Dialogue EQ Explained

Properly equalizing dialogue is crucial to making a good mix. In this video I will talk through and demonstrate how I approach EQ for dialogue in my projects.

A nice, clear explanation of how to create a starting place for setting an EQ for voice, however… as others have mentioned here, it would’ve been much more meaningful to actually hear a sample voice recording with and without your settings as well as when you were sweeping the frequency node around.

Thank you for the clear explanation Tom. In various media including radio, I've noticed that for the 'main' speaker they are sometimes applying a HPF at around 120kHz. It's an interesting way to make the main speaker stand out from the other speakers. A little test that I use is to simply turn up the volume when listening. If it is uncomfortable to listen to then I usually use a low shelf like you demonstrated to adjust. By the way, I'm an enthusiast, not a pro.

I have a question. I want to restore the vocals to some of the songs in Wario Land 4. Mainly the ending song. They are old, compressed, and crushed for the System. The original recordings are behind Nintendos closed doors. I've tried many ways, including.. Gulp.. Ai... But nothing really works. How would you go about restoring 8bit/16bit compressed audio / vocals?

No. But if the VO is very well recorded I might allow for a bit more low end.

@@colindayo Yes, if you feel like the VO sounds better. So maybe like 65hz.

It mostly stays the same, except that with VO I try to see if a little more bass helps, but it doesn't always.
