For anyone interested, Leon Brenner (another acclaimed working analyst whose educational content on KZbin is, like Derek’s, absolutely phenomenal) proposes that autism be given its own clinical structure entirely, which his work delineates. Thanks as always, Derek :)

what about the idea of moving between structures/positions (as in Kleinian thought?) Does Lacan have this?
@raiaan1234 ай бұрын
I’m learning about Lacanian thought through your lectures for the first time. So apologies if this is addressed later on. But where does psychopathy fall within the tripartite structural model? Your point about diagnosis being rendered by patient suffering more so than divergence from the norm may suggest that psychopaths may be abnormal yet not pathologic in that they do not affectively or at least in any conscious guilt ridden way suffer the consequences of their symptoms. Unless we understand the legal repercussions and ostracization to be the suffering in this case…thanks for any input!

Is paranoia not amongst the realm of depression and other symptoms? I can imagine a neurotic paranoia, eg. fearing observation yet constantly questioning it and their own experience of it.
@loona71262 жыл бұрын
The whole Lacanian review no. 10 is dedicated to the topic of Paranoia and what I got from Miller's article from there is that we can talk about 3 types of paranoia. One as an ego of every person (I.e. neurotics), but then there is paranoia as a clinical structure that falls under psychosis and is destinguished from schizophrenia where there is a lack of paranoia, since paranoia in a way requires a structured ego, a differentiation between me and an other. When there is some paranoid behaviour in the schizophrenic I see it as less structured and fixed in a way and is in fact a symptom with an attempt of cure as is quite useful for the schizophrenic to try and localize some meaning. This is how I think about it at least :) Within the world of Lacanian psychoanalasys you have to let go the demand for everything to fit in litlle boxes and keep an open eye (or rather ear) outside of your understanding.

@@loona7126 Thats fair enough, perhaps slightly different terminology would help distinguish them? Paranoiac symptoms vs Paranoid Psychosis?

Do all people fall into one of the three? Or some people a blend?

Is a structure the same as a social bond?
@derekhookonlacan3 жыл бұрын
No. Structure has diagnostic purpose, a social bond or link is about a discourse which makes a relationship to the social or symbolic domain viable. Much like symbolic identification.

There is no differential traumatic neurosis precisely because both hysteric and obsessional neurosis are traumatic structures of neurosis.
@derekhookonlacan4 жыл бұрын
Really nice comment. I tend to agree. My comments where I suggested we could think of traumatic neurosis in a provisional way come from a colleague who works with highly traumatized patients.
