Man your videos make me laugh and smile so much + I always learn lots. In my experience, the standard DF64 (non titanium burrs) were not all that different to the Niche burrs but I overall preferred the Niche as the sweet spot seemed so much bigger. I now have the SSP brew burrs and WOW - I can't say they are always better than the Niche but the differences are now bigger and in many cases I really prefer the clarity of the brew burrs but having both option of both flat and conical is super fun.

I thought the DF64 stock burrs were pretty high clarity too, not as much as SSPs options but pretty close for espresso, not so great for Filter / brew coffee though. Conical burrs usually do have a larger sweet spot / easier to dial in! Due to larger particle diversity.

are the Itamil Titanium burrs different from the S Steel ! ?
@marcusannegarn8497

@@tarekh1377 no, just a different coating/materials. Titanium will last longer but the steel ones will last basically forever at home anyway so there's no point paying for titanium

at the end I am informed as before...;-((( that tasting is subjektive is no wonder for me - but what I miss is a clearer pointing out of differences... particularly because the graphs (more uniform...) contradict the taste experience...

The DF64 burrs can be aligned to make them spin parallel to each other. Checkout CY’s Caffe Martella Singapore KZbin channel for instructions on how to do this, very easy to do.

Great video! You did not mention if the ssp burrs are well seasoned or just out of the box... With about 4kg of coffee ground you will probably get better results and your impressions could change... Another point is the burrs alignment, the marker test to check the alignment and aluminium foil to correct the aligment could brind also better results for the df64 with ssp. I am learning a lot with your explanations. Waiting for the next video :D

Oh I've had those for like 2~3 years. And I totally used them before. I just forgot when and where. It had got ground stuck on the burrs when I found it. haha I'm not sure there is a way to align the "lean" position burrs. It's super weird. I forgot to put in the video though,, When I change the dial to fine (ie. 15) it starts to make the contact noise. But the noise is gone when I turn to a bit coarser (ie. 17) And it doesn't make the noise till when I go fine enough (ie. 13). So obvious reason that I could find was the pivot rotation

@@coffeeshin2788 Thanks for the reply. Nice to know that the burrs are already "broken-in". You can improve the alignment a bit using the aluminium foil, check this video out kzbin.info/www/bejne/a17Gl2N_lsiea7M The noise of aligned burrs are different from misaligned ones, there are also videos on youtube showing this difference.

Regarding the little sound of chirping: I have it too sometimes. However, I think it’s due to stuck beans. If I clean the grinder and put it on the same setting, it doesn’t chirp anymore. Regarding the wobbling: I think this is due to the bolt and it’s some optical illusion. If you see the side of the burr and film it, it doesn’t have a wobble
@yvindbirkeland7706
@yvindbirkeland7706 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct with stuck beans. If you clean it out, it will not make the sound. The hole for the bolt is not placed with good precision, and therefore it looks bad when you look at the bolt. The surface that the burr sits at is machined with better precision.
@BensCoffeeRants

I just posted a video showing my method of resolving that issue without having to take apart the grinder for cleaning which is what I did the first time I noticed it as well. It's good to know the actual burr touch point first, so without the grinder on, spin the burrs by hand and move it as fine as you can, find the real touchpoint and remember it for reference, so you know the touchpoint is at 0 and you're trying to get the 10 and it's making the noise, you know it's not really burrs touching (unless a bean fragment actually gets stuck and tilts the angle of the burrs somehow!!?) The issue usually happens when you're grinding coarse for another brew method and then try to go back to Espresso setting (due to a coffee particle stuck somewhere). My solution: When it makes that sound, go super coarse like a full rotation coarse maybe, have the grinder running and pump the bellows HARD, you should see something come out and maybe even hear it. Then you should be able to slowly go back to the espresso setting without issue!

Thank you Shin. I agree, having both is enough is more versatile and a cheaper way to go than buying any of the high-end grinders. My DF64 auto shuts-off after 45seconds ... Looking forward the Eureka Mignon single dosing model to come out in the next 6mo.

The sound is called "chirping"...like bird! Your grinders may just be touching each other in parallel however, may not be hyper-aligned. See Lance Hedrick on you tube for video on how to align any flat burr!

@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants 2 жыл бұрын
You can align the burrs with shims like most flat burr grinders, but I don't think the burrs were actually touching, with DF64 as well as P64 and similar grinders you can get some coffee particles stuck that makes it sound like that, people say it's fine to ignore, but if you go way coarser and pump the bellows it would clear it out, that's what I like to do. If they were actually so close to touching, (based on my DF64s I've used at least) the coffee would be waaaaay too fine.

Umm .. try aligning the burr sets with dry eraser. Frankly, I prefer the steel for home because I can hone the burrs. Reds (SSP) and titanium coated would be otherwise ruined.

@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants 2 жыл бұрын
I think the Stock itallmill burrs (titanium or regular non coated, I don't think is supposed to make a difference) has more texture / body than any of the 64mm SSP burrs, well until recently, the Cast (lab sweet style) burrs are what you want for good texture and body. It's kinda conical like.

all depends if you prefer conical burrs or flat then the user experience is a lot better on the niche
@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cenot4ph If you have the money and prefer a flat burr and want the nice workflow of the niche then Lagom P64 is the answer! But I think the preference between flat and conical depends more on your coffee taste preferences, how you prepare the coffee, also some conicals are more like flats, some flats are more like conicals, so it also depends on what specific grinders (and burr sets) you're comparing.

Lifespan .. first the steel burrs will last longer than the grinder itself, but add to that you cannot hone titanium burrs. In a commercial setting of constant hard use, it's a whole different situation.

Niche is a nicer grinder overall, the flat burrs in the DF64 give much more flavour clarity, but much less body and richness. SO it really depends on what you like and what kind of coffee you make as well. BUT having BOTH are ideal as he suggests in the video!
