Diane Morgan, director, writer and star of the hit BBC comedy series Mandy, visits BFI Southbank to talk about the new series.
The nation’s hero of the zero-hours economy returns in another series that follows Mandy’s micro-aggressive adventures as she battles her cost-of-living crisis with a number of short-lived, ill-thought-through and poorly paid jobs. Once again, Diane Morgan writes, directs and stars in the series, and is joined by faces old, new and somewhere in-between.

The thing about Mandy (the character) is there's no malice in her. She's not a saint but she's a relatively nice person just minding her own business. Far too many writers think their comedy characters need to be mean to be funny. Especially when it comes to "chavvy" characters (for want of a better word). Kudos to Diane for this funny character.

There are a number of comedy show here in the US that seem to be all about the insults and put downs. Drew Carey show was like that. I never watched an episode, but would see highlights, and it was just insult and demeaning other characters. Just garbage. I agree, Mandy while no saint, just minds her own business and doesn’t judge others, stays in her lane, it’s all about her, all the time. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I remember first seeing Ali.G doing a short slot on a program called the 11 o’clock show on channel 4. Ricky Gervais had a short slot on the same show. I’m not 💯 that’s where they started, but that’s definitely where I first encountered them & I’ve been a huge fan of both ever since ❤️

As in The comedy of Diane morgan, the facial gestures carry as much message as the words. You can deny or agree with words, but hard-pressed to call out the mouth lips chin like that.

The lips, mouth, and Chin can symbolize many things aside from a simple smile or frown. Consider disgust, amazement, deep thought, sternness, disapproval, and other limitless combinations. Moving the jaw from side to side, while the actual head stays in place. Exposing the upper teeth, or the lower teeth, or the side teeth either side. Again, as you isolate the anatomy of the mouth lips and Chin jaw, the breakout and manipulation of the anatomy can symbolize many different emotions and expressions. That's what I like about Diane Morgan comedian.
