The reason the Flyers front office came out in full force wasn't only to "sell" the Fans on the trade, but it was also to be transparent with what was going on with the trade, something that was sorely lacking in the previous regime. In an ideal world, yes, Gauthier would still be part of the Flyers org. but getting Drysdale and 2nd round pick for a guy that didn't want to be there is much better than just holding onto his rights and losing him for nothing (except an eventual compensatory 2nd rounder i suppose).

@@RJM12345 So, when it comes to college players they have shielded access from their college's athletics department. The NCAA has a bug up their ass about under the table deals so everything has to go through the college and by their rules, which makes it harder for teams to keep in super regular contact with players in college except via their advisors (they also cant have agents formally but they can have advisors). Additionally its not uncommon for national teams to isolate players from teams during the WJC, hockey canada in particular is noted for this but the US team does as well. This, along with an advisor and family who are in line with Cutter's wishes, makes it pretty easy to not end up back at the table after that zoom call. Cutter felt he had made his position clear, the Flyers clearly thought they could still negotiate.

The conversation with Marner is more of an amalgamation of his time in Toronto and especially in the playoffs. Other players have struggled but not to his degree. When Matthews isn't going well, he isn't scoring but he still looks mostly the same. When Marner isn't going well in the playoffs, he just completely loses it and gets intimidated. Every fan sees it and we know for sure the other teams see it specifically Florida and Montreal. He just looked so scared of taking any contact he would just dish out a pass as quickly as he could to avoid getting hit. Bennett and Tkachuck were feasting on him. Last year on that California Road Trip at the start of the year in Anaheim, he got benched and called out by Keefe for throwing a hissy fit down the tunnel for 2 brutal turnovers that ended up in the back of the net. And the VERY next day Keefe had to walk it back. Willy used to constantly get benched and called out by Keefe for his lack of effort. And he just sucked it up and took it and it was never a big deal (because he deserved it with some of those boneheaded plays). It seems that every time it is Marner that is getting disciplined, there is always a caveat and he never gets the same treatment for poor play as Willy does. The contract negotiation also adds fuel to the fire as no one ever thought he was ever worth that cap hit as an RFA; and he still hasn't ever lived up to that cap hit once. Nylander once again got some heat for the original contract, but in the last 2 years for sure, that deal was a bargain and one of the best values in the league (7 mil for potentially 120 points? How do you not love that?) Plus his Dad and eventually what came out with the Columbus Blue Jackets offer sheet; it always felt like there was a sense of entitlement. Once you guys brought it up, I had to sit back and ask myself why I could never embrace Marner as much as Willy, Auston, and even JT. And I feel like most Leaf Fans I talk to in person more or less feel the same way about him. We all know Marner is a really good player, but a lot of people just don't seem to love him the same way as these other players; and looking back logically I think there are a ton of concrete reasons for it.

Bertuzzi could go the rest of the year without another point and I would still want him on that line. Bulldog goes into the corner, almost always gets the puck, bumps the puck back to the blueline, to the other wing, then Center scores. I will take that guy not getting points on the line for forever and pay him a ton to play how he plays. He gets the puck back.

49:17 Steve and Adam are right on Gauthier (potentially) burning a year on his ELC; Matty Beniers burned one on his first game with the Kraken when he got into the last nine games of the season. I assume it's a college thing, since playing your first NHL game makes you ineligible to go back to college hockey, as opposed to guys in the CHL, who can just be sent back to their junior team and have their ELC slide a year if they play fewer than 10 games (which is what we did with Shane Wright). OTOH, a college player who then doesn't make the team can be sent immediately to the AHL, which you can't do with a CHL player unless their season is already concluded.

As for Marner, i don't think the Internet hates him? I know i don't. I've defended him on numerous things. This i think is more so him dissapearing in the playoffs and could his cap hit be used more efficiently. Im none too thrilled at how bodied he gets in the playoffs and how ineffective he becomes when it matters most. Yes i know 14 pts in 11 games, but 9 of them came in the first two lightning games. 2 more came in 4 games with the lightning, then another 3 in 5 games against florida. Yes, there is no way you will get fair value in trading him, but what about resetting the cupboards a bit? Maybe someone would be willing to part with a halfway decent defenseman if Marner is involved in a trade. Could marners cap be better spent in other areas in the roster? This cutter gauthier thing could very well be him wanting to go to puttsburgh and play there.... time will tell as to whether this trade has shades of lindros or shades adam fox. If its shades of lindros its about him not wanting to play for philly and will play anywheere else. If its shades of Fox its because he wants to go to pittsburgh and will refuse to sign with anaheim

2 things regarding the Marner piece: 1. As a Pens fan who semi-follows the Leafs, it seems like the fanbase hates Marner. It feels like everywhere I turn on Twitter, some Toronto fan is calling him a bum or demanding he leaves town, which brings be to... 2. Am I the only person who remembers that Marner has a full no-move? Without his permission, you cannot trade him at all. As a result, why has the conversation around him solely become what y'all can get in a trade for him? The way I see it, Toronto has 2 realistic options, either re-sign him, or let him walk as a UFA.
@collynbertin3260
@collynbertin3260 10 ай бұрын
@jamescoleman7858 your first point is very valid I see it all the time by leafs fans aswell. As for the second point mwrner having no trade or move just means he gets a choice in what team he goes to. If I personally had a no trade clause it would be to protect myself against management doing management things. If the fans and the rest of the people in the lockerroom don't want me anymore then at least I can go where I want to go There are plenty of players that teams and fans love that get moved out all the time to make room. Yes marner wouldn't fetch full value by any means as the leverage isn't there. If you can get a list of ten teams together that would trade for marner and marner pucks three of them that he would go to well now there's a budding war and you can recouperate so of the lost value

He also kept the '5 minute miracle' game 7 alive after the Sharks took a 4 to 3 lead. Martin Jones was let go because of the 'Erik Karlsson curse'. Once Karlsson arrived, the amount of 1 on 1's and '2 on 1's he had to face TRIPLED. A MAN CAN ONLY TAKE SO MUCH! Although other jurisdictions have a "jock tax", it is simply taxing athletes at the standard income tax rate as other workers in the jurisdiction. So if there is a 1% income tax (as in Pittsburgh), athletes are subject to that for games played in that city. The issue is that Pittsburgh also has a 2% schools tax paid by residents so the city tried to impose a 3% fee on athletes saying that is is simply equalizing the tax but the court did not agree.

A lot of teams have reservations about drafting players from the US College system, because those players are often out of their control in terms of signing and development. The only way you get to mostly guarantee a signing is burning off a year from the entry contract with a late season signing, which can mess up your franchise with regard to the salary cap, but it's kind of expected by top US College prospects.

As a Swede I can say that garlic bear is not a thing and Steve mentioning it was the first time I heard of its existence. Someone in Stockholm made a garlic IPA probably and thats about it.

Jamie drysedale on a team that can move the puck will change your opinion on him I promise. I honestly think this is a fair move in both camps eyes. Flyers get a puck moving D who is like 21 and a prime 2nd round pick for a guy who may or may not have an issue with not getting his way…

Such a good point about the current Leafs team. As a die-hard fan I do wish they'd get further in the playoffs, but lets face it the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win in any sport. I have spent the last few years just enjoying how well this team has played during the regular season.

Assuming the Cutters decisions were entirely based on money is so wildly irresponsible to me. You guys have no idea what was said to him by the team or anyone else for that matter and jumping immediately to “well this is going to cost him money on his future contracts” is so silly. Come on guys, be better. Stick to reporting the facts and stop speculating.

Lets make an award for whoever has plus minus too while we are crying about things. How about award for assists, best DFD too. Jesse got so hot for no reason, love how Jesse just brings the old trophy up now where as he HAD 10+ years to do so. YIKES. Funny how it doesnt matter when anyone else leads the league in SV% but as soon as a leaf does he goes crazy. Hmm interesting tactics

I saw all of the players on your Maple Leafs list. The only one i dont have a clear memory of is Teeder Kennedy. Since the convict Ballard era until the core four era, there was a lot of pain. The current management has tried to screw this team up by ignoring the need for defense. Lack of quality defense is still a concern. They need a #1 stud blueliner.

Want to talk about good branding, Bud Light sponsored the Plus/Minus Award from 1996-2008. Hey Adam, bet you'll LOVE this - guess which revolutionary player won it in 2003-2004? Thats right, in between the legs and living rent-free in every NHL goal highlight pack - MAREK MALIK!! He might have shared it with Martin St. Louis but you throw a little shade at Malik and he's basically an award winner

Hey a Swede here 😂 never heard of Garlic Beer,and I've spend my fair time at the bar haha. Sweden is actually quite famous for bad beer, even though we have our micro brewery beer that taste good, swedes have a very low standard when it comes to choose beer

I mean yeah, you could feel bad for Jamie Drysdale. However, he is going to what is currently a better team, vastly closer to his hometown, where he will pay a lower tax rate.

If we are naming or renaming a goaltender award to update for the times, and want a cool goalie name… may I suggest the Dominator Award? Hasek was a decent goalie and for a goalie, maybe the Dominator award would sound pretty cool I think….or maybe the Jonesy award :)

Steve’s right. We don’t know how good we have it. Because it’s always Cup or nothing. Which we all want, but sometimes you need to be thankful for (potentially with this group) a decade plus of playoff appearances. Ideally you win like a Detroit or Tampa or Chicago during your reign. But you could also fail like a Philly or a San Jose or a Nashville in recent years.

I agree with not giving Sammy enough time off from the NHL. Could they be sending Hildeby back down to give him some playing time and then they will call him up again late on Saturday to make his first start on Sunday?. Thoughts?
