There’s always been this grimdark theme in the Diablo series, that those who fight evil will always be eventually consumed by it. It follows an understandable, yet extremely nihilistic train of logic: those who fight evil must first seek out evil, and in doing so expose themselves to the most hideous forms of evil. With every evil act countered and evildoer eliminated, the hero goes on in search of even greater evils, on and on until their minds and bodies are crushed by the pursuit. The heroes are incapable of stopping, as they cannot standby doing nothing while evil exists, so they force themselves onward, becoming more broken and fanatical until they’re spent. It’s thankless, as the common people are more likely to fear them for their extreme fanaticism, and the only thing motivating these heroes is that by ridding the world of evil, they are doing the world a service in the long run. However, since evil is so ever-present, and the noble so few and far-between, lesser acts of evil will always spring up in the heroes’ wake, that will eventually grow and fester into new great evils that plague the land. And thus, nothing will ever truly change as the world exists in a perpetual state of hardships and suffering. It makes sense as the plot of a game, as having the status quo be one of continuous problems can potentially give rise to an unending stream of content to engage in, but severely lacks in-world explanation as to why people would even consider becoming heroes in the first place, or even to continue on as heroes instead of just retire and become a hermit somewhere. Mechanics-wise, each and every player is a hero, but this does not carry over tonally, as the lore goes out of its way to make you feel like you are the only one who gives a damn in a world where everyone else either couldn’t care less or could fall to corruption for something as petty as a single coin. I suppose it’s just a case of ludonarrative dissonance, but it bothers me all the time while playing the newer games in this series, especially 3 and 4.

@ Lore-wise, the oceans of Sanctuary are filled with primitive yet powerful beasts, a Soulstone can quite easily corrupt every sea monster in a massive radius and unleash them all onto land. Mephisto’s influence has already been seen in action corrupting the beasts of nature in Kurast (Diablo 2, Act 3), and that was for beasts that started out as mostly harmless. Imagine a corrupted giant squid or something, I don’t even want to think about fighting that. Edit: supposedly the reason the creatures in Sanctuary’s oceans are so powerful and dangerous is because all of the spilt demon blood eventually finds their way to the oceans, and the sea creatures that feed on this blood becomes demonic the more demon blood they ingest. Since the destruction of the Worldstone, more and more demons have came to Sanctuary and thus more of their blood are spilt upon its earth, which all will eventually find their way to the oceans, making the sea creatures extra dangerous and susceptible to corruption and control by a Lord of Hell.

@ I suppose you’ve got a point. Though that squid probably won’t be the final boss, the boss might end up being something like a sperm whale with a hundred tentacles on its back, walks on massive crab legs, has lobster claws sticking out of its mouth and a spike-encrusted tail that can flatten a city in one swipe. Sounds epic as fuck and would be equally awesome to fight, but to explain that away in lore is probably more than what Blizzard is willing to pay its writers.

It's the same fucking story in every game. Big bad is killed, some dude (or gal) ends up with an evil crystal and a curse. New big bad rises. Rinse and repeat. It's boring.

@@Emanon... it’s a game with a massive budget, of course the publishers will want to take as little risk as possible. Most people aren’t playing the game for the story anyways so why take a risk? Risk taking is for indie games.

@ you can’t truly kill evil. Then again, the fact that the reborn evil is of the exact same personality and carries with it all of its memories as before is… a bit of a stretch. Hell’s got some really cool reincarnation shit going on if demons can just get completely erased from existence yet reform good as new a few fucking decades later.

I haven’t played Diablo 4. After watching videos on youtube (and the fact I have a Mac) I didn’t really care to. After watching this video, I feel like the story and especially the dialog is pretty bad. I also cannot stand Mephisto’s voice in this. In Diablo 2 his voice was chilling and demonic… “like a thousand needles in my heart.” In this game it’s just a regular deep voice - no effects on it, not even evil sounding. His appearance is not even him, either. What a letdown. And after playing all the other Diablo games, I just don’t understand why someone doesn’t take all the soulstones with the demons in them and just drop them in the middle of the ocean? They’ll never be found and everyone will be fine.

They forced us to side with the characters we don't like against the characters we do like. All the characters are infested with modern blizzard writing, goofy and edge-less male characters bossed around by stalward and masculine female characters. It's the same in all their games. All the female characters are good and strong, and if they weren't good they will turn good, while all the male characters are incompitent sidekicks, soft, or villains.
