Strictly speaking the car turning was breaking the law as it was turning over unbroken double lines. However, yeah, we must always pay attention and expect the unexpected (and illegal).

@@stujd1539 Sorry. Must be a different law in Tassie. In Vic the only reason you can cross a solid line is to avoid an obstacle or pass a pushbike, and only if safe. You cannot pass anything else, enter or turn across them. transport.vic.gov.au/road-rules-and-safety/road-markings.

Not paying attention would have been running into the back of the other car. They braked & went around the left of the turning car & it didn't appear they were very close to hitting the back of it. To the comment about turning across the unbroken double lines: it's not illegal to turn into a driveway over them.

The Tasmanian Road Rules pdf issued in 2021 by the Tasmanian Department of State Growth states: You must not cross double continuous lines to: turn from or into a road-related area like a driveway or carpark (page 13) - other reasons are also provided. However the Traffic (Road Rules) Regulations 1999 makes no specific mention of this, only the need to give way to oncoming traffic. It's interesting.
