Ok, cool/useless stories from Tom: The cat dozer with the pony motor is almost exactly like a dozer my dad had when I was a kid. Was an old D6, had a cab/rollcage thing on his though, the pony motor never seemed to run good, and was badly down on power. My dad found that some company makes a 24v starter conversion that bolts onto the diesel and then the pony motor was just for show more or less, or since the coolant was shared, and the exhaust pipe from the pony motor ran through the intake of the diesel it preheated the intake air, so if it was cold outside you could start the pony motor and just use it as worlds least efficient grid heater. Then the 555B that started but puked oil everywhere is almost identical to the 555A that I have, 3 cyl diesel, fires right up and runs amazing, I need to pull the boom assembly back off as the pin and bushings for the arm pivot has broken or something, I replaced them a few years ago, I suspect where its just been so beat I had to weld the new bushing into the hole that was reamed out from all the slop it had, so I probably just need to do a better job welding it in as it acts like my weld broke, has a little play and makes crunching noises. that's a project for this winter though.

Actually, not a lot has changed...I still build random stuff at the local yard with the owner/guys that work there. You never know what you might find tucked away.

Awesome video! That's a GMC 270 in the old forklift, 216 is the Chevrolet. The 270 is a truck motor from the 1940s to the 1950s. They powered WWII 6x6s also. Very desirable motor for hotrodding, they ran them with 4 - 5 carb manifolds on Bonneville in the old days. Just revived one of these myself.

There’s a reason it all ended up in the scrap yard. Sometimes fixing it is more $$$ then it’s worth in scrap. Sure someone could “save” it but you’d have to be willing to have the money at or over scrap prices.

That pony engine has a magneto and when you hook a wire to it you are just grounding it out and killing it. That pony engine will start without a battery if you rebuild the magneto - the D6 my dad had didn’t have a starter and we started it with a rope wrapped around the flywheel. I can tell you anything you want to know about that late fifties D6 Cat.

@jacobbonney7846
@jacobbonney7846 3 жыл бұрын
That was a magneto on the dozer, I'm not sure what you had the wire was connected to that came off of the magneto post but it you put that to ground it will not allow the coil in the magneto to charge and build spark. Also if you were providing an external power supply to it then that can also damage it and will keep it from firing. Magnetos create their own power and need to outside electrical source. The ground lug on the side of them is used as the kill switch.

Pretty sure that pony motor ignition was of the magneto type which doesn't use outside power to fire. In fact that think that terminal you connected 12v+ to is actually the ground terminal connection that would be grounded out to shut the motor off.
