So ekagata means act of being tranquil with relaxed step? Instead of tranquility achieved through suppression by absorption concentration? To summarize ekagata by your def is that it is an alert unified mind on one object but not yet absorption concentration since you allow the mind to move?

Please do! There are many benefits. A long life and you will not die from an accident. You will be free from guilt and remorse as a result of no wrong doing. You will be reborn in a heavenly realm. You will always have what you need - you may not become rich but money will always be there for your needs. :-)

I sussed it over yesterday, and I'm not really convinced that "dukha" meant suffering originally. Suffering is a feeling that is too specific to lump everything in life under it, and in for frames of reference Gautama tells outright not to get identified with feelings. "Dukha" is something like tension [stored or percieved unconsciously in the body]. So it's something like "all phenomena have the nature of tension, transience and are impersonal". no tension -> no contact -> no recognition (vijnana), so it's as if the phenomenon wasn't even there. If only I understood what he meant by citta..

I got a bit confused when he said that trying to change things makes you suffer. I assumed most of the time we try to change them in a way that doesn't really work? Because sometimes we have choices, we can decide, take action and do something more or less the way we wish etc. Hm. Maybe I'm taking this interpretation of "not changing" too far and that's the problem.

There are many ways of going about this practice through which you wont harm yourself and will gain progress very quickly. Ven. Sir has his own, unique way of looking at satipatthana practice, but is not the only way. Also, onepointedness does not suppress the hindrances, the reason the hindrances come back when you're not diligent in your practice of mindfulness is much more complex than he explains in the video. We should definitely stick to one way of practicing, once we find one that best fits our character, but we should never say there is only one way in which this practice actually works, that is falling into dogmatism, which is certainly not what the Buddha taught.

Dangerous! Wow - You can come out to Dhamma Sukha center and talk to people and see how deep they get in their meditation. In just days or a few weeks. Unlike other meditation centers we have no psychologists on site to undo the damage of normal concentration meditation. As Leigh Brasington says in his book on jhanas Right Concentration 3% who practice concentration (in the way we teach) will go crazy. But what's 3% I guess. Absorption concentration without the relax step is the dangerous practice.

@@davidjohnson8218 I apologize for the comment. I have not practiced in the way the Ven. Sir indicates (nor will I attempt to), so I cannot say for certain that it is misleading. I will point out that assuming that in any other meditation center there is a psychologist ready to deal with people that go "crazy" (very bad word for a buddhist to use by the way) because of the technique that is being taught, is to say the least, reckless. Also there are several points on which I disagree with the Ven. Sir about his interpretation of the scriptures, and I can see why many others would advice against it. That being said, If the way you guys are going about the practice is actually allowing you to make insight progress, all power to you. But to say that any other way of going about this practice is useless and does not bring one much progress, is very irresponsible and does not reflect reality. There are many other ways of gaining insight into reality through this practice, and they should be acknowledged too. Mindfulness and onepointedness for example, do not suppress the hindrances, this is a reality that I have experienced for myself, so I am certain there is a misconception there, or at least, a lack of understanding in regards of other ways of practice. It also gives the idea that it is the actual way this mindfulness is being taught by any other buddhist school what is causing harm to people, and this, to me, is a very narrow minded point of view. There are many other points I could discuss with you, but as you may well understand, that would be fruitless. Again, I apologize for the comment, it wasn't fair, I will edit it to try to make my point in a non bias way. May you be happy and free from suffering.

Where does this 'object' come in? In my interpretation the object is the whole. Whether you call it a pin or the collective is the same thing. The concentration is in the body, as the mind meanderes.

Maybe the mind prints memories on the brain through emotional tension, and that is why hindrances need a good dose of relaxation so they are less likely to re-arise as reified thought from memory.

In the Zen tradition you don’t go so deep either. More of an open awareness. So you mindfully can see the hindrance. Access concentration would be more of a hindrance. So Vilaramsi has a lot of back up of his teaching

Wait. When he talks about thoughts and opinions is he referring to the incorrect ones? It doesn't make sense the correct ones are part of this process... because... You actually feel better once you know how something (a situation) works? And when he mentions doubt, I assume he is talking about ignorant doubt that makes you cling to wrong ideas. If there is zero doubt a person cannot learn anything useful: she may believe everything that is told to them.
