Jack Dempsey said that before the sport became so popular, that the chief goal of boxing was to teach young men how to defend themselves.
@giorgosandrigiannakis13756 жыл бұрын
Yeah but then there were no gloves so the style was a lot different, later when gloves had been applied they made these defences that do not work outside so much.
@damienholland81036 жыл бұрын
Well yeah, the gloves are because it's so easy to break your hand on someone's skull. Dislocated knuckles, fractures, or what not. Not to mention wrist injuries.

@@giorgosandrigiannakis1375 lol ,dempsey was a gloved champ. Smh
@giorgosandrigiannakis13756 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i don't disagree with you but that doesn't mean that gloves didn't change the sport. Protecting your hand means a lot. That's why both in Boxing and MMA there was a rapid increase in injuries after gloves appeared in the sports. Now Dempsey was abviously good both in and without gloves.
@damienholland81036 жыл бұрын
I thought the induction of gloves reduces injuries in sports. That was the purpose of introducing them in MMA. Guess we'll agree to disagree.

Its actually called the shoulder roll floods version is the Philly shell the technique has been around since before the Queensberry rules used by the bare knuckle fighters ex. Jack Dempsey, charley burley, Henry Armstrong, joe gans, it was actually very common use by old school fighters
@engine2truck66 жыл бұрын
Yes, It is the Philly Shell. Been around a long time! And Mayweather doesn't use it all the time, in fact he's really good when he is in traditional orthodox stance as well. ...Sugar Ray Robinson, Gene Fulmer, and probably Carmen Basilio could probably beat Floyd, though.
@7dayspking6 жыл бұрын
Not surprising as it's how a lot of untrained people will fight with the left hanging low awkwardly out in front and pulling away from punches turning their head and their shoulder. It's a lot more natural than thinking to pin your elbows to your ribcage and holding both hands back at your face.

Your bad feeling on slipping inside is well founded and fully understandable. In boxing, there are certain ways out of danger; but in muay thai and or mma, the knees present much more danger for the fighter. It is only natural to express and educate the contrary alternative; the slip to the outside. Thank you for your insights.

best fundamental boxing instruction i have seen on the internet. this is old school stuff. last time i boxed i was 48 and out of shape and did more than hold my own with guys half my age (sparring) because this was how i was trained. guys today are not taught this or other basics anymore. i don't get it. you must understand how to not get hit and how to perform basic footwork before you should ever be allowed to throw a punch in a gym. punching was the last thing i learned. it should be the last thing anyone learns. imho.

If im not mistaken, this guy wrote a book way back in the 80's when i was a teenager. I bought the book and studied some of his techniques and learned about the shoulder roll and so many other techniques. This was way before there was a Floyd Mayweather. Roger was boxing doing this time but he never used the shoulder roll when he fought. I later started boxing myself in the amateur and this guys book gave me a foundation. I wish i still had this book or this guy's name so i can buy the book again. This guy is a boxing aficionado. Oh and judging by the quality of this film, i would say that he filmed this back during the early 80's probably around the time he published the book.
@plays4gamer8834 жыл бұрын
I don't think that the book I'm going to present to you is the book this guy wrote. But there is a fairly popular book called "how to be an ass-whipping boxer" - Jay "Champ" Thomas. Thomas also thought in and teached the, today known as, Philly Shell, but calls it a stonewall defense. This book is very expensive, that's why I use the free version from the Internet Archive. Though I wish the get this book in my real hands one day, perhaps when I'm old enough to make some money.

I don't understand why people say Mayweather is a chickenshit boxer or how these techniques are awful. Why is receiving punishment so cool? Best defense is not to be there when a fist or leg is coming at you. These techniques a can and have been applied to kickboxing, MMA, and JUJITSU and have been proven to work. Top 2 examples AMRI MADANI, ANDERSON SILVA, and you may laugh, Jean Claude Van Dam

David Diaz i agree that mayweather is an amazing fighter but if all boxer and mma fighters where to fight like him mma and boxing will be boring...his fight are boring period...if mayweather didin't trash talk a lot and handle him self the way he does i think people wont even bother watching his fights...
@lew7089 жыл бұрын
+Edgardo Heredia Unfortunately, Mayweather is not into boxing to entertain; He's in it to WIN! To create a legacy, of which he has done. He is certainly going to go down as one of the greatest to do it simply because he does not go after or look for a knockout as much as he looks to outscore his opponent.... It IS a scoring sport and as in most sports, the best defense, most times, will come away with the win.
@coribio9 жыл бұрын
you said"Mayweather is not into boxing to entertain" you should look at his interviews he sure like to use the words "exiting" and "entertaining' when he talks about his fight...i never discredit mayweather about his skills and legacy.. but lets not get it twisted his style of boxing is boring and is neither entertaining or exiting..period...
@Mr786Addzy9 жыл бұрын
+David Diaz The truth is Floyd is a phenomenal boxer. People are too blind to realize his skill & art because they hate him so much. He's a true master because he truly defines boxing - "hit & not get hit" but even "boxing fans criticize him for "running". I mean if they knew anything they'd understand it's not "running" it's movement, evasion and distance;everything Floyd does in that ring is for a reason. His bad guy persona is what makes everybody despite him but I personally love it!
@coribio9 жыл бұрын
the truth is no most people admit he is a skill boxer...but his fights are boring if the world of boxing decided to fight like him or his style was the standard way of boxing...I dun care if you love him hate him or admire him boxing will die...people will rather watch ggg vs ggg than mayweather vs mayweather...in boxing you should fight with the intent to hurt a man not with the intent to dodge and move and tap for 12 round...to mayweather is not about boxing is ab out business...

ahhh that crouching, someone did that to me one time, it was annoying af. I kept getting countered so I was very weary when throwing the punches, then I saw my trainer in the corner doing an uppercut motion saying (THROW AN UPPERCUT) and so I got a little closer put my jab hand in front of his face to cover his eye sight, I got in close and throw an uppercut, his reaction was priceless, I hit him on the nose and he started sneezing and shiz (im a southpaw he was orthodox) I dont recommend shoulder roll to people of opposite stances.

Boxing is a Western martial art to a science. Less weapons makes it easier to master and a great addition to any other MA. The thing they got is how to punch most and MA(with glass jaws)don't punch properly and get knocked out by Palookas for years. Grappling is good but one one against multiple people(common knowledge). Boxers have good setups and Mayweather mastered that with this method. Don't knock off achievements take what Mayweather or any greats out there have and make it your own. Not everyone is invincible. Learning and keeping an open mind is key. Teach a boxer to counter a wrestler and BJJ and you will see something interesting going on or vice versa.
