This rings so true. I had the lumbar laminectomies 9 weeks ago and am greatly improved but still recovering. The surgery instantly made a good difference - it corrected the most terrible nerve pain, but the spondylolisthesis remains and is evident when I “overdo things”. I will try and manage it to avoid fusion. This video gives me hope. What they say about Listen to your body is correct. If I do stupid things like lifting, even tiny things, and like bending, instead of using my grabber stick, my body tells me. I go through days of pain and regret for being overly ambitious. Most of all I like to know there are others out there with this condition. I liked to hear “spondies unite!”.

Apart from problems that make sitting worse, it seems to me that by and large humans evolved doing things on their legs, say farm work, construction work, hunting, traveling by walking, etc, so sitting all day seems pretty abnormal and would diminish venous circulation even for someone without dvt. When I’ve not been active much, I tend to be the one airplane passenger squirming in my seat so I’m probably borderline.

So glad I found you guys! I'm L4 on L5 Grade 1. I've been suffering with this since March 2019 with very little treatment. I went to PT once, my next appt I was late because my husband parked in the wrong place, no wheelchair was available, it took me almost 15 minutes to walk to the other side of the hospital because of excruciating pain. When I finally got there they were very rude, rolled their eyes at me & told me to leave. Long story short, I've had three epidurals, no guidance on exercises, was relatively pain free for six to eight weeks. When the pain became unbearable again I was prescribed 12 Tramadol, that I don't like. When those ran out I was back to Ibuprofen. That's how it's been, period.

Try laying on a cold gel pack from the refrigerator to the lumbar area. That is a relief I use. It will soothe the inflammation while waiting for the Ibuprofen to kick in.

I had grade 2 spondylolisthesis, had a L5-S1 spinal fusion and laminectomy. The pain has really progressed since my surgery. MRI images are practically useless due to flaring which ruins the image. Even CT scans do have some flaring but go easy with imaging that uses ionizing radiation. If you have the surgery when you're young, I was told the adjacent Vertebrae is compensating for the lack of moment. I still take pain medication, have lidocaine injections weekly and lidocaine infusions every 8 weeks. Steroid injections didn't do anything for me. Pretty painful. Obviously not as painful as the surgery but still, really hurts. Being pain-free with 24/7 pain is just a dream for some people.

Robin Albright same and I’ve had it for 13 years. Since I was 6. It’s fucking hell and last year I was in a major accident (I was a passenger) at it made my situation worse. It went from grade 2 to grade 3 but I can’t do surgery because 1) I’m still too young they want me to be at least 25 2) I have other chronic illnesses so surgery is really risky and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary 3) it’s risky period. You can end up paralyzed or completely screwed up. It’s a very risky and a surgery that’s just not worth it unless you have no other choice. But for now I just have to suffer from severe pain and sleepless nights.

Hi, your videos have all helped me in the last 2 years. In Jan 2017 I was diagnosed with Spondy grade 1 and took your advice to work on my core strength doing Pilates and getting stronger. For 2 years I felt fine, no sciatica issues and very strong healthy core. Unfortunately 6 weeks ago I think my spine slipped as I have degenerative Spondy and now have a numb foot and leg and sciatica most days. My physio has said that I need another MRI scan and probably now need medical intervention. So my big question to you please, is, how are your patients in general after the pinning of the L4 and L5, how is the mobility? Can we go back to Pilates, cycling, etc. Thanks

I’m in my mid 40s and have been diagnosed with spondy. I have been having low back pain since my early 20s, first brought on by heavy weight lifting and later exacerbated by competitive tennis. Sadly if I avoid tennis I usually avoid problems, but I love tennis. I have been told by a few different PTs to do McKenzie extensions which initially helped greatly in my early 20s. However as the years went by the flare ups became more frequent. Are extensions contraindicated for spondy? Like I said I had been told by at least 2 different PTs that extensions would help. Oh, I had my scan in 2008 and at the time I was grade 1. Thanks

Whatever you do, do NOT go to a chiropractor to try to solve this problem. They will make it only worse. This is how I started experiencing pains due to my espondilolisthesis (I was assimptomatic before). They will say that their spinal manipulations are risk-free, but it is not true. Better be safe than sorry. Feel free to send me a msg if you want more details.

@@kmdsakmdsa197 Spondy help. Yes! This will be a bit long: three years ago I couldn't walk. During the worst of it I started researching - 'cause I couldn't do anything else - what I could do. Started taking supplements, cleaned up my food choices, and stretched. I spent 3 hours or more every single day just stretching on the floor. I still need a good half hour first thing in the morning and 10 minutes or so throughout the day. On a good day, I can walk about a mile now, at a leisurely pace, before I have to rest and stretch. Basically, if the stretch feels good and right, I hold it until it feels complete. I usually make micro-movements while I hold it according to how it feels. Supplements I take to improve bone/disk health include (but are not limited to) collagen, glucosamine chondroitin, zinc (can make you nauseas if you take too much - I take half of a lower dose), copper, vitamin D3 (50,000 IU, 2x/week) , potassium, magnesium, and vitamin K2 (a type of potassium). Research these things and decide what you need based on your own knowledge of you. It's seriously overwhelming, so just start with what makes sense to you. Every improvement is progress! Every improvement sets you up for future improvements! For pain and anti-inflammatory help: hyaluronic acid (can get it from Bulksupplements.com for a lot cheaper), Mirica PEA, and Curamed (super-concentrated turmeric). Google these things. Especially the hyaluronic acid and PEA. Both are made by the body. HA is the squishy stuff in cartilage and soft tissues - disks between the vertebra. PEA is important for nerve health and repairing damaged nerves. Studies show it's better for pain than Lyrica and without the side effects. My experience backs that up! Please feel free to ask me anything!

Ask your surgeon how it started. You seem young. My first symptoms started at 12 and I waited until I was 24 to have imaging. Isthmic spondylolisthesis is a developmental defect that begins in early years as a small compression fracture (not painful and you probably wouldn't know it) due to hyper extending. It was seen in early humans when we started walking upright. Children in ballet or gymnastics can develop this from a very straight bent backward kind of stance. Knowing what kind of spondylolisthesis can give you more insight on what kind of treatment you need. Don't be afraid of the surgery. Long term pain vs. Acute short term pain is a no brainer to me but be prepared. I watched a surgical video of a spinal fusion the night before my surgery and that help me prepare for what I was about to go through. Don't be scared of pain, it reminds you that you're still alive ;)

I have extreme pain after about 500 steps. The frog position is my saving grace from extreme pain. Cant really do it in public though. When I get to my sedan I hop in back right away and get into the frog

OMG! Thank you!! I've had L5-S1 Grade 2 the last 3-5 years. Mostly recovered apart from siatica. I just tried the frog pose. It's AMAZING!!!!! In less than a minute in relieved some acute pain I've had all day. I appreciate your post & mentioning the position. Hope you're feeling better 🙏💚

I have a method for dealing with the sciatica when sitting or driving. If you have sciatica down your left leg sit with a pillow under your right buttock. I would have terrible pain after only 15 minutes but with the pillow in position I can sit for over 2 hours without a problem. Will do a clip on it.
