An advantage of making the reed blocks this way is the advantage of plywood in general - a single block of wood can have different internal stresses, grains, hydration rates, where this would be uniform, stable, and closed to propagation of cracks or moisture. It's certainly interesting to watch - thanks for the video.

I have a DVD of him showing how he makes his accordions - it's pretty cool. He makes the reed blocks with wide boards that he makes dado cuts in for the top and bottoms and glues in all the vertical pieces make what you would think is a 6 or 7 inch thick reed block, and then he just cuts a bunch of reed blocks from that on a table saw, making 6 or 7 reed blocks all at once.

Hi Bill. My name’s Eric O’Blanc. I think I know of the DVD’s that you’re talking about. Weren’t they made for the DIY Network or something? Anyways, I’ve really been trying to find some copies of these dvds. There’s not anymore at Marc’s shop and I’m not sure how to order them. You wouldn’t happen to have an extra copy of some, or know where I could maybe find more? Thank you very much for your help. Eric

Great Video - very interesting but has anyone made up a list of actual reed block dimensions? It would be nice to make a CNC project with aluminum or steel cut reed blocks and home made reeds.

Would you mind sharing the files you used to create these blocks?

I realy like your video to work on acrodions very helpful.

Interesting to see that there are multilayer plywood reed blocks (rather than making holes in a bulkier wood block). Is it a common feature on accordions ? Do you if it changes the sound quality (in the sense that the surface aspect might be different than with the usual boring tools) ?

It may affect the sound of the accordion a bit, since the plywood Won't resonate like a solid block, and the reed block resonance is important in amplifying the sound of the reeds, although like most instruments I doubt an untrained ear would ever notice.

Bill, about your comments above, could you post that part of DVD where he makes like your description? Thanks.

Well, fortunately this expensive machine has found its way into my factory, so I might as well use it. As to M.S.: No I haven't. Should I?

Have you seen the way Marc Savoy makes these? No need for that expensive machine.
