The minimum quantities on Fidelity's T-bill page were really throwing me. It wasn't clear at all how I could purchase, say, $50,000 in T-bills, rather than a $1 million or so. Seeing that you can select an issue even when you don't meet the minimum was really helpful.

Wow, thank you for making such an amazing and informative video!! This was immensely helpful. Quick question: When you buy in a secondary market like Fidelity, do the T-Bills automatically come to maturity and then sell? Or do you have to manually go into Fidelity at the time of maturity and sell using the steps you showed at the end of the video?
@yunsongwu6589 Жыл бұрын
T-Bills will automatically come to maturity. You will get the cash in your fidelity account after the maturity automatically.

What if the complete depth of book does not contain the option to buy one bond, for example? Do you have to keep hunting and pecking around until you find a minimum quantity that works for you?
@firstlast7168 Жыл бұрын
i am new to this and does not have a good grasp of things like what is the difference between buying from treasury directly and from the secondary market; say, if i hold it to maturity, does the face value of the treasury bond change to reflect the pricing in the secondary market? or the face value is guaranteed by the government, so the yield does not change from the moment I purchased it from the secondary market if i hold it until maturity?

So awesome. Thanks for walking us through this. I had to sell a T-bill that renewed because I forgot to turn off Auto-Roll. Mostly because its not obvious on fidelity how to do that. (You turn off the alert for it). It was easy to sell and the negative effect on my earnings was minimal. I actually sold it the day it settled. A warning though, I bought a CD thinking I could sell it as easily and that is often not the case for CDs. One of my cd's would lose hundreds from what I see in the depth of book and the other can't even sell without a call to fidelity. So I am sticking to T-bills for that reason.
@aaronwilliamson40452 жыл бұрын
This is why i don't like auto-roll...

Before seeing this video, I thought that all T Bills on Fidelity had a minimum quantity of 100s or 1000s of purchases. This video should be in Fidelity's help section. This is the only way for the small investor to buy T Bills on Fidelity. Thanks for going through the details.

Happy to see your video on buying through Fidelity. I am also a big fan of Fidelity but the T-Bills buying is confusing. I put in a buy for 13 week bills through Fidelity over the weekend. I'm on Fidelities site and I clicked the 3 month rate like you did at 2:27 of this video and since it's just past 3:30am Fidelities site told me they don't do secondary market trades after hours. I didn't think what you showed was for the secondary market. I'm a bit confused. Maybe I will try again after the market opens. I did exactly like you did. I went to the drop down and clicked fixed income and I scrolled down to the same 3 month US Treasury like you at 4.65. I guess I am just unlucky with these websites.

I'm confused by treasuries all the time. If my cash is sitting in my investment account, which is swept into a money market account, collecting 4.12% (at the moment), why would i bother using that cash to buy treasuries that collect barely higher interest at 4.19%. Honest question.

I just bought 17 on Fidelity. In my positions page, it says 17,000 under "Quantity" and "16,7333.78" under "Current Value." Why isn't the current value $17,000? I thought I was buying $17,000 worth of T bills. Hope this makes sense.
