Dial Up Internet Using a VoIP Box!

In this episode we explore something I have detested in past videos, going on dial up internet using our broadband internet with VoIP. While I love the fact that I have a true analog home phone, it must be understood that one day I won’t, in fact no one will, as it simply will not be provided any longer. How will I continue my dial up adventure? That’s where VoIP comes in by simulating the dial up experience. In my first test of this Linksys VoIP box, I surf the web at a whopping speed of 31.2K and use several browsers including Internet Explorer 6.0, Netscape Gold 2.02 and Netscape 4.73.

when i did this with a magic jack as a kid I noticed that the magic jack box was using like 2-5mbps to support my dial up connection. Talk about inefficient, lol. It works though there are free dial up numbers.

Nice! My friend has a magic jack I would dial into with my home phone using long distance. 7 cents a minute. Connection would never hold for very long though.

I wanna do this to allow dial in over VoIP to my BBS… I have the same ATA as you, did you have to use G711?

@@dialupchronicles please do! a couple years ago I messed around with two modems trying to communicate through Asterisk and it was really hit and miss

it's actually crazy that I've actually starting to get the need for a fax modem. my PC is from the skylake era so it has 2 PCi slots. I ordered a USRobotics 56k modem. I could've gotten a serial modem and plugged it into a COM port (my pc has one of those too) but I figure it'd be a lot easier if I got something that's known to work. I ended up getting the last one on amazon for a whopping $16. I'll update this comment when I get it to see if it's fit for purpose, on my main machine for windows 11

I have a magic jack which is about $2 a month but you get the first year for free with the purchase of the jack. you can run it directly of your PC or use an ethernet cable. I want to see if I can sign up for juno and see if I could do it the roundabout way

have you heard about Txt-Net Browser on android? basically it's a modern form of dial up using texting instead of calling to send data to an android phone

I had a look at juno and netzero and it looks like they both took down the free dialup plans they had going. Is there still a way to get it or do I have to find another service? If so is there any other free dialup provider

Are dial-up connections still available in the US? There hasn't been a narrowband connection in Germany for years. The analogue and digital ISDN telephone network is being dismantled and replaced by DSL. All landline telephone operations run via voice over IP.

Yes there are still true dial up connections available albeit it can be hard to obtain a true landline phone

@@dialupchronicles If coper will replaced with fibre cables, there is practically no length limitations for single connection lines. But it is expensive to lay one single line from the next distribution box to farm in the middle of nowhere.
