Own a 2012 Vmax, it is a masterpiece of engineering. Vmax is a very unique bike. long live Japanese engineering:))

I bought a brand new Vmax in 1985 the first year they were made and the best looking year I might add. Paid $5K for it. Then I bought a new 1993 Harley-Davidson Softail Custom and a friend talked me into selling the Vmax to him wish I would have kept it, he sold it later on. I still have the Softail and I bought a new 2016 Harley-Davidson Limited. I wished that Vmax would have had forward controls and a longer swing arm and a chain for the final drive. It was bad ass!

Exactly what I was thinking... Boy that vmax is pretty special. When I decide to go from sport bikes to cruisers this vmax will make the transition easy.

@@GTARockman ive always rode sport bikes too..But you have to admit cruisers are way more comfortable..Im not even 40 yet and after doing a long ride on a cruiser I'm thinking about buying one. Its so much more comfortable..

Honestly the output for a stock V-Max is over 200 horsepower! Not sure about the Ducati but the V-Max Has always been a beast on the streets! I want 1... Of each!

Well a good 1985 vmax had 145 hp did the quater mile in 10.80. This vmax has 190 hp, and stock seen them in the 9's. Weight has nothing to do with it. Power to weight ratio does. The Duc is simply under powered. In that race the Duc got off the line good. The vmax layed rubber out of the hole and still won. People can say what they want about the vmax, but from its inception its always been a straight line BEAST.

Rode off on my 2020 Tuesday from Orlando the N.W.Ar. over 1,300 miles now on it and did the 1st service at 400 miles. I love it when it comes to needing to pass. Fuel mileage sucks lol but with 200 hp it’s totally worth it. Take care I hope you and yours well.

2009 the vmax was the fastest accelerating bike on earth 0-60mph in 2.8secs. 50mph-75mph 1.09 secs.

Jeffrey Baker The internet may agree, however, there is definitely a production motorcycle faster than 2.8 in a 0 to 60. I'm also not sure about the 50 to 75. Boss Hoss may have something to say about that.

Nope, the official record for stock bikes is held by a 2006 GSX-R1000 at 2.35sec. The VMAX 1700 is third fastest at 2.5sec. 400m (1/4 mile) is 10.1sec for the VMAX.

The Diavel is a sport bike. The V-Max is a sport cruiser. I prefer my Triumph Rocket but that V-Max is one badass bike.

Diavel is classified as a power cruiser. It is used as a touring bike when you get the touring gear. It is a renegade touring cruiser according to Ducati.

Honestly, comparing that launch of the Vmax to the others in the warm ups, it was by far the worst. The Vmax spun quite a bit making it a closer race then it should have been. I do like the Ducati, they're both awesome bikes by any standard!

V MAX looks sooo much better!!! Real man s bike. Do not like Diavel style at all. Rode one, nice bike, but if i had the money, would love a V MAX !!

AMS Ducati Dallas raced a stock Diavel with the addition of a full Termignoni exhaust and ran a 9.980 at the Texas Motorplex during the month of June 2012.

It has been proven that the Ducati Diavel has better handling than the Yamaha VMAX. so with better handling a little less horsepower is nothing. The quarter mile time is very minimal. just a tiny bit less horsepower can be made up with better cornering skills. the Diablo has awesome handling for a 532 pound sport cruiser it also gets better gas mileage. All this for a whopping $2,985 less than the Vmax. It also has more comfortable eurgos and 3 electronic drive modes. meaning you can slow down and cruise Main Street to give everybody a better look. Also it sounds meaner. It has been rated the all around better machine. yes the Vmax is more powerful but its like driving a submarine through the turns. I'll take the Ducati. that's why I Drive Ducatis. I've had dozens of Japanese built bikes and I love them also. the other guys may have a little bit more horse power. which they have a ( little) bit more horsepower. Ducatis have the best handling on the market. Which is why they have the most World Superbike champion ships out of everybody combined. they make an amazing toy

Love the fact the vmax was spinning for half the drag, bit more of a controlled pull away it would of done the Diavel by more, that said the Diavel is a beautiful piece of kit!

If I’m into going straight, vmax. If I like my turns and hooligan runs, diavel all day. I’ll give up an entire second just to have the handling of the diavel. End of the day, two sick bikes.

The Vmax is a four cylinder, the Diavel is a twin. I don't think the Diavel did that bad considering. If it were a V4 Ducati motor.. The Vmax would be left behind in a drag race like the Yamaha Moto Gp bikes get routinely left behind on the straights to the Desmosedici in Moto gp! I love the Vmax had a Gen 1. I rode the Gen2 but ultimately went with the Diavel cause it handles considerably better. I don't just like straights, I like corners too.

@@hebeb394 They are both close to 20 grand and i'd bet the potential buyer of either bases the decision on a number of factors like weight, handling,hp , service costs and brand cache as much or more than they agonize over a $1,200 price difference on what certainly is a $20,000 bike after tax and reg.

Per di più, rilevamenti alla mano, hanno anche prestazioni simili, per non dire identiche. Quel giorno abbiamo fatto una 50na di lanci, una volta vinceva la Vmax, una volta la Diavel. Sono molto diverse, ma sui 400 m il risultato non è scontato. Sì, sono molto diverse, ma sono anche le uniche in questo segmento, assieme alla VRod (ma più lenta sui 400). Sul misto, ovviamente, la Diavel batte la Vmax alla grande, pesa 100 kg in meno e la ciclistica, gommomne compreso, è quasi da naked.

@vtajoe1 Your logic would only apply if the camera position was equally spaced between both bikes and high enough off the ground to have a clear view of the road. As it is, the camera is closer to the V-Max, making the Ducati looks as if it's further down the track than the Yamaha and the racing surface is not perfectly flat so parts of it are obscured from view.

look up 2016 Vmax Tail of the Dragon - 300+ sharp curves in 13 miles. The Gen 2 can handle the turns just fine. Gas mileage - not so good. I love my bike though.

Im thinking there was a timing gate for each bike so it really don't matter exactly when you take of at the light your time starts when you leave the light not when the light turns green. That leaves it all down to power, grip, and not to reaction times on the green light.

considering that both bike has significant engine displacement difference , i believe the Diavel had performed very well in this match....i'm guessing that the Diavel has more low end torque then Vmax due to V2 engine configuration, also the Diavel will reach it's peak power and torque in much lower rpm then the Vmax...162hp/9500rpm, 127Nm/8000rpm, couldn't find any data for the Vmax though

I think the Vmax´s design is more agressive without resigning the custom style, the diavel is a nice bike too but looks more like a sport naked...

Both bikes are brutally fast and so close it just comes downthe to personnel taste. I just purchased a 2012 Ninja 1000. The dealership offered me a 2012 ZX10R at same price but I don't need that much power. I've had bikes over the years that would do 150 mph plus but around 120 my brain rev limiter kicks in.

Hard to believe the bikes are that identical in quarter mile times but that's just one run with one set of riders, right? The Diavel is probably more of an all 'round performer than the quicker VMax maybe? Both bikes are kind of hard on the eyes IMO. Just kind of clumsy-looking compared to a streetfighter or sportbike style but I guess they are not so bad to ride.

I wondered why the new Vmax didn't post a better 1/4 mile time. I found out that the computer doesn't allow full power until the bike is moving past 30mph and then slowly turns up the power.. A quick re flash & Max will post 10 sec 1/4 mile times. With the forks compressed, the bike will easily go into the high 9's. My spotless '93 runs 9.80's with a 225 lb rider with a skinny 150mm bias ply rear tire and surprisingly few mods.

Thing is isn't the Ducati WAY more flickable in the twisties? Plus as mean as the VMAX looks, the Ducati looks better. However, with the proper seat the VMAX is the 2-up machine over the Ducati.

Now, lets take the HP:CC ratio and see what we come up with assuming each bike adjusted CC's to match the other and maintained the same respective efficiency (ratio) in HP production. Vmax: 0.1192 x 1198= 142.8 Diavel: 0.1354 x 1679= 227.3 So assuming ratios remained the same, the Vmax with an engine the size of the Diavel would produce 142.3HP to the Diavel's 162. Inverse, Diavel having Vmax sized engine would produce 227.3HP to the Vmax's 200. So which engine design is better?

Yeah, it doesn’t work that way. The VMAX is extremely detuned. It originally put down over 300hp at the tire during design and early testing. Even the final spec is further detuned, especially in the lower gears and at WOT in the upper gears. The Diavel is tuned much more to its maximum capability, other than adding flash/tune, airbox/filter, and decat with full exhaust for optimization. It’s not even a contest, ideal peak to ideal peak per design. The Yamaha engine design is better, and by far.

Doesn't really matter who won, if the posted times are legit .2 of a second isn't gigantic. It could simply be even a gearing issue. I'd say that most likely, they are evenly matched.

Vmax ist eine super klasse Maschine, jedoch ein kleines Windschild würde viel ausmachen, bei hoher Geschwindigkeit. Die Vmax hat Leistung ohne Ende .

strip the flash off the V-max and put a stage 3 supercharger in it and see if he can keep the tires on the ground. He couldn't get traction for over a half second when the tree lit green. That's a whole lot of bike and they're super comfortable for 90 mile rides. I've yet to ride a Ducati, but from the looks of them, they'd be a lot like the GSX-R, ZX-11 or FZ1 when it comes to rider positioning. What are they pushing, about 145-150hp out of the Diavel?

your right. "youd end up paying way more for a brand new ducati!!" The 1199 Panigale S, because the base Panigale for 18k doesn't come with the options you want, is 23k. and the Panigale R is $30,000. the Yamaha R1 is 14k. it does not come with those brands, but that is a $16,000 difference. I could buy 2 brand new R1s for that much. so yea I think id be able to muster up some name brands with all that saved cash. although I doubt the difference in performance would even be noticeable.

Both nice bikes, the Duck is 502 cc smaller so even though I love Yamaha I'd have to say the Duck is quite impressive. Looks better too. Yamaha needs to update the design and join the 21st century, the original VMax was very similar to the new model, quite outdated appearance wise. Its not all about speed all the time either. Ride safe.

+Dragan Marj I agree to some part, My question is why race the two this doesn't prove which is better, not that you were implying that at all. But both bikes apply to two totally different markets. The V-max is a total rebuild from the ground up, yet I agree with you that it isn't noticeable and lacking in the edge of styling. But the Duck has less power yet is more stylish. For me As an American or maybe it's just simple American ego either way It's nice to be the lion in the pride. I hope you don't misunderstand me I'm not trying to say which is better I'm just giving my opinion. Rubber side down.

greenmarine5 you are absolutely correct. I suppose the reason for the race comparison is to appeal to the power crowd so to speak. The comparison isnt really fair because the Duck is 502 cc smaller. I always say ride what you like and like what you ride. I also find many people like to hate on some brands and its usually the brands they cant afford and really dont know much about. Faster is not better its only faster. I was always a two stroke Yamaha owner and recently bought a HD and I love the comfort and its torquie, shamed many big sport bikes light to light or 1/8 mile lol with a 700 lb chrome machine. Ride safe bud.

Incredible machines. Im going to get myself a new bike come Nov/Dec (a combined birthday/x-mas present to myself) and I was looking at the VMax, but then the Diavel Carbon came out. Damn. In a straight line the Vmax is a monster, but in a straight line and the curves the Diavel is the better machine. Plus, after about 100 miles (70 if you ride it hard) the Max needs to be refueled. I personally think the Vmax is a great looking bike, but the Diavel looks great too.

racing a diavel on a track is silly too. if i ever bought either of these two bikes it would be for sport touring. i personally like the diavel for its looks. the vmax is ok but i don't like the proportions. it looks like they were trying too hard to give it the muscular look whereas the ducati looks naturally beefy. some people don't agree with me and that's fine.

Come on now, don't let one ignorant comment lead you into insulting all American bikes. I like both of these bikes preferring the looks/engineering of the Ducati. But if I'm riding on a long trip I'll take a comfortable cruising Harley! Don't let the internet trolls succeed my friend, Cheers!

Both awesome bikes I thought about buying one of these but I decided as I wanted to keep my licence I bought a Moto Guzzi Griso 1200 SE ...which is also awesome and fast enough for me.

If you look at the time difference between the two bikes and the speeds, its only by a very small margin. This is really not a good test to to tell which bike is better for there is soo many factors into play for one drag race. One of the riders could of got a split-second better start at letting the clutch out with the right amount of gas, the pavement on one side could of favored more to the bikes speed than the other, how the rider shifts.....

2016 and you can't buy a V-Max in the UK any longer. Guess it really couldn't go around corners.

I'll make one small point- seems that the number going around is 200; that's engine HP on the vmax. Diavel is 162 engine HP. So lets look at HP/CC: Vmax: 200/1679= 0.1192 HP per CC Diavel: 162/1198= 0.1354 HP per CC So to put this in terms everyone can understand, the Ducati V2 makes more horsepower per volume of displacement than the Yamaha/Star.

Resta il fatto che, a mio avviso, è un confronto che ha poco senso. Che abbiano un rapporto peso potenza simile (tra l'altro più favorevole alla Diavel) non dice nulla sulla curva di erogazione della potenza e della coppia, sul regime di rotazione massimo e su altri fattori, quali ad esempio i momenti d'inerzia interni al motore e pure la distribuzione delle masse della ciclistica. A parità di tutti gli altri fattori un quadricilindrico in generale in accelerazione è avvantaggiato.

That's because it's very torquey and does not have traction control neither. Also if the rear tire is not warmed up correctly, it will make that wheelspin for quite a while, but still is faster than the Diavel.

@AldoBallerini.....and in your video, none of that is mentioned. You show 2 minutes of goofing off, stalls, bad launches and no names or credit or any other info. To the casual observer, such as myself, my initial impression is how you are making it look. As a "journalist" I would think you would understand that.

I’m curious how the new Diavel stacks up against the Vmax. I had a B-King and it was faster than the Vmax, now I have a Diavel 1260 and I wanna know lol.

Diavel 600cc less than the Vmax and just 1 sec behind, that to me is room for improvement that can easily be changed.

Robert Fraley the max had a terrible launch compared to the diavel, and still won. Also sorry but if i beat you by .01 i still won. No such thing as a tie unless its point for point. Also look at the 0-60 and professional test rider runs.....these guys were faaaarr from professionals on this vid, in fact they suck i got 11.7 on my stock gen 1 1200cc vmax my first time ever on the strip.

su in moto divael 10,7 vmax 10,9. Vmax ha quasi 30cv in più (173vs146).Cmq sia sono due moto che mi fan veramente cagare!! a cosa serve la Vmax? per andare dritti?

You people must be reatrded. The Yamaha VMAX has the latest technological advances to date on a motorcycle it is a masterpiece I tell you this because my father owns a 2012 Max and the power and torque that bike has is amazing and even the brakes are monsters (6 piston caliper)

Drag racing is a science.. and that was about as scientific as a cricket bat... launch the V-Max in second @ 5k rpm, and if it hooks up, it'll run high 9's... Ducati for posing and looking cool.. V-Max for business..

Two of my dream bikes together in one video..... I actually thought the Diavel would take the max, though to be fair, it was close enough to depend on driver skill. Whats more impressive to me is that these things still ran 10's on what looks to me like regular asphalt on stock tires.
