I recently got to visit Rome, Italy for my first time
And… wow
I see all the normal sites, yes…
But I hope you know by now that everything I do, leads to the coast.
And something you might expect me to find…
Is a local, who might know a thing or two about an interesting surf scene 30 minutes outside the capital city of Rome.
This video is about my experience hanging out with Italian surf guru Roby D’amico and checking out a really charming surf scene in the Santa Marinella area. Expectations on what the Italian surf was like (as you will see towards the end of the video) were well exceeded.

Dylan, I'm really enjoying your style of traveling. You show a mix of people, landscapes, info and culture which is much more realistic beyond just dropping into a destination on a good day and surfing. Shout out to the your editing and camera crew as well. there work is slick. I was staying in Turin ten years ago and found great waves in Genoa and locals leant me a wetty and board and fun was had thanks to those generous crew, Memories forever.

Surfing the med is always a bit weird. The swell rarely lasts long, super short period, but at the same time, there is barely any tide. I remember surfing one place, there were waves for something like one hour, and then nothing. I miss it a bit.

Cool to see that a surf community has developed in Italy. This video brings back some great memories of surfing uncrowded Europe a long time ago......42 years ago, I surfed Anzio (not far from Rome) on my way to the Atlantic coast of Europe. Back then, it was quite a spectacle with hundreds of locals coming to check out the Aussie guy doing something they had never seen before. Even Portugal back then was pretty quiet, there was no local surf industry or surf shops and a very small number of grass roots locals who couldn't easily get stuff like wax, wetsuits, leg ropes or even board shorts - remember, in 1980 there was no such thing as the internet and ordering stuff online. I remember giving my spare leggy (surf leash to you Americans) to a local surfer at Super Tubes (Peniche) and he was so stoked. Anyway, very cool video, Dylan.

So sick. You scored. I was there for 3 weeks (visiting family/wedding) and I got 1 shoulder high clean day. Homie had the local knowledge for sure. Btw, the locals aren’t that friendly. You had the golden key. Think surfing the ave in Santa Cruz with a I love San Jose sticker on your board. That’s how I was treated.

Surfed Sardegna couple years ago and had the worst experience. Surfed all over the world in world class waves but these were the most aggressive locals I ever met.. Threatening to kill me over a waist high wave. Love Italy tho! Beautiful country and lovely people (outside the water haha).

The last spot you were to is probably Santa Severa or near by. Thanks for the good and very funny to watch footage :) The only big problem when it comes to surf nearby Rome is that you need to wait for the winter season and be prepared to feel the cold water and the cold winter hurting your ears while you are in the cold water. It is COLD, it is very COLD.
