My approach to gaming on PC is to be about 2 years behind on the most current games I’m playing. They are cheap, there’s a chance you have beefier hardware to max them out and you don’t end up playing a broken mess.

Honestly that's the best way to go. Prime examples are Horizon: Forbidden West and RDR2. You can get both for under $20 each on sale and can max the settings at decent frame rates. Also, both launched with issues on PC that have long been fixed now too.

This will lead to less game sold in the long run for both the first game and the second one when it will be ported right after season 2 of the TV show? NON SENSE!" Sigh. So many industries suffer from a few dumbasses who don't have a clue, and thousands of employees below them suffer every time. It's quite incredible to fail upward this much. I genuinely believe the extremely long shader pre-compilation was left in intentionally to reduce Steam refunds. It was fixed by the community within two hours of release. Iron Galaxy used a bugged version of Oodle with a known memory leak. Simply replacing the file from any other game with working version of Oodle fixed the issue. Thankfully Steam is genuinely pretty lenient with game refunds, especially when the game has serious issues.

I think it's typical bureaucratic nonsense. Someone high up has a targeted date that either earns them a bonus or makes them look good and they decide to release it by that date no matter what. They know that It's a big game that people are going to buy regardless and they can fix the issues over the next few months and people will mostly forget about the launch issues. There's a whole bunch of perverse and send us coming together to create this kind of scenario and it seems to only be getting more common lately than less common. I've made it a point to basically buy no games at lunch, I always wish list them and wait for a sale or wait until all the issues are fixed before buying. Need to stop rewarding these developers by pre-ordering and buying things sight unseen

I believe the choppy animation with mouse movement was not a problem of poor sampling of mouse events, it was the camera's update not synchronized to the engine's framerate. I observed that problem very acutely, I have a mouse configured for 3200dpi and a 7900 XTX that could render the game around 100fps and the result was terrible at launch. So I used the game's Framerate Cap to 60Hz, that solved the problem perfectly: moving the mouse resulted in 100% smooth camera movement. This problem was fixed in some of these two patches as I can't observe it anymore, I now get smooth camera movement even if jerking the mouse very fast, without the 60fps cap.

I think Alex's explanation of why the TLOU port is so bad makes the most sense to me. If it was exclusively ported by Naughty Dog themselves, then I think they might not have as much of a grasp on the requirements and needs of PC, given that they've been working with Sony hardware exclusively for nearly 30 years. It doesn't make releasing it in that state right, but it does offer the most believable explanation, to me.

The PS5 isn't really that different from an AMD PC with an RDNA2 GPU. "Sony hardware" isn't distinct enough from the PC platform for that to be an excuse, the same would be true with an Xbox game. In fact the VRAM issues are ESPECIALLY egregious in this context: the consoles only have 16gb of memory TOTAL, no dedicated VRAM, and yet GPUs with 10gb of dedicated vram have issues on PC! If anything, being used to memory constraints on consoles should make PC ports FASTER and MORE EFFICIENT, not less!

Yep, HU also tried to tout the same thing with Hogwarts Legacy and Forspoken, which likewise wasn't the real issue at hand. Most games just being rushed out the door that are in a unfinished broken state and have had very little done in the way of optimization, is the current major problem and not the amount of VRAM that GPU's have. A game that's been thoroughly tested, fixed and optimised before it's release, simply wouldn't run into any of the current issues that we are seeing on PC. The real issue isn't with the amount of VRAM a GPU has or with the amount of system RAM you have or even with your CPU/GPU perfomance, it's instead purely down to the greedy, lazy and incompetent Dev's who simply couldn't give a toss about the terrible state that a game is in at launch, as long as it still manages to rake in all that lovely cash, from the early adopters. A game on PC that has been properly developed, optimized, tested and polished before launch (Doom Eternal instantly springs to mind), will always run perfectly fine on any modern PC setup, no matter what it's specs. It just needs Dev's to put in that time, care and attention into the game and to tailor it before release, so it does run well, on a whole host of different PC hardware setups. 6,8,10,12 or whatever GB's of VRAM shouldn't even be coming into the equation, because if it was developed and optimised correctly from the offset, then it should work perfectly fine on any amount of VRAM, that you can currently find on any fairly modern video card.

Thanks for reading out my question. Definitely more of a theory question. Microstutter was my biggest complaint with SLI before since each card is working on its own frame. If each could shoot rays independently to build a cheaper image and then they're combined with a simple average pass that seems like it could be a workaround for good scaling. Obviously most likely to only make sense on 2060/3060 class cards. But certainly the current crop of midrange cards being somehow a worse deal than a 4090 definitely squashes that idea. First time I've heard of the Quake RTX offering some sort of mGPU.

For ref, here's the RTSS benchmark of the first act in the game running at 3440x1440 Ultra settings with DLSS Quality mode on an RTX 3080 Ti (90% PL), 64GB DDR4-3600, 12700KF: Average framerate : 109.4 FPS Minimum framerate : 82.1 FPS Maximum framerate : 143.7 FPS 1% low framerate : 71.7 FPS 0.1% low framerate : 52.2 FPS The frametime line throughout was virtually flat with no spikes. This is of course a lengthy run and contains explosions, dense foliage from the Ultra settings, volumetrics from the spore room, so a good range of graphical effects that are intensive on both GPU, CPU and VRAM. The VRAM usage during this was sat at 10GB total system (9.6GB just the game alone). Even still, I had a random crash to desktop. So the crashes are clearly not VRAM related, but some type of memory management. RAM use during this session was 13GB for the game alone, 22GB total system. If the game didn't randomly crash, and the mouse panning judder wasn't a thing, then this would very easily be a near perfect port (missing texture assets here and there, and missing shadows in a few areas aside which Rich got on the triple play-through video that I saw too on Ultra).

Even if Naughty Dog didn't primarily develop the port, it's very disappointing that a developer of their status would actually be okay with releasing a game of this caliber on PC in such a state. They're typically very articulate in regards to ensuring a game doesn't release in a fundamentally broken or technically unfinished state, as are the good majority of Sony's developers

So PS5 uses shared mamory for CPU and GPU and to optimize a game for PC they need to transfer many tasks to CPU/RAM, but it will require to do some work and its easier just to use VRAM for most tasks. I remember that RDR2 when it was released used more VRAM than after patches, which means it is possible to decrease VRAM usage for TLOU too and they shoud've done it before release.

TLoU was herky-jerky and crashed on me before the first patch came out. After that, I've (luckily) been doing pretty well with it after 5 hours of play. However, I am using a controller, and have 7900X, RTX 4090, 64GB/6000MHz RAM, and SN850 M.2 w/4k/120Hz. Unfortunately, I doubt most people are using similar specs. Finally, I have no CLUE why the VRAM utilization is so outrageous (16-18GB maxed out settings)!

16+ GB of VRAM usage is insane given that the PS5 has 16GB of SHARED memory, meaning that a good chunk of it is also used for non graphics related tasks. So the amount of memory actually used for graphics must be significantly lower than this on PS5.

Could be that Sony is forcing its first party studios into making PC ports, and either they are ill-experienced in doing so or don't have the resources needed to do it correctly. Naughty Dog engines are proprietary and probably don't scale well going away from the optimization done for PS5. It isn't like it was an Unreal Engine game that can easily port over. I say ND just needs to move on from PC versions and concentrate on their next IP on PS5.

Sony and Naughty Dog deserve admonishment that appropriately represents what customers are feeling. They deserve to be dragged in congruence with the offense. Sony/Naughty Dog releasing the game in this state shows nothing but contempt for their customers. Beyond that, I can't help but feel sorry for the developers and artists who poured countless hours of their lives into creating this game-only to have that work stomped on by executives who decided to release it half-baked so they could cash in on the short-term buzz caused by the success of the HBO show.

With TLOU PC I have to wonder whether they tested the port on anything other than the development system. It would appear to me that they never thought about testing the game on a mid-range, 6C/12T CPU (as we see here with the 5600x). Clearly 6 physical cores are not enough which isn't entirely surprising given that we know the PS5 features a dedicated I/O coprocessor that does nothing but decompress data that's requested from SSD storage. I would guess that this also results in the extremely long loading times - not only long on the 6C/12T 5600x, but slower than the PS5 even on a 13900k.

I wondered if you could have a intermediary box to take 4 display outputs from 4 separate GPUs assigned to work on respective corners or sub sections of the rendered screen. GPU1 = Top left, GPU2 = Top Right etc... Have the 4 GPUs focus on say a 4k output with an external box to display each 1080p output withing the appropriate space of a 4k image then just output to a display through 1 standard cable... Hdmi, displayport, whatevers desired... I like the concept in my head anyway 😅😂🥲 be an awesome way to see older gpus combined to output something better without inter-gpu communication overhead, just have to all be the same response on output... Unless the "sub-box" could readjust on resend without too much added delay 🤔

Questions are a threat to the increasingly shamelessly shady scummy and dishonest practices and products coming out of the industry. The layers of PR and obstruction is the point.
