I used to agree, but looking back I disagree. Valarie’s tone is so much more explosive because she has, “such a mastery (Camilla),” over it, While Dia is a lot younger, making it to where he growls and tone are a lot less defined. I will say Dia’s sass made her very enjoyable to watch and her growl and vocal choices accommodated her well, when Dia sang, “I bust the windows out your car,” the second time, she lost a lot of her sassy tone making her a bit less consistent than Valarie. Dia’s lack of experience caused Valarie to surpass her in terms of consistency, making Valarie a better pick for the knockouts because she can pick a song that fully displays every aspect of her voice she wants you to hear. Giving Valarie the upper hand, and causing John to pick her.

she had no versatility or maturity in her voice. she was just screaming and improvising her runs as she did them, and valerie had intention with every run while dia was just repeating her same run, valerie objectively won

Yes I was so surprised. Valerie seemed off especially in the beginning. She changed up the song and Dia was trying to follow her new take on it. Not quite fair. Dia won for me and was the better vocalist. Not just me thinking that but every other judge except John 👎

The best version for me of this song is probably Amber Riley's version from glee. She captured the sassiness and angst of the song.

John have a “bad” reputation when it comes to picking contestants in the Battles, but I personally think he made the right decision on this one. Dia was definitely in character, she brought the sass and sang her heart out with great stage presence. Valarie wasn’t in character as Dia, but from a vocal stand point she was on A-WHOLE-NOTHER level in my opinion. At the end of the day this is a vocal competition called “The Voice” and you guys can’t be mad at that.
