Hope this helps! ... Warm and dry, sugar high (Hyperglycemic) Cold and clammy, need some candy (Hypoglycemic) ... *DKA (type 1)*: The condition develops when your body can't produce enough insulin. Characterized by fruity smell bc the body is burning fat, resulting in ketones and waste building up, dropping the PH of the blood to acidic levels. The body reacts by breathing deeply and heavily which is known as Kussmaul Respirations. Your blood sugar level is consistently higher than 300 milligrams per deciliter Signs and symptoms of DKA include: -altered mental status, -polyuria (excessive peeing) -polydipsia (excessive drinking) -fatigue -nausea -vomiting ... *HHNS (Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketonic Syndrome)*: In diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome, your body tries to rid itself of the excess blood sugar by passing it into your urine. Left untreated, diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome can lead to life-threatening dehydration. Prompt medical care is essential. Signs and symptoms of HHNS include: -Blood sugar level of 600 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) -Excessive thirst -Dry mouth -Increased urination -Warm, dry skin -Fever -Drowsiness -Confusion -Hallucinations -Vision loss -Convulsions -Coma

Why won't administering oral glucose to an already hyperglycemic patient present with any harmful effects?

Most oral glucose tubes contain 15 g of sugar. About as much as a banana. Patient who is already hyperglycemic, is already showing s/s. So you don't want administer oral glucose, but if you accidentally do it's not too harmful.
