. Then they should wait for a price drop, which should be in the next few months or so. But why do people feel like that's gonna be the case for this particular game. When looking at Sony's track record, their games don't rarely if ever drop in price soon after. Take Demon's Souls for instance, that game has been out for nearly two years. You can even play it through their subscription service. A pre-owned copy is roughly $40, but if you want to buy it brand new, it's still $70. That goes for almost all of their PS5 titles, which The Last of Us Part 1 is. So they're not expecting to get the same kind of sales numbers as the sequel or the original versions. So why would they sell it for less, when this game might only sell 1-2 million copies...if that.

It’s not just that there already was a really great PS4 remaster with 60 fps output. It’s that Boost Mode then arrived with the PS4 Pro, which ironed out the performance. *And then* it got a PS4 Pro patch that brought the game up to 1800p60. *And then* you can run it on PS5 to iron out every last possible stutter. So this remake is effectively like the fifth experience update to the game at this point…

I truly believe that developing this remake so soon has ultimately lessened what the original Last of Us meant for gaming. We speak of "aging well" or "aging badly" very often when speaking of gaming, much moreso than with other forms of art like literature, painting or film. The only part of a film that might have aged the way we assume video games to age are special effects - though we've started circling back to calling practical effects timeless, along with groundbreaking visual effects such as the first Matrix film, while criticising the overuse of CGI. However, when we speak of books or art aging badly, it's usually about the cultural references made therein (many of the cultural touchstones a character might use to define themselves in a 50s novel will not resonate with many readers, needing footnotes) or their views on historical events we now see differently (novels calling America a force for pure good in the world or something). Games like The Last of Us - in terms of their design, their visuals - seem to age incredibly quickly because, like the Last of Us, they are touted as graphical showcases that only ever hold up for a year or two until the next Battlefield, Uncharted or its own sequel blow it out of the water. But this only covers a single aspect of games. Has the soundtrack (of the original) aged? Will the story fail to elicit the emotions it once did because other games now have better lighting and skin/hair simulation? Will the slowly developing bond between Ellie and Joel be, seemingly, more intense if the gun has water dripping down from it realistically? I don't think so. This, to me, sounds almost like saying all black and white movies would be better in colour, or that any poem written in an older form of speech is ultimately inferior to modern poems, since the language has developed. I understand that video games are different - technical limitations made sure Morrowind back in the early 2000s could never look like The Witcher 3 in 2015 - but many of those games were made with the best tools available at the time and absolute masters of using them. Creating a remake - making two versions of what once was the definitive way to experience the game, in its original form or the remaster - pulls a game that was ultimately about a person finding something to fight for again into a discussion that, in film, would be focused squarely on CGI, not script, sound, acting etc. I think the original and its unchanged, merely slightly graphically enhanced (featuring the same models/environments made in 2013) remaster will remain the definitive way to play the game, just as a shot-for-shot remake of a film can't replicate the magic happening between the lines of the script or the passion of the first group of people who made the first film when it was made, and how it was made. I believe the Naughty Dog of 2022 is different from the Naughty Dog of 2013, and while I think they made a great Last of Us Part II, the 2013 ND will always have made the original, true the Last of Us, that truly didn't need this kind of treatment. It needed (and needs), instead, to be appreciated as the singular way to play the original story, and to appreciate what it meant for gaming.

@@anon-qy5if I just feel like this really isn't a case of the developers being so hindered by the architecture they made the game on, remake especially, that they only now could realise their original vision. Or heck, something like Shadow of the Colossus. Last of Us was seen as a 9-10/10 game in the form it was played in since 2013/14 all this time.
@ricniclas2 жыл бұрын
My problem with this remake is that it shows how the industry is afraid of creating new games, and needs to be lifted by nostalgia and guaranteed revenue. Also, it hurts games preservation. TLOU is one of the prettiest games ever released, even playing it directly on PS3, I can understand upgrading the resolution/frame rate, but do we really need to rebuild a game so well made because the current standards are so high, and we can't look at a game that doesn't have most modern technologies, even though it clearly looks fine as it already was?

I bought this yesterday because after playing TLoU Part 2, I really wanted to finally play the original game. I found the original on PS3 and the PS4 remaster to be very cumbersome to play. After having played the first three Uncharted games, TLoU felt like a fairly large step back in terms of animation work, gameplay, and overall polish. While I understand they are completely different games, it just didn’t grab me the first two times around. So far, Part 1 is actually feeling like the game everyone else said was so amazing for the last nine years. Value wise, I do think the $70 price tag is steep for a second re-release of fundamentally the same game. I think $40-$50 would have eliminated almost all of the criticism from the vocal part of the community. That said, I’m not disappointed with my purchase.
