diana & jerry | love story

I understand that Jerry was not in Diana’s level intellectually (and economically) but he just needed more opportunities. He had potential and I could easily see a great story line for him. Maybe not the traditional one... but changes to stories can be an improvement. I can envision several story lines with Diana and Jerry. Diana can pursue her university career while Jerry seeks to improve both his economic status and education. While Diana continues to struggle in the life that her parents want her to live she can see herself give that up and create her own path. Along the way she would be courted by wealthier suitors maybe even Moody being a suitor (not as wealthy though). While this storyline with Diana is taking place, Jerry is improving his place in society to be worthy of Diana. He can begin by improving his education and buying and farming land to improve his economic status - with the goal of becoming worthy for Diana. Then the story can take a tragic romantic turn where Diana just can’t leave her social status behind, no matter how much Jerry improves himself (although she is in love with him). Jerry becomes bitter and continues to strive to become the wealthiest man in Avonlea. Obviously, there would be more to their story lines but this could be a draft... lol

Me too. I like both of them, but Anne and Gilbert getting together, so I think it's better this way. Not every love could end in marriage and dying together. I wanted Anne and Gilbert to separate.

They would've, if the show hadn't been axed, I think. Her dad was a lot more enlightened at the end than he was at the beginning, and I think whatever her mother thought about them, Diana wouldn't have listened to it. Plus Rachel, who has dirt on everybody, would always be in Diana and Jerry's corner. Rachel wants everybody to be as happy with their chosen ones as she is with hers.

I dont really think Diana was in love with him, according to the actress and the scene in the series, Diana was confused and thought she liked Jerry, but in reality, she just loved the freedom he made her feel. True though that status and interests played a huge part on their breakup. Jerry on the other hand, personally, he also never loved Diana. He idolized her and often times flirted with her (i mean who wouldnt?) because she was very pretty, and is the daughter of one of the richest and well known family in Avonlea. And the fact that Diana and him see each other more often because Anne always hangs out with her, makes me think that Diana was the only girl he knew aside from his siblings, Anne, etc. We also see that the breakup didnt seem to affect them too much, Diana forgot about it quickly and didnt even thought of apologizing, we also never saw Jerry sad or anything, but maybe it was just because of his lack of screentime in the later episodes, and how rushed it was. But how I wish, if s4 happened, Diana and Jerry could've been a thing. Especially because we never really knew what Jerry did with the embroidered handkerchief Diana gave him. Like the storyline couldve been her seeing him still holding on to the handkerchief, and her realizing that status and money should not play a part in their relationship. Because it sucks since we know that Aunt Jo always told her that her parents shouldnt dictate her, that love is for everyone, and that she has the freedom to do what she wants etc. I was kinda hoping she also asked Aunt Jo advice on her love, just like Anne, but she just asked about her education, which isnt bad but i just wish. If there wouldve been a s4, I thought that maybe, Diana broke up with Jerry but didnt give him back the book and the dog. She then leaves for Queens with Anne and the other girls, we see her unpacking her things then notices the book/dog that jerry gave her. Which will tell she has lingering feelings for him. Then maybe, ones they take a vacation back to Avonlea, she will see him, apologize, and see that Jerry has been working hard honing his skills in reading, writing, etc. Seeing as how the show really tackles freedom, equality, and many other problems in society, I dont see why they didnt push for a love story such as Diana and Jerry's. It wouldve been nice seeing the struggles that status may affect a relationship, and how differences may play a part, but how it will also help strengthen their relationship, how they will defy the rules set by society in their time period, and how Diana will further show her parents that she is a person of her own and not someone to be dictated by them. Its possible that s4 couldve done something similar seeing as how they really left the relationship of the two open-ended unlike the other happenings in the series. I really hate that it was cancelled, im sad that i found this series too late, and how i wish that i was with the fandom when it was still very active.

I think during those times, social class was very important (especially to a family like the Barry's) and Diana is the oldest daughter, the expectations of being a lady and conforming to what society asks of her is difficult to forget. I do wish she said sorry to him tho 😭

It was heartbreaking that they broke up, but at times relationships don't work out because of racial differences, cultural differences, religious differences and socio-class differences. Jerry was raised as a farmer in the lower class with no education. Diana was raised by a wealthy family with education. The reason why they kept their romance secret from everyone is that Diana's parents would not approve of it. The one thing they had in common was that their bilingual. Other countries had arranged marriages where the richest man or woman marries the poorest man or woman.
