Its a trend they only do this with their exclusive games and usually when they re remastering it like God of war for example( I know its on pc now) but it was an exclusive and they've remastered it several times. Look at the games they showed off to to show why the ps5 pro is such a big deal. They were just older titles that we already beat but had to re buy a new system and game and zoom in 300x for minor setting like ray tracing. They would not dream of showing anything like black myth or war hammer.

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard people suggesting that FromSoftware's engine might not be compatible with upscalers and that this is why they never added support for things like DLSS, FSR and XeSS on PC. There has to be some reason, because it's stands out as unusual that the biggest game of 2022 didn't have what is a pretty standard feature nowadays. Could also just be Japanese devs being Japanese devs though lol.

Sony could never advertise it, but this feels kind of like the _actual_ main purpose of the PS5 Pro - fixing the botched performance of countless PS5 games out there that just don't run well and will _never_ run well. Especially if you have VRR, any game that manages not to fall below ~35-40fps on the base PS5 will now run smoothly and playably at near-60 framerates on the Pro. _Finally._

The PS5 Pro is improving their framerates without any enhancements or remakes. You need to pay for the console - you don't need to pay for games.

you should've done worst case scenarios like the giant walking mausoleum doing the magic rain attack (the one near ordina liturgical town), or to a lesser extent the dragon in the swamp doing the fire attack (the one near the first limgrave site of grace). it's always these big particle effects that cause the real heavy drops.

Yeah those would be good tests to see here. I know for certain that scene with the "magic rain" mausoleum is a CPU bottleneck though, I've tested that myself on PC with MSI Afterburner and you can clearly see via the on-screen display that all of the processing for that effect is being handled on a single CPU thread. In other words the PS5 Pro's GPU upgrade won't make any difference there. There are also videos of people testing it on KZbin with various CPUs, you don't have to take my word for it.

That mausoleum is so broken. Like, how do you do that? You make 1(one) effect that halves your FPS, you need no diagnostic tool, everyone in the building and outside of it knows exactly what effect is poorly optimized. And instead of spending the time and money to remake that one single effect... You release a shadow ray tracing patch that keeps most light sources non shadow casting. Which undoubtly costs way more to make. Their priorities are so messed up.

From playing on PC I can say that that dragon area in the beginning of the video and some other water based area's with some particles were the only parts where my fps dropped, while in more visually complex parts fps was rock solid, which means that even though the PRO's GPU upgrade is really nice, this might be a CPU problem? Anyway no problems on either PS5 when you just play the PS4 version with the PS4 pro patch :)

Random question… I noticed the HDR toggle was turned off by default when I got this for the PS5 Pro for some reason. Does HDR have a big impact on the frame rate? Originally played this on the Series X and picked it up again after this review. Unfortunately for me the frame rate dips are pretty noticeable and persistent in quality mode. Even noticed some micro stutters 😬

Thats the problem with console games it is up to the developers to patch the game. Console games have locked settings that cannot utilize new features. This is like buying a new 30 or 40 series card and not being able to use it due to restrictions. What if your favorite game never gets patched?

I imagine that the average buyer willing to spend 700 on a console has a 120hz vrr capable display. I'm hoping that going forward Devs can target locked 40fps in quality mode and target a baseline of 49fps in performance mode to stay in the vrr window. I can't tell when a game drops into the 50's with my vrr display and I think the difference between 30 and 40fps is huge. I'm very sensitive to low frame rate and simply can't play a 30fps game but I played Spiderman 2 in 40fps mode and was a great experience.

A 30-35% performance boost is very big if you ask me. In the PC world this only happens on a new generation and even then its rare. Pro is mid way within a generation, and that improvement is quite impressive not gonna lie.

Yea most of them only had a 10 to 15 fps drops on ps5 so the pro should clean that up with rt of course. But capcom has to patch it to take full advantage of the silicon.

@@RandomGamingMoments925 They say it in the video, the games are using 100% of the GPU. The architecture is mostly the same but the in instruction set is probably expanded on for PSSR. Elden ring does not use advanced upscaling tech, it outputs a raw 4k. The game being unpatched with a locked frame rate of 60 tells the story. It can't keep it consistent. All that to say, the pro is doing an amazing job but i figured it'd have a raw output of a 6800.

I would call it a bad deal at this point. The builds we were making for around $700 are outperforming it by 15%, and they get FSR 3 Frame Generation and XeSS to replace PSSR. If you wait for the RX 8000 series builds are probably going to be even cheaper than the Pro for better performance. If you don't want a PC, which would make sense because if all the games you may have on PlayStation, then yeah, this is the best performance you can on consoles.

The cpu is still gimped, I’ve been watching Brazil pixel uploads & even on games like Alan wake 2 with official patch the cpu is holding it back, you get res boosts but only slight fps improvements because of the faster ram.

I respect it, alot of games are still GPU bound and are reaching 60fps+. dope to hear GT7 are delivering 4K120fps locked, close as we'll get to a PC version until they decide to finally do it. As always its the games that get some developer time that will impress and confuse the most. only bummer is their decision to keep the CPU super conservative, I was really willing to excuse them hearing that it might be 6nm but now having more information that it seems to be at least a fork of 5/4nm I really dont get it. I know they want to keep it conservative as an extension of PS5 generation but just a bit more CPU grunt would have done wonders, this is the second time the mid-gen system kept the same CPU with just adjusted clocks but 10 percent is almost a nothing burger for the CPU heavy titles that will be stock at 30fps. Overall I think its a good machine and I see a lovely path for the next generation, hopefully they can do more to up the value and try to normalize the pricing. I don't find it very expensive, they just made bad decisions on the consumer front, 2TB instead of 1TB, No Disk Drive, No Special accessory to set it slightly premium to the perception (like make it moan on boot)

You could have built a better performing PC than PS5 with a 6700xt for $700 some years ago, and then could have upgraded to a better than ps5 pro 6800xt now for $400 that runs elden ring at 60fps easily (i had the exact card). Thats already cheaper than a PS5+PS5 Pro together with better performance (not even accounting for online fees). When PS6 comes out a couple years later, you could just put a 7900 XTX for probably less than $700 and that will give you a 80% jump over the ps5 pro.

At that price point 60FPS will always be a topic. Yes even at the PS5 Pro price. It wouldnt be if games stayed the same. But they change as well. So 60FPS will probably stay the console sweet spot for a while. Maybe oneday there will be a huge leap in tech. Maybe with PS6 maybe 7. Nobody knows

This thing will sing like a canary as time goes on. This is a much better investment for me than upgrading my PC to a 4070

Whilst I don’t know for certain, I’d be very surprised if it is. The lack of Dolby Vision is consoles manufacturers not wanting to pay the licence fee for every single console when most people won’t use it rather than a technical limitation. Would be very pleased if it did get added though!

It's crazy how much you guys love VRR now. At the start of the gen, the channel basically treated it like a throwaway technology that no one had access to, and its relevance in comparisons and making games feel better to play, while having better image quality, despite whatever a fps counter said, was ignored and minimized. What are you talking about? They've all talked about the benefits of VRR for years and even complained how the PS5's VRR mode isn't as good as Xbox's. Rich even made a dedicated video about it in 2020, talking about the benefits before the PS5 or Xbox Series came out. It wasn't really recommended as a go to solution because manufactures weren't, and sometimes still don't implement it. But also from the software perspective, it wasn't always working as expected. From a 2018 article that Richard wrote: "It's potentially a revolution in the console space - just as it has been for PC gamers. Variable refresh technology is a big win for improving the game experience, lessening judder and removing screen-tearing. ...- FreeSync - that has been built into Xbox One, and we've finally had the chance to test the technology. Clearly it's still early days, but at its best, the results are quite remarkable. ...Microsoft deserves kudos for embracing the future of display technology and laying the groundwork for support on what is likely to evolve into a very important feature."
