I was a kid when this came out. I was into KISS, Aerosmith, AC/DC, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin. I turned on the tv and this special was on. This hard rock / metal fan sat there and watched the entire special. Diana Ross is a great entertainer.

Diana doesn't have the same power in her voice that Aretha Franklin or Nina Simone have. I love them for their depth and harshness, but Diana has a softness, sweetness and compassion in her voice that i find equally as powerful in its own way and which i love her for.

I saw her sing this song when it was #1 in August 1970 at the Ambassador Hotel in LA. She came out on stage wearing a Bob Macky red sequin gown with a huge afro. Brought the house down. Second time I went I sat up front with my girl friend and we both bounced on the edge of our seats through the entire show. I can still see her in my mind to this day.

I've heard/seen Diana Ross sing this song in person on 3 different occasions and each time it has been magical!! Her musicians always play the intro to the song first and the audience goes ABSOLUTELY wild!!!! And of course , she is ALWAYS superb!!! I even saw this show in person, the traveling version, that is. It was exactly the same show that she put on at Ceasar's Palace. There will never be another like her---not in my lifetime, anyway.

And in person it was just as it is on this screen, at the begining she stepped out of the screen and at the end, those guy carried her back into the screen. We were already crazy about hearing her sing this #1 song at the time and seeing her dressed was awesome. She was singing with a smile on her face that I remember to this day now 43 years ago. I had the opportunity to hear Diana sing this song when it had first come out, at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles in August of 1970. She was in the dressing room changing gowns and before she came back out the orchestra had started to play the first chords of this song letting us know what she was going to sing and sparked the excitement of the crowd. When she did come out she was wearing a fire engine red gown and a huge afro. She gave a flawless performance and received a standing ovation.
