Cleaned the carb, still dies. Removed the fuel and added new gas, still dies. Checked spark plug and oil, still dies. Loosened the gas cap, ran like a champ. That did it for me.

Hey you just uploaded this video which is kinda cool. I'm always interested in how everyone diagnoses their problems with lawn mowers. I fixed my neighbors Troybilt with the same Briggs n Stratton engine as the one you're showing by just changing the spark plug. The problem he had was his engine would start and die in a matter of seconds. After merely changing the spark plug it started and ran like it should. I retested the start/run throughout the day and it worked just fine after changing the spark plug. Honda mowers are notorious for starting and dying also. The fix is the same in fact that's why I always change the spark plug before ever tearing into the carburetor. There are many many videos addressing start/die scenarios and they always dive into the carburetor which I think is jumping the gun in trying to discover what the real problem is. Your problem is that your mower will run for awhile say over a minute to as long as 5 minutes before it dies. I've not had that problem ever so thanks for putting this video up. I can see how different your problem is compared to the start and almost immediately die scenario that I am more accustomed to. More so you also made available a diagnostic video which usually guys do not do which is more important to me to see how everyone troubleshoots and diagnoses down to the component they think needs repairing. 2 thumbs up thanks for going through the trouble of putting this video up. Your video was short and sweet and right to the point without wasting any more of the viewers time very well thought through and concise. KUDOs!!!

Had the same issue, cleaned carb three times, float was fine, oil level perfect, filter is clean... still same issue. I turned the gas valve half way open and that did the trick. The real fix would be to replace the gas shut off valve.

One thing we tried was loosen the gas cap a bit and the lawn mower started up and kept running. The gas cap vent is the culprit.

Good vid My initial thoughts was Gas cap or coil, carb seat would of been my last thoughts. Typically when the seat goes , that I have seen.,it doesn’t get any fuel and doesn’t even start.

Good video....sounds like the fuel was just trickling past the swollen seat allowing u to mow until you run out of gas....90% of small engine issues are carburetor related for 2 obvious reasons...california legal means the jets have to be so small and of course the ethanol in fuel creates all kinds of problems when it sits.... I always look at the carburetor when there's an issue...of course spray carb cleaner down the intake to see if it's fuel related...but coils and spark plugs just don't come up as often especially in newer mowers....u can save a lot of time by just checking to see if it's fuel related and if it is take the carb apart real quick and examine the float/needle etc....

I have a brand new carburator, new oil, air filter and it still does after a few minutes. I can get it to start right back up but dies again after a few minutes

Thanks for the comment Bob Houseweart for the comment. I believe your fuel cap might be bad. Try cracking the gas cap and try again. If the cap isn't venting properly then the gas will not flow to the carb as fast as its supposed to.

Okay. Next remove the bowl nut while the carb is still in the mower. Clamp the fuel line so you don't loose all your gas. With the bowl gone you can move the float up and down. Push the float up and then release the clamp on the line and then allow the float to drop down. Watch the fuel flow. If it's just dripping then theres a flow problem between the tank and the carb. But if its flowing a lot of fuel then theres another problem. Also check to make sure the float moves freely.

My mower, sometimes when you let it sit for a few days it doesn't prime at all like no pressure just feels like no gas in the tank. Also everytime I turn the mower off I have to prime it 1-3 time and wait 5-10 secs to make it start again

Mine dies out after I start mowing but it starts back up. Could it be the fact that the bag is not on and side door doesnt open and grass ends up clogging underneath?

If you're cutting tall grass then yes. The grass is stopping the engine. Try raising your deck a bit. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it

Mine is doing the same thing, but it’s not the carb. I’ve just replaced the Carb and the coil with brand new ones and it’s still happening. Going to replace the plug here in a bit. Even though it looks good, it could be a thermal issue. After that the only thing left is the Thermostat on the Autochoke.

If the thermostat on the choke were bad it would just run on choke the entire time but it wouldn't shut off. Try leaving the gas cap loose next time. If the cap has failed and not allowing air to enter the tank then it will run out of gas in a few minutes.

if neither the gas cap or the float seal is bad..and you have an OHV motor..your valves will most likely need adjusting

Mine does the same thing minus you have to let it sit for 30minutes before you can start it back up. Also the pull cord is so hard to pull after a stall.

Funny story: my dirt bikes front tire blew out and got it back to my house and after fixing that front tire it wouldn’t start it had everything I took the carb off cleaned it I turned the gas off it took me 3 days to realize that because the shut off switch is behind my front fender

Yeah mine just started doing this today it did it one time yesterday but then it started back up and ran fine for like 2 hrs and today I go to start mowing and it shuts of after a couple minutes its not the gas cap so the only thing it can be is the carburetor right? first I would try replacing the spark plug, just in case the spark isn't making it to the tip of the plug. Next I would check the flywheel key to see if it's sheared.

Yes the autochoke may still be working when you shut it down hot. Next time it does it take the air filter off and see if the brass flap is open or closed. It's supposed to be open since its hot. Whats the model of your mower?

Thanks Brad Barton. It's pretty obvious that there is a carb problem. To make it easy I would just order one online for less than $10. If you want a more diagnostic answer then the engine seems to be running just a bit rich causing the engine to run slow. Blocking the primer bulb is somewhat fixing the problem. Otherwise for a temporary fix ducktape over the hole in the bulb.

My mower likes to stop like this sometimes, and sometimes sounds like an old school hit and miss engine. The jet in the carb is clean and everything though. I did notice when I had it apart however that gas won't flow through the line with the gas cap on, could this be the cause of the problem ?

You are 100% correct. You have to decide on how you want to fix it. Unfortunately even after this fix I still had to replace the carb. At least I tried.

I've run into same problem more than few times even when using ethanol free gas.That's why I keep few carbs around. after doing the basic cleaning or adjustment or gasket replacement.not worth wasting too much time on these things. I have a troy built pony 17.5 briggs. After a few minutes it dies down and if I disengage it almost dies but keeps running then repeats. Clean carb. any ideas
