Paddling in to surf this wave is a high light in my life. Surfing that wave and looking at the seaweed and starfish visible on the bottom is indeed mesmerizing. Paddling back in the dark with the seals and the incandescent alge lighting up the bow wave and paddle strokes was surreal.

Hey Dylan, we have a similar (but smaller and bumpier) river/tidal wave here in Limerick city, Ireland. It needs a near spring low tide to function, but also needs a decent flow in the river Shannon. In the winter the flow in the river is too strong, the water levels never get low enough to break. Almost an exclusive spring /early winter wave. The window in autumn is very small but possible. Very weird wave. Never seen another surfer on it, but there is a group of kayakers who are on it every day it is working. They are delighted to see a surfer turning up. Great bunch

Dylan, was Nicks board shaped that way to stop it curling or did the nose come off in a previous outing. Also where’s he from?
@Nick-zy9tx2 ай бұрын
Hi Marcel, I started shaping my own boards shortly after I started surfing Skook. The squared-off board I designed to give maximum floatation and surface area to catch the wave at the largest of flows. It's a playboat/ mini-sim inspired hull. The green one is more of a groveller. I'm from Sydney, Australia originally, moved to Canada in 2017 and started surfing Skook in 2020. Nick

@DylanGravesYT2 ай бұрын
Thank u! Certain river waves / tidal bores can be super fun, sometimes chill, but even tho they look small ( or chill) this can be deceiving, as the amount of water you are riding is usually more than you deal with on any wave of similar size in the ocean … but as long as you’ve taken the necessary safety precautions into account and are feeling comfortable with your exit strategy, it can be extremely fun and at times chill :)
@topherdean1024Ай бұрын
@@DylanGravesYT Ya, I can imagine. I've seen guys ride the Waimea river mouth when they dig out the sandbar, but that's the only standing wave I know of in Hawaii and I don't live on Oahu. I'll just stick to old school paddle in ocean waves. 🤔 But I remain open minded, you never know.

Skookum (Big) Chuck (water) isnt too far from Earls Cove just south of Powell River and norht of Sechelt on the BC coast. Porpoise Intet is on a shelf and that shelf and tidal change is the main reason for Skookumchuck ... its a pretty wild place, I remember a video when I was younger of a Tug and Barge going under getting caught in the slack tide. pretty crazy spot and if you ever miss the ferry to Powell River, it was always fun to drive down and watch it go

Nice !! What does the whirlpool do? Can't get out of it? Why don't you also use a vest like kayakers?
@DylanGravesYT2 ай бұрын
Take you deep really quickly and once you go deep your under layers of water behaving erratically, and it may be hard to figure out when to make your push back to the surface without panicking 😬 My theory was if I can paddle better and avoid whirlpools altogether that made me go for not having a vest as opposed to wearing one and ending up in the same scenario with more gear on 🤷♂️ once your in a whirlpool vest or no vest it’s keeping you down for as long as it wants
