In this video we take a hike out to Nuclear Lake and up onto the mountain on its northern end. With hopes of finding zipping and zooming protozoans, I climbed up to a mountain stream. But with little rain in the past month, I found the creek dry. To salvage the trip I took samples of water from Nuclear Lake and its outlet. I'm getting better and finding good "fishing" spots, and found diatoms, desmids, algal colonies, a euglenid, a possibly freshwater dinoflagellates!

Similar creatures I find in South West Scotland, often I find more in the semi permanent pools than in the permanent pools and river. Nice film thank you.

Thank you for the comment. We've got quite a few semi-permanent pools along the Appalachian trail in NY, so I'll have to check them out! Thanks again!!

The first one not a dinoflagelate but a staurastrum. Very nice sample with a lot of beautiful desmids !

You can always take small soil samples if your water source is dry. Just put a little in the bottom of the sample tube, add water and shake it gently for 30 seconds and see what was living in the soil.

Thanks! I’m going to use the heat of the day as an excuse for not taking soil samples on the day. 😀😂
