On this day in 1971, shooting began on the DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER pre-credits sequence in which Bond (Sean Connery) kills the fake Blofeld (Charles Gray) in a mudbath. The mud was actually made from mashed potatoes. Production Designer Ken Adam said, “After 24 hours those mashed potatoes began to smell, and the smell became unbearable. The whole stage smelled of it.”

I feel like the kills in the 70s and 80s movies were less violent but weirdly sadistic. Like, the good guy drowing people and boiling them alive in mud gives me weird vibes.

They could risk those things because CGI and tech was less realistic. Now imagine if Bond would boil someone alive.... even a Shark attack can't be properly made without people getting shook

He didn't even want to be there to be honest and only took the part for two reasons. One, his non Bond movies since vacating the part had been bombs at the time and the producers offered him 1.25 million (a record number then) which he used to setup the Scottish International Education Trust. He even looked out of shape too, especially compared to how he looked years later when he did Never Say Never Again.

and he didn't age good imho. As long as he's been (and still is) a beautiful Man with whiteish colors and beard (he looks fantastic in Entrapment) he looked "young" till Thunderball, you can already see something in YOLT and he definitely look "old" in DAF. Same for Roger, as long as he looked beautiful and great in his first four movies, he started to look old since FYEO, and he looked very old in AVTAK (given that he wasn't young in 1985, I mean that these changes did happen in a few years).
@gutz1981
@gutz1981 4 жыл бұрын
@@toivonencresto I have to agree that Sean looked better like 10-13 years later in Never Say Never Again than he did in this one. FYEO should have been Roger's last as he could just get away with it then. Sean did not look as young as he did come this film and yes, the signs were there come YOLT. Funny though, he was still 2 years younger than Roger when he took over the role. Yet Sean looked better than Roger when he got into his 50s. Age is funny that way.

You've got a good eye. I bet very few people...even people who've seen these movies dozens of times noticed that. Check this one out. In Moonraker, there is the scene where Bond is driving the Venetian boat on land in St. Marks Square and they show a guy drinking his wine who looks surprised. (This is at 2.34 minutes into the video Moonraker-Bond drives Gondola)This is the same guy who appears in For Your Eyes Only, in the scene where Bond is skiing and being chased. Bond flies over the table where people are eating...sometime after that, they show this guy acting surprised (At around 2:02 minutes into the scene..For Your Eyes Only-Bond Being Chased by assassins). Weird.

There was a series of _Saturday Night Live_ sketches built around _Celebrity Jeopardy!_ where, in this fictional context, Trebek had to deal with exaggeratedly foolish celebrities who couldn't get any of the questions right. These sketches eventually depicted Sean Connery as his dedicated arch-enemy, who'd go out of his way to mess with him.

I will never understand the distaste for this film. I love Connery, Charles Gray, the story, the soundtrack, and the action. I understand that coming from Majesty's makes it hard to compare but for me it's a nice transition. My head cannon is Bond spent his "Holiday" tracking down Blofield here which turns out to be a decoy. I believe every Blofield in the film is in fact a decoy. FYEO shows the real him still injured and that’s when Bond truly gets his revenge for Tracey I do wish Laznby came back (Though Connery still did great for me) and I wish there was some more gun action in the film but as it stands, I still love the film very much. No nostalgia attached for me either as I had already seen Casino Royale, Skyfall, Brosnan's first three, and all of Connery's films at the time. With all that competition and comparison I still love it. It’s just a (jump to the left) good time
