Have you already found a diamond and want free professional advice. Send me a message. I can help you evaluate your diamond or help you narrow down the best buy.
1. Set a budget:
The first rule of this Diamond Buying Guide. Let's get rid of the old rule of 2 months of salary. No rule applies to everyone and their situation. This is a symbol of love and commitment not going above your means. With that said, its important to know the expectations of your significant other. Do they prefer dainty like this classic .96 engagement ring solitaire ring? Or do they like more flair and dazzle like this 1.54 carat on a stunning Cambridge Halo Platinum Ring? But learning you can adjust your search with small changes. As a start get a baseline. For example, you know you want a 1 carat diamond engagement ring so start there.
2. Pick a shape
The beginning of your search must be the diamond shape. Each diamond shape has different search criteria such as clarity, symmetry and color that works best. Each shape has a different cost so searching multiple shapes at the same time will leave you frustrated. For example, Take a look at this 1 carat SI 1 clarity H color Princess cut diamond for $3,340 vs this Round 1 carat SI1 clarity H color Diamond for $4,610. Each shape has there pros and cons. Feel free to dive deeper in my Diamond Shapes Article for advice per specific shape.
Round is the most popular. If they aren't leaving hints of their favorite shape, take a look at their Pinterest or maybe ask a best friend to be sure you pick the diamond shape of their dreams.
3. Learn the 4 C's and Narrow your search: diamond buying advice
Once you have chosen the shape, its time to understand how the 4 C's (Carat, Clarity, Color, and Cut) interact with it. The 4 C's represent the most important definitive characteristics of a diamond. I always recommend starting with your goal in carat weight. So when you go to search a site like James Allen, you can specify only choose to see 1-carat diamonds. See below a sample of what the search sliders look like.
4. Choosing your engagement ring:
What I love about the different engagement ring options is it can help with the visual tremendously. Let's say you were shy with reaching a certain carat goal. A ring choice like a Halo, Vintage style, or 3 Stone ring will give it the extra size to appear much larger. So a .80 carat diamond on a beautiful Halo diamond engagement ring setting can be a stunner.
Diamond Buying Guide on how to buy diamonds online.- Again personal engagement ring preference of your significant other is important. If you are unable to find any information, you can always go by what's popular. Click on this link or banner to see an article from Blue Nile on their Top 20 Engagement Ring Styles. This will give you an understanding of what engagement rings are popular. You can also go to recently purchased rings from clients, filter the shape, price and style to see what others are doing and get inspired. Click here to see some recent clients' rings. Online allows a 20x zoom view to critically evaluate the stone. 1 one carat excellent cut online is the same size as the 1 carat in the store. With some knowledge, you can confidently buy online as it provides more options to shift through and better price points.

@OsirisDiamonds
@OsirisDiamonds 4 жыл бұрын
Zacharie B thanks for reaching out. Many companies have their top tier cut line. In the world of diamonds the more you can prove you have something valuable the price goes up. Typically there are special test like GemX and AGS that scientifically prove the cut is excellent. Whether you think having a 5% better brilliance is worth the upgrade comes down to personal preference. If you know how to look you could still find it Diamond just as good without the massive premium. But yes the top tier cuts with a proven cert will have a higher price point. With that said there are stones out there that never went through the extra test that are incredible. When you’re ready to buy reach out to me and I’ll see what I can find

I recently bought a diamond engagement ring online and am so thankful I came across your video before buying. Everything you mentioned is honest and super helpful, and truly looking out for all of us clueless diamond buyers lol I must admit, I was a bit skeptical of the H-I color range because the tint is easily noticeable in the fully zoomed in view online, but I ended up getting an I color round diamond and I don't even see any of the tinting in person! Diamonds are a scam. Especially when they try to sell you "chocolate" diamonds. This stuff is used in industrial tools for cutting and such. You are being suckered into buying baubles at ridiculous prices for zero reason except vanity. Soon you will realize this fluff means nothing. People that believe the lie advertising has sold them about paying three months salary for one are duped.

My biggest concern with buying online is the warranties. Then maintain the servicing of ring to maintain warranty. Verses, have a store to go to each year. We are shopping for my ring. Your advice and views?
@OsirisDiamonds
@OsirisDiamonds 5 жыл бұрын
Elaine Karl hello and thank you for reaching out. Warranties for me don’t mean too much in the sense of gold is gold and diamonds are unscratchable. Not much can happen except a small diamond falling out. We are conditioned to think of warranties because of cars and electronics. Local stores force you to go every year to “tighten polish maintain” your purchase. If you slip they “void” a warranty. Every couple I know will say they never go back. Life gets busy. And frankly everyone I have serviced and know haven’t had issues with diamonds falling. Truth is it’s something you can’t warranty for life. If your ring gets caught in a sweater one day or you drop it hard. If something pops out 8 years later chances are a very small fee to replace it may happen. This is common. Which can happen to anyone depending their lifestyle. In the off chance something happens in a years time, an reputable company will fix. $30-45 dollars to replace a stone in a very rare chance doesn’t bother me. I think it’s better to save 1,000-$2,000 off your purchase with a better quality diamond. If you need my help. Please email me at infodiamondcity@gmail.com I will help you find your perfect diamond within your budget. Thanks for your time hope this helped.

Is it worth buying from an established brand like Tiffany?
@OsirisDiamonds
@OsirisDiamonds 5 жыл бұрын
Tiffany has beautiful inventory that you can buy anywhere else if you have knowledge for a third of the cost. You buy Tiffany for the name. I think when money isnt an issue, the service and experience is top notch. If you are in the middle class, you can buy a beautiful 6,000 ring instead of 18,000 at Tiffany. I personally wouldn't advise buying there.

Thank you so much for this insightful tutorial. What I find daunting is after this point. When multitudes of stones come up that are nearly the exact same price & size, how does one navigate figuring out which one of these is best? They all look sparkly so is there even a way to know based on the information James Allen provides which is the better choice?
@OsirisDiamonds
@OsirisDiamonds 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathleen, thanks for appreciating what I do. I understand your frustration. There are lots of helpful clues to look for. Table percentages- depth percentages, culets, fluorescence, length to width ratios. You want to avoid stones that are bottom-heavy causing to have a smaller diameter. For example, an out of shape 1 carat can appear the same diameter from top view as a perfect cut .90. Causing you to overpay for your one carat that looks just like a .90. On my site, I have a link where I pre-select ideal variables for you- www.diamondcityonline.com/james-allen-website-tutorial-review/ Also feel free to email me and I will help you when you are ready to purchase. Hope this helps.

How do u know what carat size to get if it’s online and u can’t see it on your finger
@OsirisDiamonds
@OsirisDiamonds Жыл бұрын
Truth is people buy based on budget. If you can afford 5,000 then you will aim for a carat diamond. If your budget is 20,000 you will aim for a 2 carat plus. People always try to maximize carat for budget. So though its nice to see the diamond live, it wont change the fact that you will buy what you can afford. Online has better pricing and variety which means larger diamond with a better cut for you in the end.

I do have 2-3 queries 1. Fluorescence: I read that for lower color grade diamonds going for strong fluorescence is advisable, what it your take in this. If this statement is true then shall I not prefer diamonds (J/K) with no or low fluorescence? 2. What is the significance of table %age and depth %age, how does it impact look and size of the stone? what range shall I be looking for and What is a good combination for table - depth %age
@OsirisDiamonds
@OsirisDiamonds 4 жыл бұрын
@@vikaskumarsinha1127 my email is infodiamondcity@gmail.com Yes Flourscense is great for K and J color stones, it helps it appear whiter as blue cancels out yellow. This is particularly helpful for mounting on white gold. Since you are mounting on yellow gold, its not needed. You will see a premium for fluorescense in the lower colors. Here is a link to my site - www.diamondcityonline.com/james-allen-website-tutorial-review/ There is a tab that takes you to a pre selected settings for ideal cut. Click on the balanced diamond tab. Table and depth percentage influences the cut of the diamond(light performance). A stone to bottom heavy will have a small look from the top angle and will affect light.

The biggest thing you did not mention is what lab its certified from. ALWAYS buy a GIA certified diamond. AGS and IGI have lower standards. Most jewelers frown upon these diamonds. GIA will always be more money but it will always be worth more money.
@OsirisDiamonds
@OsirisDiamonds 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. I will be creating a separate video on certifications. In my site, I always leave out IGI so you are correct on that. However, AGS is actually a premium cert. They have a scientific test on cut performance unlike GIA. So when a dealer has a premium cut, they sent to AGS in hopes to score ideal which then gives them the right to price higher. AGS also gives fancy cuts a cut grade scientifically while GIA does not. GIA is the gold standard no doubt, but AGS is no slouch and is in fact considered premium.

I totally understand your hesitation. The companies I suggest on my site and videos have been doing this for decades and sell thousands of diamonds a month. They have a solid reputation. I have bought and returned with my own money to show my viewers the buying experience. They only sell GIA certified and non-enhanced diamonds. People on eBay sell "enhanced" diamonds. Those are the online sellers you want to stay away from. Please email me at infodiamondcity@gmail.com and I will help guide you to find a beautiful diamond from an honest company.

@j You have a great point. Unfortunately, we are caught in this web of lies and live in a world of expectations. In this situation, I say know your significant other and cater to them. Some girls love black diamonds or moissanite. Others would be upset. SO do whatever makes your lady happy you feel me J?!

I really want to know what you think about brilliant earth. I was checking out James Allen and loved the engagement ring I customized which has A color of d and if, but I want a wedding band that has diamonds in it only range from colors from G to h and the vs2-sI1 I feel like I don’t like how that would look next to my engagement ring. But I would love a diamond band instead of a plain band next to my engagement ring. I just wish I could customize my band as well and pick a higher rating diamonds so that it isn’t like flawless, looking engagement ring next to the small yellow looking diamond band.

Well I disagree with a couple of comments given throughout. First of all the 4 C's as you said are important. A 10X loop and natural lighting is important and that is often hard to pick up online due to variables of different PC screens. So you basically have to trust the seller. Now I personally do NOT purchase any diamonds outside of a GIA cert except for two stones. 1 being a 2.6 carat diamond the other being a 2.82 carat emerald . I also like to know the region ( avoiding conflict diamonds as much as possible) . I also want to say what country you order the diamond through is also important. Now India is a huge area where iui t pays to have as much knowledge as possible. First of all Imdia doesn't necessarily mean bad diamond or misrepresented diamond all the time. But be aware that you can buy a diamond with a fake cert. I try to stay within the U.S. when sourcing a stone. A dealers reputation is also important. Now here is where I deeply disagree. Lab grown/created diamonds. I first of all have to admit I do not know all the ins and outs of lab diamonds. How they test them, where they are sourced .. It is another reason I prefer GIA so I have more facts available to me. SSGS , SGL I have purchased diamonds as well as color gems with these certificates. Not trying to suck up but with GIA cert stones I do not feel the need to pull out a 10X loop. I have a lot of trust when it comes to GIA and laser engraved/inscription. For me they will always be the clear choice. As for lab diamond anything I will pass which means more for the people who want them. Oh and if you do go with a GIA stone be sure to VERIFY the cert.

I also forgot to ask. So your are GIA certified, have you begun training on the lab grown GIA side yet? If so how do you tell the difference? I have been told a filter is used and also lab diamonds sold in the U.S. are required to be inscribed as such? I know that they have something to tell the differences because many jewellers signs even state if it is lab created there is no trade in value. Our master jewellers will take a look at the stone. And I know someone who actually teated this theory. He took in two rings . One was earth mined the other a lab grown. Both had the exact same setting and both were alike in color and grade etc. And the jeweller picked up on it within about 10 minutes. The first ring he set on the counter and asked how much did he pay for this ring? His response was I can not remember? One was a bit more expensive though. The jeweller went through all the I am sorry to say speech and told him it was. A lab created/grown he said it was a good one most likely with the proper pressure and heat. The second one he said this one is real and gave my friend a trade in value. He did this in 5 stores over a 2 week period. Only one jeweller didn't know the difference. Hey listen, I am only worried as I truly have invested thousands I mean thousands upon thousands on earth mined GIA cert stones. And if labs do finally take over which stops erosion and slave labor as well as slow down certain wars. I find that to be acceptable as long as diamonds that are earth mined do not lower in value but rather lab grown come up closer to the same price point instead of only 20% price point of an earth mined stone.

Hi...I have been offered a 1.58 ct round brilliant cut , M( light brown), SI3, set in rose gold 18ct ...would this be too much to pay at $5000. It is graded by EGL no fluorescence and is an excellent cut. Please advise

Hello and thank you for the comment. EGL certificates are known to be off one to two shades so this is a N-O color and si3 basically means I1. So I would say you are getting ripped off. Here is a GIA M color SI1 with an incredible cut for 3800 -www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.50-carat-m-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-7077629?a_aid=5a73fd85d5e0d

You do say in the video that "this applies to 1ct-1.5ct stone". So anything lower than that changes the way you should select your diamond? I don't actually like big diamonds, so I was looking to buy a setting with a diamond around 0.5-0.8ct

The Hive I consider diamonds a horrible investment. Anything at retail price is a horrible investment. Jewelry is for personal use there are lots of better ways to invest. Now if you can afford a stone that belongs to a millionaire collector then more power to you. But that’s not most people.

That Guy Osiris that’s so true but I just get my stones from a guy in Thai land so no middle man just straight prices plus I get card to show what my stones are and they are certified. Crap I almost got a pink Dimond from a mine from Australia but I did not have 15,000$ per a Caret. Sorry for the miss spelling been a long day.

Is a natural diamond better than a lab grown?
@OsirisDiamonds

Hi Javier, Thanks for commenting. This is subjective. Some prefer the natural diamond because that's what we know. The lab diamond is a cost-friendly alternative. It's physically and optically the same. I have a video on Lab diamonds on the channel, I suggest you watch it.

Thank you! great tips. Generally when buying a ring online. Would you sacrafice colour for better clarity?
@OsirisDiamonds
@OsirisDiamonds 3 жыл бұрын
Its situational. Si1 is the sweet spot. Lots of SI2's can give issues. SO you have to weigh the options. Certain cuts hide color well. Round diamonds with an I color is a good balanced affordable combo. You may find a H color with a lower clarity that works. If eye clean then its fair play. Typically, clarity isnt going to be seen with the human eye so to answer your question, color over clarity. Until clarity affects the beauty of the stone.
