In Tamil language, the meaning of the the word "Odiyaa" in beginning is "Come on". Actually the real pronounciation is "Odi vaa" and while talking its changed as "Odiyaa". In this song, the grand parent calling out their grand children to enjoy the mother nature. And, the true meaning of "en saami" (which is pronounced as enjaami while talking fast) is "my lord". Our grand parents loved us more than anything (I'm very much blessed that they raised me in my childhood). hence they called and treated us precious gems as their gods. Those were golden times we had those days. Eventhough we did something wrong, we have not been punished and our grand parents humbly saying not to do with lots of love and after hearing that, we never do it again. The lyrics are like a song from grandchildren singing out about how everything in nature is connected from the kingfisher to the caterpillar to the peacocks to the elephants and the rains. They're calling out to people to “enjoy, my lords" like the forefathers and -mother’s passed it on with so much richness. They sing about how our homes, our cities, our countries are built from the poop that chicken left from feeding on grains grown by our own people, and how the seeds left on the plants are here for the next generations to feed on, so take care and be respectful. Arivu's different older voice represents our grandmother's voice who is very much worrying about the nature.

The song is based on Arivu's grandmother's story, where her family was taken as a slave to a different country (during British era) and got exiled later and she had to return back to her homeland - India, which she had no idea about. This song is his grandmother telling him (and the younger generation) about her story and asking them to enjoy life, the land and the fruits of their labor and saying that this land belongs to everyone (even dogs, foxes and cats), when they didn't have a land of their own during their time.

Ride on the elephant, it’s a proverbial prose in its native language (Tamil) it means we should live a life to its fullest and enjoy the moments of life as riding on elephant and yet there is an alternate definition as well that raid your problems away from your life like riding on elephant. However in this context the first meaning suites perfectly.

Riding in Elephant--- relates to the next line word.. "mummmari", which means rain in 3 seasons to enhance the irrigation.. which makes the ppl richer and wealthier.. when we'll get mummari is, all ppl shd be good following a good leadership.. all shd have same vision of improvement. King (who' riding on elephant) ruling the ppl , and all ppl join together and follow him for mummari... the lyricist is calling all to follow the leader to get the mummari.... Elephant riding is not bad...I'm proud to say we Tamil ppl only managed to train Elephant for our war, as as our domestic animal for farming... " yaanai kati pore additha samugam naanga"

This is a Tamil language belonging to south India. Lyrics penned by Arivu who also lends the male voice and that of the coarse voice of old lady. The song depicts a granny calling her grand son to enjoy the elements of nature that were nourished by her ancestors. Saying the universe is for all creatures. There is also a powerful underlying melancholic message of the dark skinned indegenous communities whose toil has all along been exploited by those at the helm.of affairs. In India the dark skinned natives are dubbed as low caste ironically they were the ones who created a glorious Indus Valley Civilization.

'Ride on elephant' is pointed at the landlords (enjaami) whom his (Arivu's) grandma used to work for. Arivu's grandma is telling the story to her grandson by pointing out that her landlords used to enjoy all the benefits of the land, rode on elephants, showered in rain and what not while the workers toiled everyday working on those lands.

Ambari.. (riding on the elephant) is usually done for god or royal family. They are trying to say you are given this royal privilage because of ancestor, nature, bird, fox etc have collectively done these work in the past. So come ride like a king/god on the elephant. Also to mean, leave something for future generation to enjoy. The girl in golden chair is our current generation.

The song is about arivu (the male singer) having a conversion with his grandmother, who was put through labour (farming without any right to the yield) . The line "ride the elephants" actually is a mockery to the people who looked down on the farmers while on their elephants. The song has a more political aspect about the how their ancestors were enslaved. "Enjaami" is actually what they used to call the lords/masters who enslaved them, hence the song sarcastically depicts this by saying "enjoy enjaami". Hope this helped.

enjaami = en + saami. "en" -> mine and "saami" -> God. The literal meaning of enjaami - "My God". The contextual meaning here -> Grandparents affectionately call their grandchildren "enjaami" which reflects how much they love them(equal to a god). Elders also use this term when trying to console/comfort children as an expression of how much they love them. That different voice that Arivu is singing with in-between is supposed to mimic grandmother's(elders) voice. The lines that were sung using this different voice are meaningful colloquial sayings by rural elders that were passed down from older generations. Another aspect is the way he is singing these lines is using "Oppari" - a traditional form of music that is still used in funerals for lamenting. The music instruments used were traditional Tamil music instruments(all the drums) and the drum elements are of Tamil traditional music not of African tribal music as everybody is assuming. Also the video backdrop with tribal people is supposed to highlight how old the Tamil civilization is. Tamil is one of the oldest classical languages in the world and possibly the oldest civilization with thousands of years of history. Everyone makes tribe elements connections to Africa which is mistaken..

This song explains how people from India especially from Tamil Nadu were sent to many countries like Sri Lanka , Mauritius or even West Indian islands like Guyana to work in tea estates, they were made to work like slaves but they were not rewarded with anything like a land or even a house to live. Once the estates were developed after many many years , these people were sent back to India, now they come back to India and own nothing. They lost their lands and rights. Again they start from scratch working in estates in India. These are forgotten people who had to rebuild their lives. This song explains how the land owners (Enjaami's) "enjoy" inspecting the people working hard on their lands riding on elephants ( as it mentions in the song ) in a sarcastic way.

U got connected with the singing, music composure, the vocalist, rendition, instrumentation and beautiful lyrics that conveys a simple yet powerful message for our eternity :- TOGETHERNESS in DIVERSITY with RESPECT for RIGHTS of ALL Creatures-Creation Plant & Animal to LIVE in HARMONY with US all without exhausting Mother Nature & SHE will HEAL and SHIELD us ALL if ONLY we ALLOW Mother Nature to do HER works at her PACE. The language is Tamil (S.Indian - where is Chennai is based) and just as ARR & u both stating it's just the start n eventually the culmination of other languages will follow from diff global artist & background to make it global - good effort & foresight Arivu attempts to sing in his grandmothers voice !! Dhee is the singer of the famous "Rowdy Baby" song hitting in more than 1 billion viewer count in just KZbin alone (not counting other social media platforms) Cuckoo - is the Cooing sound of the Cuckoo bird calling out (sounds - cuckoo cuckoo) & so the bird was named cuckoo bird.in English Just as this song is calling out to all to come together and live together in harmony as a family by respecting every creature's rights & belonging to be so and also sacrifices made by our elders to ensure the world's sustainability as we are all interdependent and should not exhaust our resources thru our irresponsible acts pushing us towards excessive consumerism directed by egoistic & greedy political leaders & biz entities covering people being displaced for all the bad reason as war, slavery, conflict and the likes n they making livelihood away from as refugees or otherwise due to discrimination. There's more to it if you go deeper ... it's about displacement of people for economic reasons, discrimination at all levels, disparity & disproportionate distribution of wealth as seen by certain biz Corp & political people but very the farmers who puts the food on ur plate is left behind struggling & scraping to make a living n let's come together as one to change and correct the ills sowed n directed by the many few (max 100-500) over the many (6 billion). Let's hv compassion to spread compassion thru unity with diversity over divisibility Enjaami is colloquially pronounced, with a village slang But it's actually EN Sammy (My Dear, My Beloved, My lord) and such is a Tamil endearment term usually used by elders to address their children or loved ones; esp the grandparents call their grandkids as such. Oodiya ... is actually Oodi Va (come running) to me or here (as we beckon come quickly to me) in Tamil language (which is marginally related & spoken in Central African countries too) Vaango Vaango = Come over, Come over (is sing with a Sri Lankan Tamil slang/twang) instead of Vaanga Vasnga (actual Tamil) U identified the young singer holding the hand of the elder to give support to their endeavour of custom for respect & sacrifices made for the benefit of one and all including various creature's sustainability let alone survival of our humankind

👍 riding on elephant is a metaphor. Live a happy glorious life . It has to be red in context of next line " mummari" which means abundant rain ( 3 times in a year) as a sign of prosperity. The lyrics is the heart and soul of this song with lot of metaphor which even we Tamizhs need to listen keenly to understand. And listen repeatedly. 👍literal translation is not entirely correct Bcos Tamizh is a rich language and masks lots of meaning. 🙏👍 it's an amazing song. . Pl. Note in second half a kind of mournful music ( oppari ) during funeral is superimposed deliberately !

Thanks to Vijay Kumar explaining this songs in detail, "This song with the exact meaning which is missing from the English subtitles. Some people have still misunderstood the song with the wrong assumption. Let me explain... “Parai” & “Murasu” (Musical instrument) is played in the beginning of the song. “Parai” & “Murasu” is purely belongs to Tamil tribes (everyone thinks it's an African music played in the beginning) but it's not, followed by they showed “Salangai” wears in both the legs & hands which is followed by the Tamil tribes to express their feelings by the way of dance. This is mostly during auspicious moment, festival, wartime etc.,. Hope you have seen Salangai” wore in “Bharatnatyam” which is a major form of Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam is also one of the oldest classical dance traditions in India which is often are used to express Hindu religious stories and devotions. So all this shown in the beginning of the song to make positive vibes. And then the soil is shaking. That means, the land is shaking/hearing/feeling/enjoying to the music. And the girl opens her hand from hiding and coming out to say what is emerging right now... rest is the song... Grandpa is called as “Thatha” in Tamil She is also singing “Cuckoo Cuckoo” hope everyone know it's a bird. But which bird? The answer is given in the next line. “Annakili Annakili” which is a name that has Tamil origin for girl/women and also it's name of the bird as well which is seen widely in Tamil Nadu 50 years back and now no more because of the expansion of development like Cellphone tower, the loss of forests, plains and other natural systems into agriculture, mines, and urban developments, the draining of swamps and other wetlands, and logging reduce potential habitat for many species Let's move on further, somehow now you got the context of the song but still the subtitles are not the exact meaning represented in English which caused not understanding the deep message. So the song start with saying Grandpa weeding out the fields and he finds a kingfisher bird in the trunk hole. The frog is swimming in the water. And here lyrics says the caterpillar is sister. How come? It is Because frog eats all kinds of worms except caterpillar since it has a toxic body condition. So caterpillar can go and stay near the frog without fear. This is the concept of these lyrics... Further, the rapper is singing that my grandma’s has shrink bag (wallet) with betel (Paan) and nuts (Supari) which we have seen already in our life. And then he is telling his own lifestory about his grandma which you can refer the subtitles. Now the girls is saying that our ancestors left this soil with all these blessings. Our forefathers lived across the river banks and did fertile fields. So at that time, every birds and animals felt safe and happy. Our ancestors also fertile the fields across the river and live happily. She also say that the lakes and ponds belong to everyone, not only for humans that includes birds and animals. During middle of the song, especially, when the male singing part comes, it is consider as the Mother Nature is singing or saying that “I planted fives trees, Nurtured a beautiful garden, My garden is flourishing, Yet my throat remains dry” that means the Mother Nature gave us 5 element. They are Earth, Space, Water, Air and Land, then why are you still struggling to survive in this world? Because we have failed to save and look after nature. That's why people suffer from not being able to live with nature everywhere in the world. Everyone thinks that this guy is enjoying and dancing 🤦🏻‍♂️that's not the actual meaning of the video. To conclude the song... the Mother Nature is also asking (when male singing part) ... This is a serious statement “What the matter my dear? my sugarcane? my grandson? and then it says “Bitter Gourd in my canopy, it has given us seeds, Left by our mom and dad... (By the time they shows the old man smiling and feeling happy) Everyone thinks that they are Farmers or Someone came without meaning... actually they are all our ancestor, they left the seeds through our mom & dad... so what is meant by “Seeds” (it's a hidden message) the exact meaning of “Seeds” represent the “Current modern lifestyle” who failed to save the mother nature. In result, Air pollution, Water pollution, poor management of waste, global warming, growing water scarcity, preservation and quality of forests, biodiversity loss, and land/soil degradation etc we face today. Mother Nature is crying and lamenting to express the own grief and also want to share and assuage. Because of this strong message, this album got very popular all over the world. At the end of the song, they show the group of people which is a root of how humans diversified from our ancestors to till date. Thank you once again for your valuable time to read this lengthy message to get understand this song"

All these comments are not fully accurate. Arivu talks about the song and explains while enjaami is a term of endearment, it is also a term used by indentured laborers like his grandmother for owners of the plantations. When his grandmother came back from Sri Lanka where she was taken as laborer on plantations. When she and her family came back, they had no land there too. Now the enjaami is him, Arivu and young lower caste people of his generation, exhorting them to enjoy nature and take care of it as it is THEIR labor specifically that has shaped the land and not of those who have not worked on it, "The rooster, whose excretions fertilized the forest that turned into the country and then into their home." The contrast is made between those who labor and those who reap its benefits, the lower castes work and the upper castes are the landowners who benefit off their work. "Hen lays the egg, who dolled the peacock?" and "Grandpa weeding the fields, Who's in the trunk? The Kingfisher (a pretty bird)". The history of the lower castes is a "bitter gourd on the canopy", a painful, unpleasant history (the throat is yet dry line is apt here too). It is this painful history, almost a non-history because the lower castes weren't allowed to study and thus could not accurately write their own stories, histories, myths. A lot of history is thus lost and very little can be accurately saved by oral traditions.

Just a little info from Tamil culture. Riding on the elephants is not cruel to the animal. Incase elephant is equally friendly like a dog or a horse. It doesn’t hurt the animal but Hunting them does and it happens everyday by hunters all around the world. Elephant is considered as a god in fact he is called Ganesha.
