The thing I absolutely love about the first Motorstorm, and something that is largely absent from its sequels, particularly from the third game, is that the races play out like physics puzzles. Your primary job is to find a line, and control your speed, such that your wheels are on the ground when you need to adjust where you're going. It's a game that's mostly about managing your traction. In that way, it feels closer to games like BeamNG, or maybe even to Spintires, than to other off-road racing games. This kind of physics-based driving system is sadly quite diminished in modern games, and something I very much miss.
@Masarofia
@Masarofia 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, most newer games are quite unsatisfying to drive in the end. I like the Forza Horizon games for example, but it just does not hit as effectively. I was very pleasantly surprised with Gran Turismo 7 though ! The physics are truly remarkable and fun to play with ! Hit the curb and you'll feel your tires losing grip. Bumps on the road are really felt. It's quite amazing and fun to play around ! How I wish we had a new Motorstorm with such physics on new hardware... 50 opponents on a race track like they wanted originally would have been absolutely perfection.
@skakid0
@skakid0 2 жыл бұрын
Such a great explanation, but to add to that, it was also a puzzle game in not only managing traction, but figuring out the nuances of the vehicles and finding the fastest routes for each. You'd end up using all the different routes because one that works for a bike won't work with a truck for example, then on top of that, having to figure it out all over again depending on the opponents vehicles. Definitely wasn't such a thing after the original, PR had a bit but not to such an extent.

The destruction events in Apocalypse are some of the most impressive I've seen in a game yet. I'm guessing that they baked the physics simulations in to animations, much like Valve did for the impressive, large scale physics events that are present in HL2: Episode 2. But damn, the presentation is on an entirely different level with Apocalypse. The tornado in particualr always looked so damn believable to me. They PERFECTLY replicated that debris field with all the pieces of splintered wood and stuff being blown around. looks like it was pulled straight from one of those crazy tornado videos you can find online. Very visceral.

9:55 Thank you so much for this. I've *never* understood why it's so earth shakingly loud, and it's only MotorStorm that seems to have that problem. MotorStorm is why I got a PS3. I was 7, at Target or something, and the store demo let you switch cars. Seeing the Patriot Surger (the Charger knockoff) for the first time, I was done. I needed it. I spent months pining for a PS3. I was such a dork, I'd watch KZbin videos of the game with my PS2 controller in hand so I could pretend to play. That Christmas was great lol. We need a new game so badly. @@wile123456 But you can see in the video how good Pacific Rift looks with technically good emulation in 4k, with FPS boost and anti-aliasing. It just looks like a remaster to me. How can Sony leave MotorsStorm and Driveclub? Unbelievable. Driveclub was an incredible game, beautiful and with weather effects that no one has been able to beat until today, almost 10 years later. And Motorstorm, it was an original concept, and also fantastic. It could easily stand against Forza Horizon'.

It's probably évolution being so ahead of its time both with technology and gameplay that ended up being their demise. The games would becomes classics but not fully appreciated at launch. I love forza, but the lack of crashes makes the game feel slow and tame. The lack of assymetric tracks and routes makes it repetetive, and the child family friendly happy atmosphere makes it agonising to play for too long stretches of time because it doesn't respect your intelligence with loot boxes and annoying characters.

@@samuelhmff The weekly chores in forza doesnt help either. Instead of you the player doing what you want, youre forced into these super specific events that require 1 type of car each and requires a meeta tune. It takes all the freedom away in an open world game. Imagine if Motorstorms apocalypse weekly challenges were the main focus of the game, thats how annoying it is.

I've been playing older PS first party titles and dear lord I miss these franchises. Sony has massively regressed in terms of variety. Motorstorm is an amazing arcade racer. Even the PSP/PS2 release is great. Sly Cooper is one of the greatest platformers series ever, especially Sly 2 which is an incredible stealth platformer that really stands toe to toe with the genre's best. Old school God of War was such a fun hack and slash. Modnation was vastly ahead of its time with online communities. And all those weird small games like that eco puzzle game.
