The engineering team who designed this set back in '74 likely didn't expect it to last into the 21st century, let alone for 50 years. I distinctly remember back then that the sets with the transistorized chassis were considerably more expensive.

Well, in 1973, our Bradford BW TV, which was bought in 1964 from Grant's 21-inch console, died . My father bought and got a good deal on it. My mother insisted that we replace it with a color TV. So they bought an RCA xl 100 19 inch a great TV. The first thing I remember watching on it was the Watergate hearings in great color. 😂

In 1975 we bought our first color tv, an RCA XL Color 19” portable. It was definitely a hybrid set with about 4 or 5 tubes and the rest was transistorized (my dad and I had to fix it a number of times). I think I still have the SAMS for it on a shelf somewhere. Wasn’t a very good set, not the greatest picture as I recall.

It’s great, keeping these old TV’s 📺 around. Again, they’re the junkier version than tube type ones, but they’re certainly way better than today’s flatscreen TV’s. Even for it being black and white, it will beat any newer color television 📺, 2000 and on. Your friend, Jeff.

I have seen many times, where the makers will discontinue a model shortly after it's debut, due to a design or manufacturing flaw like the one pointed out here. Especially if it's one that renders the product unusable or dangerous.

How about counting the number of turns as you unwind and manually rewinding? Have to thoroughly clean off the corrosive glue first. I have manually rewound transformers. Time consuming, but possible.

Cool! We have 11 and 30 where we live. We receive St.Louis stations. 30 (an independent station like 11) started June 1969, the same month my father bought our first color tv. I wasn't in school until that fall. Those stations are not independent anymore.

It would be neat to get a comparable reel of wire and rewind (even crudely) that deflection yoke to see results. I bet that would be a bigger pain in the butt than arguing at the counter at DMV!
@PeterMichaelPH9 ай бұрын
As a guy that used to repair TV's, I can tell you that a failed yolk is extremely unlikely unless it got wet. Clean the contacts on the vertical hold and vertical size potentiometers. Judging by the age of the set replace the vertical deflection capacitor regardless if it tests good. A failing tube usually shows some signs of vertical deflection and not a flat horizontal line. I'm sorry I don't have a schematic to diagnose further.
@m.k.81589 ай бұрын
The ohmmeter does not lie...an open winding, is a open winding. As for yokes not failing unless they get wet, this WAS generally the case..but the glue used in the construction of those yokes had a long-term issue..the glue became hydroscopic, and adsorbed moisture from the air, this causes the windings to corrode and open. even worse, the glue itself becomes corrosive over time as well (although the adsorbed moisture alone would likely ruin the yoke windings on their own, given enough time).

I didn't know tubes were still being used in tv's this late. I'd have figured '72 was the final year. Guess it was a cost-saving measure.

TVs still had one tube in them as late as the mid-2000s...
@radiotvphononut9 ай бұрын
As far as sets made for the USA market, tubes were basically gone by '75, but GE continued to make the 10" tube PortaColor until at least 1977, and I think there were some cheap-o B&W portables with tubes as recent as the late-'70s.

Since you brought it up, here's a good "bar bet" . Show someone a phonograph record and ask them "how many grooves are on it?" They will carefully count out a few, multiply that by the total area, and give you a number. Correct answer.....ONE... Yes, there is only one groove--it goes around and around in a spiral. But watch out...some people become extremely angry when proven wrong about anything. Good way to win a beer, but watch out for some people! Yes, I know, they do make multi-groove records. That's another subject... @@Zickcermacity

@@radiotvphononut i think the last partial valve/tube set (hybrid) here in the uk was the Thorn 1500 chassis(several brand names) monochrome series , and ITT CVC9 colour series , 1500s were everywhere and anywhere and much used for cheap tv rentals .. i used to have a few of each but no more, had to get rid due to losing use of storage space, as for all valve, probably the Thorn 1400 monochrome, or ITT VC52 chassis monochrome(those still used hard wired chassis, no pcb!) , and for colour, not sure

The infamous glue thing. They plagged Sansui amps and corrosion goes into component legs until it break them. They put glue over the board to stop vibration on big pieces like caps, but they just spill glue everywhere ... and after 30 years you find many pieces compromised, some you can get from Digikey and some others not, liike matched fets and sort of custom transistors you can find anymore. Yes, replacement will work ... but the value of your amp is lowered substantially since it is not longer original.
@exenx29959 ай бұрын
No the glue was not for vibration they didn't care about earthquakes when they built these. Just for educational purposes the glue was applied so the parts would stay on the board during "dip soldering" which is a technique used to create a reliable electrical connection between components and the PCB. The dip soldering machine automates the soldering process, reducing the need for manual labor and increasing the speed of production. Hope this helps..

@radiotvphononut9 ай бұрын
The biggest problem with them is the tuner that is an integral part of the main board, and the bad soldering on the tuner shield ground connections. Otherwise, they were decent sets and they produce a good picture.
@wadehicks92709 ай бұрын
@@radiotvphononutin a lot of cases when those ground connections would break it would take out the non validated EPROM causing a dead set. After changing the Prom you had to go through the setup adjustments which was done by entering a service mode using the buttons on the front of the tv set. I done a few of those back in day. Great video Bryan be safe.

@@radiotvphononut I did get the set. It has a very good picture, just a few typical CRT flaws: the upper part of the picture has some minor convergence separation and the vertical height is a bit too high for my taste, too much top/bottom cropping. I can adjust that down in the service menu.

I don't get it. Even back then, few would watch a 9 inch screen. Most wanted color then and today, better off you pull the tubes and junk it. In those days, the transistor sets produced a much better picture. The heat was less, the voltages better regulated, the if sections much wider bandwidth. The overscan less, sharper picture and so on.
