It's just scripted, and not real. Movie theater attendants never bust anyone sneaking food in movie theaters. I know because I have done this before(even snuck a few soda in my bag) back in San Diego, but never got caught. The only way someone would be caught by an attendant is if they have a weapon(IE a gun or knife) in the movie theater planning to assault an innocent bystander, harassing others or various criminal activities. The reason the Owen was caught wasn't because he was sneaking food in the theater, but rather he lied about being a senior citizen just to get in for a discounted price. He tried to throw his little brother, Mikey, under the bus, but the manager wasn't fooled and told him that he had to leave.

Im british and its so weird for this to be a rule to me. we can bring in our own popcorn and drinks (most cinemas are in malls (or high streets as we call it) and near my cinema there's a popcorn stand where people get popcorn from there. its less than what you can get in the cinema but its also cheaper too. Also people bring their own bottles or cans of drink. People can bring their own sweets and all that too but its not common at least for what ive seen.
