Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

always exciting to have a new piece of equipment, especially something you didn't own before like this spreader!

That spreader is going to save you a lot of money. Another bonus is that you will know it is done correctly.

It's always interesting to see how soil varies in a field and between different states. Here in MN, my fields have the exact opposite problem with too much natural calcium that ties up nutrients.

Great video Nathan. When you loaded the spreader after calobrating it, in the background there's a house with some sort of a mast type thing with antenna's on it. Question:: is that a family members house and do you know what the antenna's are for????....by the way i like the new spreader but you could probably set it up to go a lot faster when you get used to it....keep the videos coming....cheers

You're gonna wonder why you didn't get one sooner. We had trouble calibrating because of the hyd oil temperature and JD flow control. Our trick was to put a tachometer on a spinner and adjust the hydraulic flow on the tractor. If you know the RPM, you know the correct pattern. That would also give a heads up on blockage or empty because the spinners would speed up. Good call on the scales. Gotta know how much is going in the buggy. Make sure you mark you settings between lime and fert.

This one doesn't use tractor hydraulics at all. Self contai ed PTO hydraulic pump.

Was thinking Nathan, until you get another camera for the spreader, maybe take the camera off the grain cart? When you put the extensions on you'll probably only be able to see the top of the pile? Just a thought.

But were using the grain cart and spreader at the same time. I could take one off the planter

Personally I am amazed that it will spread lime in 60ft bout widths with a fine grind as you are likely to find, to my mind, the finest particles will not be thrown as wide as the larger (heavier) particles. This would seem to be highlighted by the apparent width of the dust cloud compared to your driven bout widths and your observations when looking at the pan collections. The wind interference with wide spread widths is always a concern. To some extent the development of granulated lime has addressed these issues although the material has a higher cost per ton. (Blended fertilizers also have similar spreading issues due to the variation of particle size in a sample.)

When your dad painted that cone tank black what kind of paint did he use? And how did he apply it?

Is there a way to link your cell phone to the display so you can tell how many pounds of material you have loaded while sitting on the backhoe?

You have a major camera issue, they say a camera adds 10 pounds it seems yours is adding well over 100! Let's be honest here , if you, me ,or a large majority of those whe sub to this channel ever see 60 lbs again we probably should seek medical attention immediately 😅⁹😅 For some reason my wife isn't speaking to me now, seems she doesn't think she needs a new spreader as much as I did
