I once rented a car to make a transcontinental trip to Grand Canyon, AZ with a visiting professorfrom Japan. I did not know this, but he put a gallon of milk in a jug in the back seat as an emergency food supply. It was August. The milk exploded while we were hiking down the canyon. The stench was unspeakable, but we drove the same car for two days back to the state where we started. I returned the car as if nothing ever happened. Hertz later charged extra $500 on the credit card for cleaning. Yea, we should have returned the car in AZ and made our return trip much more comfortable, but that incident still gives us a good laugh whenever we get together. PS. He retired as the president of one of the largest universities in Japan. Who knew the price of my permanent vacation house in Japan with food/sake and good laughs was $500 :).

Wow. I now know the cost of spilling milk in a rental-car.
