Multicolor 3 Layer Color Custom Vinyl Decal RegMarks

I video of me applying the layers needed for this great 3 color Old School Harley Davidson Vinyl Decal after cutting the parts from my vinyl cutter/plotter. I use the Registration mark method. I find that to be the best way to line everything up for a nice even installation. I use two 0.2" triangles. one on either side top corners. The smaller size RegMarks work better for me. You may want a larger RegMark. I also flip one triangle upside down on one side. This is not needed but more of a personal preference. I just find I can get the parts lined up perfectly with that set up.. What works for me may not for you but it's a start and will give you a great idea what needed in your own multicolor vinyl projects. I can't breath while watching how you center the top image onto the base image. What I do with this procedure is stick the base image vinyl with masking tape so that it wont move then spray it liquid soap and water. Then apply the top image vinyl and centering it before pressing it with squeegee. It works fine with me.

I belive you are referring to the white squares are just the backing.. Backing paper is always white with the exception of white vinyl. White vinyl has a light blue backing so that the vinyl can be seen.. If the backing was white and the vinyl white it blends together and not seen very well or easily displayed. It allows it to stand out... Backing is very high gloss so the the vinyl (Sticker) can peal away from it easily... It makes transferring colors possible.. It would be impossible to layer the colors any other way..

Yo that was an absolute amazing video! I love what you did with that sticker and the process and showing how it's done mad respect. How are you able to sell the Harley-Davidson logo like that without worrying about copyright infringement? I am new just getting into the vinyl t-shirt sticker thing trying to figure out how much I have to worry about getting in trouble for using a design I shouldn't. -Also I've seen those big rolls of transfer tape in quite a few videos I was curious what it was called and where I can buy it from? Because the small rolls of transfer tape I get I don't look like that and they have backings on them from what I can see it's just one film wrapped over on itself with no backing I like it a lot, I would like to use that stuff it looks like it works great. Are you implying I am violated copyright infringement laws? Be cause I hope you are... I have been in the bizz over 15 years now and have have my own images... When you make a video how to cut and image and use a image owned by another company does not prove copyright infringement... ... Great job on the video. But... there is another way... this took 8 minutes.. you can do it much faster if you use a light table. I'd say you could cut that down to about 1-2 minutes.. progressive layering starting same way ending with the orange. and use paper masking.. I hate the clear mask.. it seems too sticky for me. Just my 2 cents..

Thank you .. I don't have a shadow box or light table so I use the Regmark method and have been for years now. I have become quite fast and efficient doing it.. The clear mask is more appealing to the buyer plus it does help for the regmark method but not needed.. Also I use medium to low tack premask. High tack is just to high for most applications

Darin, after seeing your video I ordered a VinylExpress R series plotter. I first thought the plotter would work on a Mac, that was my first disappointment. So I took my pc and tried to install the software that came with it. That is a bit confusing because when I bought the plotter from the SignWarehouse website it said it would come with Lxi Expert software but when I wanted to install it on the pc it was asking me for an activation code which I did not get... So now I am sitting her with a new plotter that I can't even connect to my computers, not the mac and not the pc. I am going to call tech support on Monday and see how this will turn out... I hope I can get this thing working, this is my first experience with a plotter and it is not going the way I expected it. Any suggestions? Anybody that runs one of these on a Mac with some specific software?

There should have been a a paper with a sticker on it reading you pass-code key for windows.. As for Mac it states on the web site that LXi software does not run on Mac like many other vinyl or NON vinyl software don't, and suggests using (Cutting Master 3). . . www.signwarehouse.com/blog/mac-software-solutions-vinyl-signmaking/ . . But on a good note I have had that little machine for 3 1/2 years and it never had a single issue with it and have cut thousands of decals and many Truck/Tailor signs.. It is a super beginner machine.. You are also going to have to create Vector images.. Not sure if you are familiar with that but vinyl cutters do not read standard image files like .JPEG, .BMP but you can convert a standard image file to a vector but the image will almost always need cleaning up... I did this when I got my machine running... It is not as easy as plug it in and start cutting.. And that I found out the hard way.... I dropped a standard image in the LXi software and clicked cut and nothing happened.... Now I use Adobe Illustrator for making my vector files and only use the LXi Software to only cut them.. Some of the software you get with the cutter only supports cutting them and not making the vectors... Like VE LXi Apprentice Cloud only cuts vector only.. If you need any help with this process I can give you some ideas that would have helped me when I first plugged in my machine... I knew nothing about cutting vinyl and had to learn on my own from scratch.....

Darrin, I got the Registration code, sign warehouse emailed it to me and I'm cutting now but, I am having a problem and I wonder if you maybe have a solution for it... I am cutting the name ROOFING PRODUCTS and if you look at the letters, they have rounded corners instead of sharp 90 degree corners. If you send me your email, I'll show you some pictures so you can see what I mean. The logo I'm cutting has also a larger name: OMG and there the corners are fine. The word OMG is cut on a different type of vinyl and the letter size is much bigger and bolder. The words ROOFING PRODUCTS are smaller font size and less stiff vinyl... Any idea why it does that? I thought the speed did it so I slowed the cutting down, same result; knife pressure is also not helping...

Yeah if you have a vinyl plotter/printer which I don't. they are very expensive to. like a cheap good one is like 10k.. Also printing fades quicker at times depending on plotter and ink. With rolls of vinyl it's 3 mil thick and color is solid though all 3 mils not just a small layer of ink over solid white vinyl. If you only have acess to cutter this is your only option to multi-color images...

That is just the paper backing. Some vinyl companies use blue backing paper only with white vinyl so you can see it better...

+wiifan62 It does take some practice but II never let the transfer tape touch the art work, only when squeegee it into place.. try going slower and use pretty good force when placing it and let the transfer tape float.. Squeegee it out evenly and don't go to much to the left or right, try and stay centered...

To be fair it is a good video but it does presume that you already have a basic understanding of registration marks as this is how he is lining up each layer very accurately with little fuss, small triangle or "L" shape in the top two corners on each piece.

The image is 10 inch in diameter... I charge 15¢ a square inch for Multi-color images.. 10¢ for single color images... So this image is 10" x 10"=100' Square inches... 100 x 0.15¢= $15.00

+Ayrton Soria That's just the backing that the vinyl comes attached to when I purchase the rolls. All backing is usually white but some companies use the light Blue backing to make it easier to see when weeding... you will only find that with the white vinyl...... There is 3 parts to a decal... You have the Vinyl or Decal itself... The backing, in this case is Blue, and last you have the application or transfer tape... They have it in clear like shown in the video and Non-Clear almost like masking tape... Same color as masking... The clear allows Multi-color decals easier to see where to line up the regmarks...

The blue paper is just the backing that the vinyl is on... If the vinyl shipped with a sticky side or it would stick together...It's only blue for white vinyl... any other color vinyl the blue paper backing is white... If the backing was white than you can't see the decal so they change it to light blue or else it blends.. If you notice the orange and black vinyl the paper backing is white.... I use a clear transfer paper as it helps to see the regmarks when placing the layers.... There is 3 parts to a decal... The Backing, Vinyl, and Transfer tape...

Yes it is true... Some companies don't want you selling there logo, but there are some that don't mind but either way it is a copyright infringement... This video was just a demonstration video... Nothing in this video was sold or advertised to be sold.... You can make them, use them, show them, give them away free, you just can't sell them...

contact Harley & they will provide you with about a 50 page book on all the copyrights just for their logo it is broken down by each individual. piece of the logo I know a man that sold 1 sticker & lost his website ,house ,shop ,all equipment & about half a million dollars. Prove you did not sell any, what you gonna use to prove you made No sales & used it only for show. I don't download the images...I make them in Photoshop Illustrator.. Great program to create vector images but pricey... You can also use CorelDRAW but Photoshop is my personal preference...

yes... keeps me very busy... have my online store and also sell on eBay and Etsy. Plus my local business doing car/truck doors, Contractor pull trailers, Vans.... Decals are the small part but sell 20-30 decals a day average.....
