Still have my Asus V3800 Deluxe TnT2 from 1999. Served me well, seeing Unreal going from software to Direct 3D well it was Unreal :) Q2, Q3, Unreal, UT99, SOF, NFS Porsche unleashed, System Shock 2 , Homeworld, Interstate 76, Sin, Half-Life... so many games were rendered with that VGA .

Amazing cards. Back in the late 90's, a friend of mine asked me to do some work for him breaking PCs, sorting out parts, pricing them for resale, etc. There was a lot of work, around 20 servers and well over 200 beige boxes. I had a computer shopper magazine to help me out. Some of the stuff I'd never seen before. Anyways, there were these amazing DELL Optiplex workstation machines. Around 15 in total. They were really wide, with a divider down the centre of the towers. REALLY well built and robust. Huge bespoke Dell motherboards with onboard SCSI controllers, dual Pentium III Slot CPU's (most had just 1 CPU and a terminator in the 2nd slot, but a few had dual P3 550's). They also had SCSI cards installed, cos each machine had 3 Quantum SCSI 8.6GB HD's installed. And each had a Diamond Viper V770. At the time I didn't know they were TNT2 cards, because they were strange looking and I figured they might be industry cards. I took one home and figured out it was a TNT2, and quite a nice one at that! It was faster than my VooDoo 2, and a much cleaner image. After all the work was done, instead of paying me cash, this guy offered me five machines as payment. I took a HUGE Dan server in an AMAZING blue case. It was well over 4 feet tall, weighed an absolute ton, had dual P2 450 Xeons inside. And I also took 4 of those Dell workstations, cos they were just so nice to work with. Kept one as my main rig for a long time, and Quake III flew with the dual 550 P3's and the Viper V770s. They were pretty big, but I took it to a LAN party anyway, and everyone was asking what GPU I had because Quake III was so smooth. Ended up selling the other machines over the next few months, made a fortune from the SCSI controllers and HD's alone, but I gave a couple of the V770s to my LAN party mates. Aliens vs Predator, Q3, Unreal Tournament etc. Great card.

Dan made the best cases back then. Before Thermaltake and Lian Li brought out their "home commercial style" tower cases that looked cool, Dan were making specifically for industry (95% servers of course), but their build quality was amazing. Heavy, tall, shit loads of room. Not COMPENSATING or anything! Hahaa :D @@66mhzbrain

I had the TnT2 Ultra, it blew my mind coming from an S3 Trio3D. I played most of my games at 800x600 at the time so the TnT2 Ultra was unstoppable for good long while, particularly given the rapid advancement of tech at the time. I only upgraded once the Geforce 4 came out and mostly only because I needed features the TnT2 lacked for some new titles. For a retro build from around that era you can't go wrong.

@@66mhzbrain that makes sense, I believe the banshee was much more powerful than the voodoo 1, close to a Voodoo 2 so the upgrade to a TNT2 would not have been worth it. For me, it meant being more competitive in online games like Quake 2 and Quake 3

@@thedopplereffect00yes, the Banshee is 2 to 2.5x faster than the Voodoo 1, depending on the game. In many games, the ones that do not use multi-texturing, the Banshee is even faster than a Voodoo 2.

The M64 was a disgrace! XD Such a crippled TNT2. I presume his V3000 won hands down! But if you'd had the Viper 770 or a TNT2 Pro/Ultra, different story.

The Voodoo was actually mine 😋 But we were pretty even in the end as he had the faster CPU (P3 500, mine was a P2 300). And he also got all the pretty 32 bit color depth. Yeah, funny times back then. @@TheVanillatech

@@TheVanillatechactually a Voodoo 3 3000 is in most games clearly faster than a TNT2 Pro and even slightly faster than a TNT2 Ultra. And no wonder, the core frequency of the V3 3000 is 166 mhz, 16% higher than that of a TNT2 Pro and 10% higher than that of a TNT2 Ultra. Also Glide helps a lot, giving the Voodoo's a clear advantage over the TNT2s and other non-3dfx cards.
@TheVanillatech
@TheVanillatech Жыл бұрын
@@3dfxvoodoocards6 You cannot really compare GLIDE performance to any other card, given it's a proprietory API solely for 3Dfx cards, dude. You have to compare like for like. D3D and OpenGL performance. Apples to apples. VooDoo 3 being totally incapable of 32bit colour also a huge disadvantage. Especially when ATI was making cards like the Rage Ultra which performed amazingly well in 32bit, as did Matrox cards and even the early Geforce cards, and games around that time were all taking advantage of the extra texture and colour bitrates. If you cherry pick Glide games, you can make an argument for the V3. But then I could cherry pick games that the TNT2 destroyed the VooDoo in, or even settings that the VooDoo 3 cannot run at ALL! ie. All 32bit colour modes. Etc. I own 2 TNT2 Ultras, probably 10+ TNT2 Pros, a pair of V2's and a handful of V3's. I've done the testing, when building many retro rigs, over the decades. And back in the day, if someone offered me a V3 3000 or a TNT2 Ultra, I lnow for sure which one I'd take!

the TNT2 was the 1st "real GPU" that my friends and i could afford. prior to this, we always had a combo of a voodoo and some other 2d card or if you were me, you were stuck with a rage iic and did software rendering most of the time. others were usually more expensive. i lucked into a Chaintech Riva 128 from a friend that upgraded to a GeForce 256, but eventually i managed to buy a $150 TNT2 Ultra after some lawn mower and xmas money at Best Buy, a large electronics retailer. it was a fantastic deal on an overclocked celeron 300A and seemed to scale better with the OC than the Riva or Voodoo ever did. might be something worth checking out there.

Yes scaling it something I've not looked at as my setup is fixed. A future project 😁. Back then I could never afford the best. I think the only time I had a current 'good' card was when I got a riva 128 in a new dell machine. Is what makes it so much fun getting thinga I couldnt afford then to play with now,!

Like! Beautiful card and interesting benchmarks. The TNT2 wins against the Voodoo 3 3000 in Unreal Tournament only because the game runs with detail / high textures and fog only in Glide with the Voodoo's. Those options are by default turned off in Direct3D and OpenGL, giving the impression that the 3dfx Voodoo's are very slow and the others very fast, when in fact the Voodoo's run UT with higher details. If detail textures and fog (volumetric light) are turned off from the console just like they are in Direct3D and OpenGL, the Voodoo 3 3000 will get 78 fps, a lot more than a TNT2. The Unreal engine is very well optimised for Glide and the Voodoo 3s do not dissapoint, being very fast in all Unreal engine games.
@66mhzbrain
@66mhzbrain Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I was wondering as I was doing this the same time you did your tnt2 pro comparisson. The voodoo always looks nicer and not using glide handicaps it in benches like this.
@BurningFlame1999

Nice but the direct competitor of the TNT2 Ultra was the V3 3500, not the 3000 version. 3dMark is not an ideal benchmark because the card producers optimised their drivers a lot for this software knowing that everyone will benchmarks the cards with it. Games are much better for testing than 3dmark.
