Honestly what made the Monsterverse actually, you know, *live* is the fact that they release it *every few years* . Literally like, it actually feels like an event when one releases because we all had time to get excited for the upcoming movie, watch it, be slightly disappointed at some aspects but still love the romantic comedy of the giant monsters, eventually let off the steam, and then we get the next big reveal. The fact that having *time in-between releases* is one of the novel concepts it has is just kinda funny to me.

The DCEU, started off as Zack Snyder’s thing then they lost faith in him and sabotaged Justice League. Then it was six years of random movies, trying to figure out what sticked to the wall while trying to internally soft reboot itself countless times. Then it became The Rocks thing for a year until Black Adam bombed and now The Rock has never been the same since. Then it finally died a slow embarrassing death with The Flash and now it’s James Gunn’s thing. Quite the journey it’s had for the last decade. Good luck James, he’s gonna need it.

To be fair they weren't exactly wrong to lose faith in him. Man of Steel wasn't a terrible start, but he only doubled down on what most audiences didn't like about the film, with Batman V Superman and it became clear that he hadn't learnt his lesson when directing Justice League. The problem was less that they ditched Snyder and more they just constantly course corrected after they ditched him, to the point that even well received movies like the first Aquaman and Shazam film's couldn't gather any momentum.

I remember hearing an expert say that the reason why the dark universe (and some other cinematic universes for that matter) failed was because they didn't get what Marvel did. They didn't announced that they were going to make a cinematic universe. They just made good individual movies with some connections for people to notice. And then they developed those connections eventually with the movies they made after the first ones until reaching the status of cinematic universe. Telling the audience that you're going to make a cinematic universe is like telling them that they're obligated to watch all of them to enjoy the content. Basically saying: "Here are the movies, now get invested" and that's not how it works. You don't want to make movies feel like homework. The expert also said that the only franchise that more or less understood what Marvel did is the conjuverse. Which I kinda agree all things considered.

I'm really jumpy, easily grossed out, and scared of most things. But the mummy trailer at least the one here, I just felt bored. Effects, boring, jumpscares, saw them coming, all in all I got more annoyed of wasted time than any thinking "oh, it's a not very scary horror movie, maybe I'll dare watching it", then I forgot about it until next time, repeat.

If the characters had their own movies that weren't directly connected but took place in the same world then it would be a universe. The Sonic series has a movie with 2 direct sequels and then a spin off tv show.

The problem is that many producers/executives design their cinematic universe to be specifically like the MCU (the Poohniverse might be the one that hides it the least). However, this model of "A handful of solo adventures and then they all get together to defeat the big boss" works for superhero movies because that's what the genre is about. If you make a superhero movie and it has sequels without being part of a cinematic universe, you will still use a lot of the tropes found in crossover movies, even in the first installment. Would you make a stand-alone movie featuring different serial killers who realize that they need form a team in order to achieve their goal? A movie where they find a common enemy that they need to stop? Of course not. Now I ask the same question except with monsters. Same answer? Naturally. That's why Universal's Dark Universe didn't work. In their first movies, Godzilla and King Kong were feared by people due to their abilities to cause destruction. Plus, they were essentially giant animals. So it made sense when they started to get into brawls in later movies. Dracula and company weren't designed as fighting beings. And the old crossover movies prove it. We did see Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees in a rumble and it looked... wrong. No matter how many thrilling sequences these kinds of movies have, they're not really part of the action genre. It's hard to get excited because it's also hard to imagine that final battle it all leads up to. No, really. Try to visualize it. These characters side by side raising their fists (or knives, I guess) in front of... Ummm... A strong cop/hunter who's trying to stop them? Or another killer that's slightly more evil than them? Yes, you can make a cinematic universe with horror movies... Just not with any formula.

I feel like technically the sonic movies are a cinematic universe. It's more that it doesn't matter. You don't have to call it that, because it goes without saying that they are in the same universe. There have been words that describe this for a long time: Sequel or spin-off: same universe. Reboot: different universe. Soft reboot: same universe, but new story. The reason the MCU (and monsterverse and DCEU) is noteworthy, is because they don't fall under those terms. It's not immediately obvious that movies like Iron Man and Thor exist in the same canon. So it's necessary to explicitly call it a shared universe. Another "rule" here is that they actually do cross over regularly, they're not just connected with easer eggs or a single crossover episode in a tv show. Side note: some MCU movies definitely fall under the term spin-off. But most are like a reverse spin-off (a spin-in?), because the individual movie came out before the shared movie. From this perspective, I wouldn't even call Star Wars a cinematic universe. It's all just sequels and spin-offs.

The best part about Venom's appearance in the MCU is the fact that No Way Home almost immediately made sure it couldn't work by having the spell only pull in people who know Spider-Man is Peter. Which as Venom's universe doesn't have a Spider-Man literally makes it impossible for him to turn up. (Also there is an explanation for Electro as he could have overheard Gwen shouting Peter's name as he was coming round in the end fight of TASM 2)
