Sheen is very different from shimmer, it’s not separate from the ink itself. It is achieved by the high concentration of dye, that’s why there is not that many combinations of ink and shimmer colors: blues are mostly sheening pink, violets give green or yellow sheen. Two ways to reduce sheen are to use more absorbant paper or dilute it a bit with water to lower the dye concentration

As a fan of sheen, the purpose is mostly to add character. Often there's usually a bunch of inks in the "base color" so sheen adds dimension and novelty when I write. Some inks sheen heavy, while some don't. It also depends on the paper quality (lamy dark lilac is a heavy sheener on most stuff but on my kind of shitty work notebook you can only see it in like heavy lines and barely even then). You can usually reduce them by using a fine/ef nib on the dryer side as sheen depends on pooling and looking into paper that doesn't usually show sheening. TR is one of those one's that's going to show off sheen particularly strongly, even in inks that aren't heavy sheeners (my writer's blood sheen on TR sheens and a lot of places don't even REPORT that it sheens most of the time) so using other papers will probably suit you well. They also likely show more of the sheen because of the method by which you're swatching (even my mild sheeners tend to show in a dip pen) As for issues? Nah. Maybe some ultra sheeners might crud the nib a little or stain but I've never really had issues with cleaning them out. The biggest issue is sheening inks tend to have a long dry time so they smear a lot, especially on TR. Also no they're not particles like shimmer so you're not gonna really be able to avoid them.

The video I didn’t know I needed tonight 😅 At first I was totally underwhelmed with the range of colors too, but as you showed more swatches and when you grouped them by property, they really grew on me. All the shimmers look amazing (especially the greens!), and those four muted standard inks you had with each other on the left look so good together. I’m looking forward to seeing more people swatch these to get a better idea of how they look in different lights and on different papers!

Thank you so much for this video. I have the last two years calendars and was on the fence about buying another. This calendar just doesn't have enough of a variety of colors, so you have just saved me a lot of money. I love Salted Caramel, Winterberry, Lullaby and Pine Needle. Forest Gateau, Fruit Cocktail, Cosmic Glow and Good Tidings are maybes, but the rest are just OK.

To answer your question, if you don't mix up your bottle it will settle to the bottom, so I've been able to get a draw in a syringe without much sheen. If you don't want your nib to get clogged, store your pens nib up, otherwise the ink settles on the nib and feed. I prefer medium or broads for shimmer, but I've never had shimmer ruin a pen or render it totally unusable. Your mileage may vary, but I don't think its really anything to worry about.

I love how silky and viscous sheening inks feel to write with. Maybe a little unglamorous but it’s like the feeling of drinking plain water versus Gatorade. Both are good, but feel noticeably different.

@@Wholelatteplans nutmeg ended up being a bit lighter than I expected. I have it my Platinum 3776 with a medium nib. I love Chilly Night, it’s in my Opus 88 mini with a medium nib. There is a lot of shimmer so I doubt I’ll put in a pen with a Fine Nib. I love Good tidings. It’s in a fine nib so very little sheen but it looks like a great black green color!

Thank you so much for the video. I like the swatches so I can see what I am getting. You speak of mixing your inks to get an ink you like better. I am trying to research ink mixing but I am having trouble finding information on it. Do you have anything on your process? Types of inks to mix? Combinations to stay away from? Etc.

Awesome video . However, all the rambling against sheening and shimmering inks I take exception with. I love them and have never had any problems using them in any pen. I have had the worst time with Anderillium Flapjack Octopus that is a plain orange ink and a nightmare to use.

Is there somewhere I can email or DM you information? I have lots of sheening inks, including monster sheening ink. There is a way to reduce sheen. You need to water down the ink to avoid the sheen. If I wanted to not get sheen in an ink, I would add BPC dilution solution, because that can water down an ink without making it more dry. That will make the ink last longer without having to mix colors. I have the atomink inks and dilution solution, so that is easy for me to use. If you don’t have it maybe add some water and see if it needs a touch of white lightening. I love sheen, so I just use it in my pens as is. I have not had any problems with the sheening inks from Diamine; in fact I use Polar Glow all December.

Lovely collection, I don't know much about these special edition ink sets. This is the first one I've seen and it looks like most of the colors are based on a blackish gray color with tent of blue and , and yes I agree to shimmers are quite strong, though I believe they are best used with a glass dip pen I would never put anything like that in a fountain pen thank you for sharing

That is called a "Dominant Industry Ink Muddler Glass Dip Pen" and PenChalet has them for $12 each. It's a little spoon-ish "blurp" on one end and a glass dip nib on the other. (I just ordered one a few days ago myself, lol - hoping it will get here today!) EDIT - I'm further into the video now and just noticed that hers doesn't have the dip pen on the other end, it's just the muddler, so it's not the same exact one I pointed out, but it's close. :)

Thank you for putting this out there. I will be leaving the sheen & shimmer in the bottom of the bottles. I prefer to use EF & F so it won't show up & I don't want to risk clogging up anything in the pens. I am not disappointed in the offering at all. Love the colors...save that lemon/lime. Ugh. Don't see a use for that. Despite not being a bells & whistles kind of gal, I am not unhappy & look forward to playing w these.

So sheen isnt a separate particle, like the silica glitter in shimmer ink. Sheen is basically chemical reactions happening, either air-to-ink or ink-to paper. Its more similar to shading because its somewhat dependent on the amount of ink you put down, and on the paper used. Silica shimmer will look the same on most paper because its literally glitter on the page, its not dependent on any chemical reaction taking place. Honestly sheening inks dont need a y special maintenance unless youre using Nitrogen. With that specific ink, i wouldnt keep it in a pen for more than a week or two.

Thank you for this spoiler! I was debating getting this this year. And I am thinking I am gonna pass. I'll probably get 1 or 2 when they come out with the full sized bottles. Also for Sheening I have found with a more absorbent paper I get less sheen and also with drier pens or smaller nib sizes. Any thing that puts down less ink, the less sheen is left on the paper. It happens when ink pools. 💜

I use a notebook that’s not considered “fountain pen friendly” necessarily, but the ink won’t bleed through, and I don’t get any sheening. I only do what I think is called long form journaling, and I started with a $1.00 lined notebook from Walmart. I have found that the Kokuyo Campus A paper (apparently different from B paper?) doesn’t show the sheen either.

Thanks for this spoiler video. I'm loving these moody tones this year. I also LOVE sheening inks! Sheen is a result of the ink's heavy saturation of color. So, no need to agitate like shimmer inks because there are no particles to sink to the bottom. How long you can leave a sheening ink in a pen without use depends on the specific ink and the pen. I've had some dry out over night, and others go for weeks. What's universal is that they all take a bit of extra effort to clean. I like the contrast of the base color with sheen peaking through. So, if an ink is too sheeny such that I can't see the base color, I'll dilute the ink with a drop or two of water. 🙂

@@Wholelatteplans a drop or two of water (sometimes more) in the converter is how I've done it. Water will make the ink a touch dryer, but I've found most sheening inks to be lubricated enough to handle it and still flow on the wetter side. If it does veer into being too dry, you can add a microscopic dot of dish soap to the converter to fix it--a trick I use for any ink that's to dry for my preference. Birmingham Pen Co. sells a solution to dilute ink, but I haven't tried it because water has worked so well for me.

Sheening inks. I love them. No need to shake up or agitate pen. Sometimes is harder to clean from some pens, but that's no big deal in cartridge /converter pens. Use bulb syringe. Some take a long time to dry, but that doesn't bother me, even though I'm a leftie. (As an underwriter, I avoid smudging..) Focus on the final color. That's the real color. It's the color it's supposed to be. Its magic! Color change before your eyes. I love it. I love how the color can change with the angle of light. Is it blue or red? Or both?

@@Wholelatteplans Use a pen that's easy to clean. he paper can (and does) make a big difference with these inks. Previous invents had some real sheeners, sometimes with shimmer too. Arctic Blast comes to mind. Blue/Red with shimmer. Great for Christmas cards or seasonal letters.

I am super salty that Forest Gateau is a scented ink. The color is stunning, but I abhor scented inks. With so many complaining about them, I'm surprised Diamine hasn't either reduced the number or stopped them entirely.

Yay!!! I’m glad you got your calendar. I felt the same about several of the inks. Your grotto and good tidings sheened more than mine did. I am not the biggest fan of sheen (as you saw in my video) hehe. Also the two scented.. I really liked the Forest Gateau and hoping it doesn’t feather in a fine nib but the fruit cocktail was rough. I will use that and Lemon & Lime for mixing. I’m glad you found some that you liked once you swatched them yourself. I already have several on my December currently inked list 😊. I love your little spoon too.

I have mixed A very high sheen ink with another standard ink and the sheen was gone. So that was either a fluke or it works 😁. I am disappointed in cranberry. I was loving it as I swatched but then the neon green sheen..😡 I’d like to see some of them without shimmer. Maybe I’ll try some that way
