Ok here's my theory : Diddy kong wasn't the culprit and Luigi isn't dead. I know it sounds like a hot take, but hear me out. In the original final part, when Luigi dies, the screen fades to black and it reads "The end" But then you hear the 1-up jingle and it becomes "NOT the end" Interestingly, it plays out differently in this video. You still hear the 1-up jingle at 21:09 but it becomes "THE END ?" This implies that Luigi died but received a 1-UP mushroom. Now, diddy's motives seem pretty clear : he wants his rent. We're led to assume that he's the one who poisoned Luigi because the if the Green Sigma was to die, the life inssurance would give diddy the money. Please note that it's Luigi who assumes that, but diddy doesn't say anything. But if Luigi got a 1-up mushroom, someone ought to have given it to him right ? It can only be diddy as he was the only one in that back alley. He'd still get the money because Luigi still lost a life. Also, Diddy being the killer was straight up brought up by the koopa Hobo "my money's on the monkey" to which Luigi replied that it would be a "cool twist". I think it's a red herring to make us go "yeah they even forshadowed it, it has to be diddy". The only question is why would diddy do that ? Maybe because he doesn't hate Luigi, or maybe it's to insure a constant income from the rent ? Sure, if Luigi dies he gets the insurance money, but it's a single payment, a short term solution, he'll have no one to pay him his rent each month if that happens. Also, how would Diddy kong have gotten his hands on blue shells ? For all we know, he's just a guy renting an appartment, not a crime lord.

The visuals and voice acting are great. The characters feel like themselves even with how they're reinterpreted here. I'm glad the writers weren't afraid to raise the age rating above PG-13 while keeping all the colorful Mario elements. Without the adult elements, this wouldn't be a proper noir, and without the Mario elements, this would functionally be nothing special. They did a great job not going too gritty nor too silly. That said, I'm not sure about the writing. The plot line of the initial case that Peach brought Luigi is never mentioned again, no one but Toad should have known where Luigi was, and everyone who wanted to kill Luigi could've just tried to at the earliest opportunity. Events only played out like they did to hit all the typical beats of a detective noir, and THAT'S ALRIGHT!👏 This video is a pastiche of detective noir, and i can enjoy it as that even if the "mystery" didn't hit for me
